Pros And Cons Of Designer Babies

As scientists get closer to making designer babies possible, more discussions are arising. So what exactly is a designer baby? A designer baby is, “A baby whose genetic makeup has been artificially selected by genetic engineering combined with IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) to ensure the presence or absence of particular genes or characteristics” (Thadani). Designer babies can be modified in many different ways; including, eye color, personality, body type, hair color, intelligence and scientists can reduce their chances of getting hereditary diseases. There are pros such as: reduction of diseases, increased life span and a better chance that the child will succeed in life, but the cons outnumber the pros. With designer babies humankind will …show more content…

Geneticists will be able to learn more about genes, what they do, and how they work. From the procedure and research geneticists will acquire a, “Better understanding of genetics” (Hanson). The procedure will be done using IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) and embryo screening: “Embryo screening involves a process called preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). Embryos are created by in-vitro fertilization and grown to the eight-cell stage, at which point one or two cells are removed. Scientists then examine the DNA of these cells for defects, and only normal embryos are replaced in the womb.” (Hanson). Through the procedure scientists and geneticists will be able to learn many new things about the human body. Parents can give their children genes that they could not pass on, ensuring their children have the best lives possible. The procedure will, “give parents the option of modifying their unborn children, in order to spare offspring from disease or, conceivably, make them tall, well muscled, intelligent or otherwise blessed with desirable traits.” (Parry). Parents will sleep a little easier knowing that their child will lead a healthy life. Scientists can modify the embryos to be smarter making the world smarter and possible opening up a new door to more advanced technology. According to Sarah Ly, the author of "Ethics of Designer Babies." babies are already being modified in small ways, “For example, parents keen on …show more content…

A gap in the social class will appear because not everyone will be able to afford the procedure: “suddenly people will encounter prejudice, not for their race, but for their inferior genetic makeup. It creates a new class system made up of genetically designed people and naturally made people. The people who were not genetically engineered would experience a loss of opportunity based on a chance that their defective genes will be expressed.” ("Designer Babies: The Good"). A new class system will arise because the modified humans will be superior to the unmodified humans. Another long term problem humans would face is that one gender would be preferred over another, “one gender... favored over the other. In countries such as China and India where boys are favored over girls, this technology could be used so that every set of parents that wants a baby boy will get one.” ("Designer Babies: The Good"). If one gender was prefered the reproduction rate would decrease because one gender would have more people and it take bother gender to reproduce. Genetically modifying babies could also lead to problems with evolution: “Creating a generation of genetically modified humans could mess with evolution in unpredictable ways. The premise of evolution is simply this: as environments change, the individuals in a species best suited to the new environment are selected for. Without diversity in the species,
