Ever since the internet became widespread, it has improved and expanded the scope of human communication and this lead to the ability to selectively connect to people near and far for specific purposes. Online Dating, and it’s outlets, have become an arguably effective tool in finding viable partners for romantic relationships. The activity is so widespread that, in 2015 according to Rosette Pambakian, each day, there were at least 1.5 billion ratings on Tinder alone, which resulted in more than 22 million matches worldwide in the span of 24 hours (Loresco, 2015). In “A Million First Dates” (The Atlantic, Jan/Feb 2013), Dan Slater argues commiting to a stable relationship is negatively influenced by online dating because of a decline in commitment in couples. Essentially, the more options a person is given to find the perfect person in a short amount of time, the less they are inclined to stay in a relationship. For example, Slater’s case study subject, Jacob, a man with a difficult time meeting women and genuinely falling in love. After easily finding a dream woman on a dating website he found it easier to find someone else once their relationship ended. Hence, online dating made it easier for him (and possibly other users) to change views on a long or lifetime monogamous relationship.
Online Dating is defined as “the practice of searching for a romantic or sexual partner on the internet, typically via a dedicated website” (Oxford). In 2012, there were an estimated 1500 different dating websites in the United States and thousands more around the world. The most common dating websites are Match.com, Adultfriendfinder.com, christianmingle.com, Zoosk.com, and eHarmony.com. There are others depending on the user’s interests such as Cams.com is for those who like to communicate by camera, Gay.com is for those interested in other gay singles, Blacksingle.com is for those interested in other black singles and Seniorpeoplemeet.com is for the older person who is looking for that particular other in their age range. All dating sites can differ a lot or somewhat but they all have the same concept. The concept of joining matching singles. Online Dating eposes the differences between modern dating and traditional dating, and shows how dating has evolved throughout the times. Despite Online Dating has grown in popularity it's not clear that its safer than traditional dating. People use this website to communicate with each other using, email, chat and other service such as video. Usually after chatting for a specific amount of time the users tend to meet. Online Dating is a modern day phenomenon and helps by expanding the user’s network of finding a potential partner, which can help people lead to successful marriages, but also has negative outcomes that people need o be aware of.
In conclusion, while social media may appear to have made finding a date more efficient and more accessible to a wider part of our population, sacrifices have been made by its use. Social media has changed the culture of dating by jeopardizing the quality of the interactions that occur. Therefore a more superficial form of connecting, communicating and dating has evolved. Only time will tell what type of influence internet connections will have on long term relationships, including whether they will last any less than relationships generated by traditional connection methods. This new form of finding a date is becoming a more widely accepted part of our dating culture and, as with any new form of technology; the benefits of convenience must be balanced with the human element in order to preserve the human spirit and the integrity of the romantic encounter.

Online dating offers chances to people who feel more comfortable behind a screen rather than getting so nervous in front of a person that they are unable to speak. It allows them to interact with someone whom they would be uneasy to speak with in real life. Moreover, in traditional dating first impressions truly matter while online, people have chosen the best for their dating profiles. “People were ready to admit that going on actual "dates" was full of pressure and not very enjoyable. Traditional dating, they pointed out, encouraged an overly formal, inauthentic vibe that ultimately hindered instead of helped their efforts to make romantic connections” (Massa). Many do feel shy to ask the person they are interested in on an official date as they are not actually sure what the other person feels and needs more than the opinion of friends to take a step while asking someone online relieves that stress as the possibility of seeing that person in real life is low along with it messing with the asker’s personal life if it is a
For my week three discussion board, I will be answering the suggested questions listed on the course covering online dating websites. With online dating websites, I do believe there is a stigma. Some people using the sites may be viewed as lonely or just wanting a casual fling. Also, I think a lot of the stigma revolves around talking to a potential partner online first rather than meeting them in real life to ensure they are who they say that they are. Now, it is difficult to "match" with quality partners with dating sites because a lot of people do lie and make themselves appear better. So, to find a quality partner, it is necessary to pursue conversations about each others goals, likings, and understandings to see if the two have compatible
Most people set up their mind that using an online dating website is a signal of depression of not having partners. As the matter of fact, others think that using a dating website could be the instant way to help a person find their true love. It is all driven only by perception. Nevertheless, with the ease of digital communication we could use it for the advantages of our love life (Linking to the
Match, EHarmony, plenty of fish, tinder and other websites allow people to interact with each other in a way that is not so formal and not so intense as a face to face encounter which with the boom in social media and internet use is difficult for the average person because they are more than likely lacking communication and public speaking skills. These are helpful for someone shy and some may say shallow, simply because it bears an extreme risk for failure. A show called “catfish” became popular displaying just how destructive trying to meet and establish a relationship over the internet can be. People often put up a façade due to the increasing rate of loneliness and depression that American culture in this internet age causes. People make fake accounts to swindle others out their money and in most cases who people believe is on the other end of the computer is often a completely different person with a completely different
