There is a controversial issue on whether public schools should be required to wear school uniforms. I believe that public schools should wear uniforms because it helps students focus on their studies rather than other students.
Wearing school uniforms reduces social snobbery and peer pressure, and instills a sense of discipline, modesty and community. School uniforms might diminish the use of inappropriate clothing, gang activity etc., but it will not be eradicated. On http://articles.latimes.com/1991-05-23/news/we-3297_1_public-school-students, it states “In schools attended by gang members, what students wear can be a matter of life and death. These students show their gang affiliation by the colors or emblems they wear; this makes them highly visible targets for violent attacks by members of rival gangs.” When everyone is dressed identically, having concerns about what you look like vs. others is not so significant. School is supposed to be an institution of learning where students are being shaped and generated to be the leaders of our future, but now it has become a showroom for a fashion show, a “ who wore it best” contest. With uniforms, there will be no comparisons as to who is dressed in the latest trend and who isn’t. In an article written by a police officer of the D.A.R.E program, http://articles.latimes.com/1993-11-21/news/hd-59758_1_baggy-clothes-school-clothes-uniforms, it states “I have observed varied behavior among students, and I believe much of their attitude and demeanor is manifested by the clothing they wear to school.” This causes a lot of financial pressure and inconvenience for students and their families. One of the benefits is that it helps eliminate the risk of bullying because it is so hard to ma...

2) It limits individuality and freedom of expression.
3) They may require special care.
Hence the fact that although there are some cons pertaining to this issue, after doing a significant amount of research I have come to the conclusion that the positives outweigh the negatives. I think that wearing school uniforms will bring a great sense of satisfaction to the all parties. It is up to us to do what is right for our children. If we have found one solution to eliminate the problems that most students are facing today, such as bullying, costs etc., why not take advantage of it. We all want what is best for our children. School uniforms might not be the solution to mend students’ academic reading, writing, and math proficiency, but it aids in addressing part of the problem with regulations and attendance.
Public school K-12 must implement school uniforms across the nation to bring the benefits of a decent education system. There will be less bulling, which will enable students to feel safe. There will be no gang related issues. Parents will not have to pay lots of money for their kids’ clothes. Also parents will not have to worry about what the kids are wearing to school. There will be less stolen valuables from the students. Students will be disciplined causing them to focus more on school, preparing them for a bright future. Females will not be sexually harassed and not bring unwanted attention. There will be less peer pressure to wear clothes that is in style or brand name. School uniforms must be implemented by public schools, K-12, because of the benefits it that come along.
School Uniforms: A Positive or Negative Effect? Today, school uniforms and dress codes are controversial. School uniforms for high school students have numerous positive effects, but at the same time, they have a variety of negative effects too. School uniforms positive effects are shown through attendance records, academics, and behavior; but its negative effects violates ones individuality and increases the amount of money spent on clothes.
Mentioned in Pros and Cons of School Uniforms, “When children wear their own clothes into school, this then becomes a time for them to judge each other, so it prevents competition and teasing” (Pros and Cons of School Uniforms). When you have school uniforms you won’t be wearing different things so you will become more equal. If the students are equal, it then reduces judgement and bullying between the students and makes the school a better place. Another positive statement on how school uniforms are beneficial comes from, Pros and Cons of School Uniforms, “Many educators believe that students who wear school uniforms perform better academically in school, and a study done in 1988 by Notre Dame shows a slight statistical evaluation in student performances among students who wear uniforms” (LoveToKnow). School uniforms will remove the clothing distraction and increase the amount of time given to the academics. Some students take time in the morning to get ready for school, uniforms will allow that time for sleep and studies. According to Procon.org, “Parents can reduce their financial burden when their children are limited to wearing one outfit everyday” (ProConorg Headlines). You won’t feel the pressure to buy clothes that are in style, or expensive and trendy. Uniforms are easier to maintain. They tend to last longer and can be washed easier than other clothes. Wearing school uniforms create a community of higher educated students and equality to
Since the 1990 's schools have reported amazing results by mandating a school uniform policy. Konheim-Kalkstein, Y. L (2006) write: “ School uniforms, proponents have said, can lead to improved discipline and classroom behavior, increased school attendance, respect for teachers, better school performance, higher student self-esteem and confidence, lower
School uniforms should be part of the school systems, because statistics had shown that students who wear uniforms are doing better than dress codes. More students also feel a sense of equality among each other and there are fewer judgments of others. It allows teacher quickly to identify people who do not belong in the building and limit the ways that gangs can identify themselves. School outfit provides students identity, individual spirit, and pride. Uniforms are increasing throughout different schools. School uniforms make students look more formal, and progressively affects student’s self-esteem, discipline, and safety, and develops students be more confident of what they can achieve in life.
Do you remember what your wardrobe was like during high school? Maybe you wore the latest in brand name clothing, anything that wasn’t associated with gang signs, or whatever hand me downs you could get. The reality is physical violence is common between children because of the name brand on a jacket or a pair of jeans. Children are being ridiculed because their families simply can't afford to provide them with the latest in fashion. In our larger cities where gang involvement is prevalent, children are killed because they choose to wear the wrong color to school. This concern is not about civil liberties or freedom of expression, it's about improving the educational environment within our public school systems nationwide. If this is a possible solution to the issues faced in public schools, is expressing one’s self with brand name clothing not worth giving up? and I went to private school where I was required to wear uniforms. I saw a strong correlation between wearing uniforms and prevention of school violence. I’m here today to talk about why uniforms prevent school violence. I will speak about how it prevents students from ridicule, theft and gang violence.
In conclusion, I feel that school uniforms are something all schools should really consider implementing in their policy. All of these points made show that they could be budget-friendly, help children focus and lower the barriers children can build up because of merely what they are wearing.
(“Quotes about Uniform Policy” 1). Theodore R. Mitchell, UCLA School of Education says, "I think its great news for all of us who have advocated school uniforms as a way of building community.” A pressing issue, bullying has become a big problem in many school, and to eliminate this problem, school policies should require students to wear uniforms. Many people believe that school uniforms build the community into a safer, more positive environment. School uniforms improve school academics, prevent gang violence, and assist families, who can not afford expensive clothing.
School uniforms in public schools are becoming increasingly popular across the nation. The public school system would benefit greatly if this policy were to be adopted. Opposition is always a factor when trying to make changes. Taking all things into consideration, the positive effects would be far greater than the negative effects. School uniforms should be required in public schools because their use would lead to higher education, less violence, and lower cost to parents.
School uniforms are a boiling conversation point these days. There are so many well-built points of view about what route parents, students, and superintendents wish to go in. It has been disputed that school uniforms have the potential to make a school safer, that uniforms reduce harassment or self-esteem issues, and that uniforms return the focus to the students' learning. I disagree. I, in fact think that school uniforms do not help make our schools a more secure place, I think that they do not revisit the center of attention to student's education - they just shifted where the attention was previous, and that they won’t help cut down on harassment or self- esteem issues in school.
Before school uniforms were even thought of children use to wear their regular clothing to school. It did not matter what they wore as long as they got their education. There were even some cases where children wore the same clothing to school each day, because their parents could not afford to buy new ones. However, when school uniforms became known and began to become popular, schools began to turn to them. Schools saw wearing school uniforms as a way that made students dress nice and have a good feeling about them. In today’s world that is only one reason why more schools are leaning towards implementing school uniforms into their policy. Schools uniforms is not a bad idea, but instead a good idea. School uniforms should be required for all schools, because they will help decrease violence in schools, they are affordable, and they teach children how to dress properly.
Did you know that as many as twenty-five percent of the nation?s pubic elementary, middle, and junior high schools have successfully implemented a school uniform policy? (Isaacson, 1998) School uniforms greatly benefit both the students and faculty by creating an atmosphere in which the students are able to get the most out of their education. I believe that all students should wear school uniforms regardless of whether or not the school is public. Below are clear-cut arguments in favor of school uniforms.
Read on Additionally, it’s unfair to assume that students can’t make friends with people who are dressed differently than they are. Students are already capable of crossing boundaries without required identical clothing, and schools can encourage this with leadership activities and group discussions. So in conclusion I do not think students should have to wear school uniforms, but I digress we all disagree on something right?
Finally, Joyce will summarise our arguments, convincing you, without a doubt, that school uniforms MUST be enforced in all schools. Point 1 (Brian): Having school uniforms will greatly lift the feeling of teamwork and sense of school spirit and belonging, and is a benefit for students. According to SafeSchools.edublogs.org, school uniform programs make it easier for students to develop a sense of belonging at school because greater attention is given to who they are instead of what they wear. School uniforms will make students feel that they are part of school and not whatever new trend they are wearing, which is beneficial to them. Another example is from an article on www.rjmccarthy.com, which tells us that logos on school uniforms enhance spirit and pride, and creates a more “community” feel among students.
I strongly agree that school uniforms are necessary because it creates and identity, avoid the potential of bullies and insults, saving time and money and helps students to be prepared for adulthood and in working
