Program Rationale: Sports communications is the verbal and nonverbal interaction between; coaches, players, referees, managers, owners, media personnel, athletic trainers, and sport governing bodies, that occurs on a daily basis. The term “sports communications” is one that is fairly new in the professional world. However, a recent popularity has sparked a numerous amount of colleges and universities across the country to now endorse it as a program. Their offering of coursework in the field works to prepare their students to become successful professionals. Students who major in this discipline go on to work in a variety of careers. Some of those careers include; sports management, sports administration, sports broadcasting, coaching or communication specialization for a college or a professional sports team. The idea of a sports communications degree is to prepare someone to be a good communicator in a sports setting. The inclusion of the sports aspect within this degree program is of vital importance, because it teaches me the aspects of communications within a this setting. This setting is one that is vastly different than most other environments, because of the major platform that sports holds in our society. This designed major has courses in a variety of fields that will make me a versatile candidate when applying for jobs, as well as, open doors for a variety of careers within the field. Prior to drafting up this proposal I attempted to find a major at Knox that is comparable to this field. However, there was no other major offered at Knox that was able to encompass these types of classes into one major that would prepare me to be a successful professional in the field of sports
