“Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect.” Vince Lombardi

Utilizing the diagnostic tools provided through this course’s curriculum, I was able to compose a diagnostic assessment of my voice interpretation of the video titled How to Beat the Heat. The assessment pointed out my challenges in several areas such as fingerspelling, ASL Lexicons, and rhetorical questions, just to name a few. While this professional development plan will not outline every area of challenge, it will highlight the aforementioned areas as well as a few others.

Fingerspelling
According to my assessment, when a Signer is signing with the speed of a native deaf person, I do not readily recognize the signs. Depending on the situation in a real-time setting, I may have the opportunity to request that the sign be repeated. In order to continue to develop in this area, I will use several resources of which I already ascribe to which include, but are not limited to, Dr. Bill Vicars’ ASL Fingerspelling website at www.asl.ms, fingerspelling quizzes at www.aslpro.com, as well as vlogs, videos, and community relationships.

ASL Lexicon
In this area, it can be challenging to ascertain when the Signer’s intent is to specifically emphasize an area of the message by listing as in the instance of Line 21 where Mary is listing beverages that contain caffeine (Coke, Mountain Dew, Pepsi). To improve in this area of my skills, I will practice voice interpreting the listing by using general terminology or listing in an appropriate idiomatic way that does not skew the intent of the speaker.

Non-manual markers and Temporal Aspects
In this area of challenge, I think incorporating the right balance is an essential element. I can...

Because I am a visual-learner, videos will continue to be a part of my development plan both instructional and personal filming. The Described and Media Captioned Website has a number of videos for interpreters of which I already utilize as well the OIC Movies website and other websites.

Being involved in the Deaf community is also essential to my professional development. Interaction with my grandmother who is Deaf and others have and will always be a great way of continuous growth and getting feedback in order to enhance my skills as I continue to evolve as an effective interpreter.
