Pros And Cons Of Exotic Pets

Should exotic animals be considered pets? This question has been in debate for at least 10 years. Some say that they should, due to America being a “free country.” Some disagree, saying that exotic animals in the American home is potentially dangerous. From my perspective, wild animals shouldn’t be considered pets.

One reason that these wild creatures shouldn’t be pets is because of the unexpected dangers they could release. People claim that their wild animals are “tame” and “safe”, but you can never predict what these creatures will do. According to an editorial by USA TODAY, “In 2009, a 2-year-old Florida girl was strangled by a 12-foot-long Burmese python, a family pet that had gotten out of its aquarium.” The family might have bought the snake, believing that it was harmless, but you never know what an animal, especially a wild one.

Another reason exotic animals shouldn’t be considered pets is because without their proper habitat and care to survive with, these animals might not get the best care that they need. When people buy these creatures, their main reason for buying might just be because the animal is “cute.” But the new owners might be

unable to care for these poor creatures. Due to lack of proper care, these animals can get sick and die. Just like the USA TODAY Editorial said, “[...] it was the animals themselves, including 18 rare Bengal tigers, who became innocent victims.” This means that the animals were treated badly, thus becoming the victims.

Some people say that we should consider exotic animals as pets.

They say that “[...] responsible private ownership of exotic animals should be legal if animal; welfare is taken care of.” People for this say that death rates from animals are low versus traffic accident death rates, and that if we have the freedom to choose our car, spouse, or even our house, why shouldn’t we be able to choose our own pet? I respond to this statement with this simple quote: “For the greater good.” Sure, having the freedom to choose and care for an exotic animal is something that we all should have, but you have to consider how buying this animal will affect you family, your neighborhood, your city, you state, your country, your continent, or even your world. So we shouldn’t own wild animals, for the greater

good.

In conclusion, wild animals shouldn’t be considered pets. Due to unforeseen attacks and horrible treatment of the animals, the whole pet thing isn’t going to work out. So next time you’re shopping for a pet, skip a wild one are go for something more domestic, like a cat, dog, or lizard. These common pets can still bring the unexpected into your life.
