Progressivism was not only a political idea, but a movement and political party that defined an era of US History. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, progressivism united much of the nation during a time ripe with political unrest and general discontent surrounding working conditions, living conditions, workers’ rights, and large corporations/monopolies. Progressivism sought to bring about political and social reform to advance the human condition. Between 1860 and 1900, the nation saw a clear divide as the rich increased their wealth while the poor became poorer. The Depression of 1893 saw 500 banks collapse with no safety net for the unemployed, starving, and desperate. Meaning that the strife for workers’ rights extended beyond their individual needs, but to the government which oversaw these many businesses and practices. This forced the government to adapt, leading to the People’s Party or Populist Party, often referred to as the Populists. This party believed there were many flaws in this system of economy and sought to make changes. The topic of reform became popular amongst all political parties, especially during elections. Because of the circumstances and locations of many disputes, the focus of many discussions was corporations, monopolies, and trusts. The government sought to break up companies or trusts with excessive power over a market. The goal of trust-busting is to promote competition and protect consumer rights. The U.S. Supreme Court originally ruled in favor of the Granger Laws proposed to regulate railroads and other companies.
