Theories like the the Reflective Judgement Model have pros and cons for applying it to the real world. One pro aspect is that its helps student affairs professional make programs that deal with and reflect on ill-structured problems and receive positive feedback. One critique or can of the Reflective Judgement Model according to Evans (1996) wrote that the study under which the model was developed was not longitudinal, which brings to question as to whether the stages in the model are actually sequential and hierarchical. This claim by Evans (1996) is null and void because King and Kitchener clearly state, “RJM reports both the results of our 10-year longitudinal study… other longitudinal studies of 120 other respondents…” Unless Evans (1996) …show more content…
Chad explained that these stereotypes are built on both sides, civilian and military. Chad pointed out that veterans come into to his office expecting to be treated differently by people negatively and positively. In the terms of being treated positively, some veterans are very entitled and that because of their service should be given everything. He tries to counsel these veterans with sense of entitlement by say that you are working for the next phase of your life and that this is not the military anymore. It the military everything is provided for you and if there is any issues, senior leadership tends to solve it. In terms of civilians building stereotypes and treating veterans negatively, some find that veterans are strong and confident, therefore making them feel inferior because of their own insecurities. In addition, some civilians believe that veterans are broken, psychotic, and disturb the peace on a regular basis. These are perfect examples of when extreme cases are use to define the general ones. When a veteran disturbs the peace, it means that if a student veteran is passionate about a subject and starts raising their voice, does not mean that they are going to be violent. It means that they care about subject and nothing else. Working with student veteran populations seems very rewarding because you are working with a population that has sacrificed a portion of their lives …show more content…
The Diversity Council is comprised of representatives from each of the diversity clubs within the Undergraduate Association and work together to educate the College community through programming, serve as a resource for clubs, and promote an environment that embraces other cultures. Here student veterans would be have an exchange of exposure between different diverse populations. Current Diversity Council members would be able to learn and understand veterans to breakdown stereotypes they may have about them. The same can be said about student veterans and their exposure to Diversity Council members. In the future, during the year when Black Student Union and Women and Gender Studies Student Association put on their Cake Walk program, which deals with how people perceive privilege in society and reflect with discussion towards the end, student veterans can know about the program and participate. This would be great for Black Student Union and Women and Gender Studies Student Association members because in the content of program only looked at gender, ethnicity, and sexual orientation, but did not consider veterans and what experiences they
Today’s veterans often come home to find that although they are willing to die for their country, they’re not sure how to live for it. It’s hard to know how to live for a country that regularity tears itself apart along every possible ethnic and demographic boundary… In combat, soldiers all but ignore differences of race, religion, and politics within their platoon. It’s no wonder they get so depressed when they come home. (Junger
Overall, the issue is society does not how how to interact with veterans, especially on college campuses. He notes that when he went to college, some people felt compelled to thank him or ensure he was welcomed on campus, which just made him feel uneasy. Just like any “typical” student, Palm was on campus simply just trying to find himself and earn a degree. Another issue Palm discusses is the fear of veterans that has been instilled on campus.
During the Vietnam Conflict, many Americans held a poor view of the military and its political and military leadership. Protestors met returning soldiers at airports, train and bus stations, and in hometowns with open hostility. Following the conflict, and perhaps the maturing of the ‘60s generation, the view towards the military began to change somewhat. The hostility declined, but an appreciation for the military never really re-emerged during the ...
The reality that shapes individuals as they fight in war can lead to the resentment they have with the world and the tragedies that they had experienced in the past. Veterans are often times overwhelmed with their fears and sensations of their past that commonly disables them to transgress and live beyond the emotions and apprehensions they witness in posttraumatic experiences. This is also seen in everyday lives of people as they too experience traumatic events such as September 11th and the fall of the World Trade Center or simply by regrets of decisions that is made. Ones fears, emotions and disturbances that are embraced through the past are the only result of the unconscious reality of ones future.
Veterans had a hard time finding employment after the war. Employers considered a veteran’s service in the Vietnam War as evidence of drug addiction, and refused to hire them. The rejections only made the soldier’s struggles adjusting back to normal life even harder and encouraged their drinking and drug use. These harmful habits were their way of coping with the hate and rejection from society while still helping them forget their experiences in Vietnam. Veterans from the Vietnam War were the victims of an unprepared government.
...hat has worked and what hasn’t. If a student for example is taking blood for the first time and something goes wrong, they don’t find the right vein. Reflective practise would help that student to understand what he/she done wrong while carrying out the procedure and how they could stop that from happening again. Not is only reflective practice good for pointing out the bad factors of something but can also be there for when a procedure goes exceptionally well. If a health professional finds a certain technique works better than what’s in place already, reflective practise is a good way to shear the information you found with other colleges so they can carry out that particular producer. Gibbs 1988 is an example of reflective practice, he uses six stages when doing reflective practice which include Description, feelings, evaluation, analyse, analyse and actions plan.
Veterans have struggles with their civilian life after separating from the U.S Armed Forces. Returning to the civilian life seem to be a big challenge for veterans who have no prior job’s skills for civilian life because they had been influenced from military’s training, have physical and psychological damage.
I have chosen to use Rolfe et al’s (2001) framework for reflective practice, as I felt this was the best model for me to reflect on my academic development. I feel this model is the appropriate model as it has allowed me to reflect on what my situation was, what action I needed to take and the results of that action.
This year, the United States is set to end over a decade of continuous combat operations in Afghanistan as well as reduce the size of the military in an effort to restrain the growing deficit of the federal government. While some welcome these actions, they will have a significant effect on the men and women of the armed forces. Since the military is now focused on returning to a peacetime posture and cutting personnel, more veterans will be entering the civilian market. These men and women, who come from all walks of American life, will have had vastly different experiences than their civilian counterparts. These veterans will have spent their formative years in a wartime military and while they have so much to offer society, often, their service and they as individuals are stereotyped with unflattering characteristics by civilian managers, which has a negative impact during their post-military search for employment. Some civilians see them as uneducated and suffering from a host of mental problems related to their service. This problem is not only relevant for recent veterans but for all of those who have volunteered to serve in the military. Veteran unemployment is a serious problem for the United States. Those who choose to serve in the military should not be negatively impacted in the civilian marketplace as a result of their sacrifice.
Reflection is the process of evaluating ideas/thoughts from experiences and making active decisions. It is a necessary tool in experiential learning.[4] Several models have been developed to facilitate this process but this essay is going to be retrospective and based on John’s model of structured reflection(1992) [3,4]. The general reflective questions will be WHAT? SO WHAT? And THEN WHAT? [4]
In the last few decades the concept of reflective practice has burgeoned throughout numerous fields of education and professional practice. Regardless of its prevalence there continues to be a considerable variance in the understanding of reflective practice (Fook et al, 2006). Even within the same theories, contradictory perceptions of how reflective practice should be executed are observed (Hébert, 2015).
The ability to reflect critically on one’s experience, integrate knowledge gained from experience with knowledge possessed, and take action on insights is considered by some adult educators to be a distinguishing feature of the adult learner (Brookfield 1998; Ecclestone 1996; Mezirow 1991). Critical reflection is the process by which adults identify the assumptions governing their actions, locate the historical and cultural origins of the assumptions, question the meaning of the assumptions, and develop alternative ways of acting (Cranton 1996). Brookfield (1995) adds that part of the critical reflective process is to challenge the prevailing social, political, cultural, or professional ways of acting. Through the process of critical reflection, adults come to interpret and create new knowledge and actions from their ordinary and sometimes extraordinary experiences. Critical reflection blends learning through experience with theoretical and technical learning to form new knowledge constructions and new behaviors or insights.
In her article, Becoming a Self Mentor, Bloom states, “The capacity to reflect and engage in candid introspection is at the core of achieving self-awareness. Reflective practitioners think creatively, imaginatively, and at times self-critically about what they are doing. Individuals who use a variety of reflective practices have a better understanding of themselves” (pg. 55). If we value continuous programmatic improvements then practitioners must know themselves to effectively change and improve themselves. Teachers and directors cannot adjust or improve their attitudes or behaviors if they are unable to honestly acknowledge and own their actions. Reflection can help to close the gap between “espoused theories and theories in action” (Bloom, 2007). The best written handbooks and program manuals are meaningless if teachers and directors do not implement the philosophy and vision of the program as written.
In this reflective portfolio, i will be reflect about what I have learned from the past lectures as well as tutorials. It will be discussed by attaining four logs and I will start every log with explaining what i have learned before the lecture and what I have learned during the lecture, also discusses about the tutorial questions given by the lecturer.
