Proposal
For my final project, I plan to explore the theme of colleges and gun violence. More specifically, my research question is: what could be done to reduce mass shooting on college campuses, and what factors influence students’ attitudes toward gun violence? For instance, should teachers stop the students from buying firearms and carry them to campus when they see any warning behavioral problems in the student? I would also like to investigate whether mass shootings on campuses is committed by students who have a mental illness, or if it’s due to anxiety around gun violence on campuses across America creating a harmful, rippling effect. While there was a point in time where mental illness was one of the cases that lead to gun violence on campus, mental illness continues to become more common, and thus less of a clear indicator of who is most likely to commit violent gun crimes. In the article "Colleges and Gun Violence," by Glenn Meyer, he discusses the reasons behind gun violence on campus, citing mental illness and easy access to illegal firearms. However, he also states that college administrators themselves should have taken an action to stop the students from buying firearms and carrying them to campus when they see any warning signs that the students have behavioral problems. Another concern is the impact of mental illness throughout a student’s pursuit of higher education, and how that may contribute to likelihood of gun violence.
