What is professionalism in the context of being a student in a doctor of physical therapy degree program? Professionalism is beyond capability. Undeniably, professionals are great at their respected crafts and take their jobs seriously. People recognizes and understands the value of a person who has years of experience, provide great end results, and performs jobs in a timely manner. Although those traits are important it is much more complex, it’s not just what you know it’s also how you behave, and how you interact with others. She explained to me her passion for running and told me of her past involvement's in the annual Peachtree road. I then used that detail to remind her what she was working toward and the benefits that therapy will play in helping her recover. Moments later with more encouraging words she was up and ready for therapy. An equally significant quality in determining a therapist professionalism is their commitment to learning. Continued learning helps therapist expands knowledge, refine their skills and reinforce commitment. The exposure to new concepts and research-driven approaches will assist in helping patients feel more reassured. This attribute is very essential to new an upcoming physical therapist in making themselves marketable. In fact, during a conversation with one of the therapist, she explained to me about one of her former students, despite being a new grad, was able to get a job at one of the most prestigious hospitals in Georgia and was placed in the unit of her request because of the knowledge on the subject, which she had attain from an education seminar. I think that people are frustrated with the health systems and feel like their well-being isn’t in the best interest and that hospitals are only concerned about co-payment, insurance premium etc. This issue is now causing people to find different outlets for care. With that being said, today you are seeing more innovative partnerships and hybrid systems moving into the industry. In the context of therapy, you are seeing physical therapy combine elements of strength & conditioning in their practices, as well as public health working in conjunction and tying element of physical therapy as far as research in the overall approach. These hybrid styles will likely lead to more cross-discipline-collaboration. With this in mind, I can already foresee the importance of continuing education will have for future and present physical therapist. Welcoming lifelong learning shows that you are open to learning skills during the course of your career; It puts your ego in check lets you acknowledge that you must continue to learn. During my last year in college, I was given the opportunity to do a semester-long Internship in the field we desired to go into after college.
