Prometheus, in Greek mythology and literature, is known widely and most obviously for his many enthralling elements. Though there is a wide array of dissimilar stories told of Prometheus, the most dominant and popular one is told by Hesiod in his Theogony. From Hesiod’s account, Prometheus was the great Titan who defied the Greek gods and stole fire from Hephaestus for the use and helping of mankind. This act facilitated the progression for civilization. Ultimately, there are three main points for the various interpretations of Prometheus in literature and mythology, Firstly; Prometheus was punished on behalf of Zeus for his transgression. Infuriated beyond despair, he hid the helpings of human living; fire, solely due to Prometheus’ deception. Eventually, this led to the creation of Pandora; the production of all mans evils. Lastly, the depiction of Prometheus is so vast, that throughout the ages, people have popularized this myth in many different interpretations. Including those told by influential minds such as Mary Shelley. The punishment that Prometheus received as the consequence for his theft of fire became a major theme in mythology. It is now an extremely popular topic amongst the growing society as well as the ancient times. The antiquated myth tells the story of Zeus, King of the Olympian gods, fighting in a battle with the Titans. Due to Prometheus’ power of being able to see into the future, he chose to become allies and fight alongside Zeus, knowing he would win the great battle. When the Titans were all defeated, Zeus sentenced them all to Tartarus, a place known for its hell like state. While, Prometheus remained in Olympus with Zeus, he learned to create and flourish mankind; all until the day he stole fire from ... ... middle of paper ... ...ys he tricked Zeus in order to help flourish mankind with the means of fire. For this, he was punished and tortured, eventually meeting the ultimate mythological legend, the creation of Pandora, the evil to all men. Being the first women to walk among and live with the “mortal humans,” she was easily compared to the more contemporary Eve. Though giving sorrowful pain to all men, she was the bearer of procreation and life and humanity regenerating itself. The modern day Prometheus is known to embody a “lone genius” who continues to improve the human life form, but eventually results in tragedy. Influential minds create these stories to maintain the popularity of these mythological literatures to inform reader’s today and their generation. The story of Prometheus and Pandora will continue to grow and expand as time continues and powerful minds compose greater stories.
