The professional boundaries in nursing are defined as limits, which protect the space between a professional’s power and the client’s vulnerability. When a nurse crosses this boundary, they are generally behaving in an unprofessional manner and misusing their power in the relationship. The guide to professional boundaries consists of a diagram representing a continuum of professional behaviour. This diagram provides a picture of therapeutic versus non-therapeutic behaviour in the relationship between a nurse and the patient. Additionally to this diagram is a list of guiding principles for safe, professional practice. These guiding principles consist of dual relationships and boundaries, access to or the disclosure of information, therapeutic and care relationships and gifts, services and financial relations. The purpose of these guidelines is to protect the community by helping to prevent distress, confusion, harm or abuse of people being cared for by nurses. It is intended this resource will encourage reflection, discussion and guide the decision making in all aspects of the relationship that is established when care is provided by nurses.

Legal, ethical and professional principle frameworks underpin all fields of nursing, and it is a requirement for all Registered Nurses to be competent and knowledgeable, act with integrity and maintain professional standards set out by Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC, 2015). Working with multidisciplinary teams within our profession, it is important to acknowledge and recognise the way in which all the professionals are guided by law and their independent regulatory bodies. The needs of the individual patient is to be considered by doctors and nurses alike, who share professional values and are set out in the respective codes of practice, The Code (NMC, 2015) and GMC (2013).
Nursing surrounds the concept of patient care physically, mentally and ethically. The therapeutic relationship that is created is built on the knowledge and skills of the nurse and relies on patient and nurse trusting one another. The use of nursing skills can ensure these boundaries are maintained, it allows for safe patient care. Professional boundaries are the line that nurses cannot cross, involving aspects such as patient confidentiality and privacy, ensuring legal aspects of nursing and the boundaries put in place are not breached. However, nurses accepting financial or personal gain from patient can also cross these professional boundaries. It is only through education in this area that the rights of patients can be preserved, as well as the nursing standards. Through education in areas such as confidentiality, boundaries can remain in tact and the patient care can remain within the zone of helpfulness.

The decisions made should be within the norms and values stipulated for a profession.
After pondering over the specific meaning behind professional identity and how I should answer this question, I realized that my professional identity is how I perceive myself within my occupational context. I was also going to mention some exact words that described me, however, I believe that a professional identity is not permanent. It is a concept that continues developing throughout our lives. I would like to refer to my professional identity as a process that is constantly influenced by my professors and their teaching style, by my interactions with my peers, and by the way I communicate with others. One of the things that I think is really important to me as a counselor in training, which I learned in my Master’s program, is the ability to empathize with people who come with a problem. I think empathy is a key element in the helping profession, and I enjoy learning how to do it the best possible way. Another factor that is very important to me is providing a sense of autonomy to clients and create an environment for them to feel safe to express what they are going through in life.

In conclusion, there are numerous legal and ethical issues apparent in the nursing practice. Nurses should study and be as informed as they can with ethics and legality within their field in order to ensure no mistakes occur. Professionalism in the workplace in many professions can be simplified into general categories such as neat appearance, interaction with clients, punctuality, general subject knowledge, and likability. In nursing, professionalism encompasses a much more broad and inclusive set of criteria than any other profession. Nurses specifically are held to a higher standard in nearly every part of their job. Nurses are not only expected to uphold what it seen as professional in the aforementioned categories, but they are also expected to promote health, wellbeing, and advocate for patients, but also continually provide the highest standard of care, demonstrate exemplary subject and procedural knowledge, and abide by the Code of ethics set forth by the American Nurses Association. This Code of Ethics includes the complex moral and ethical principles of autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, fidelity, honesty, and integrity.

Every nurse determines the way they will practice in the beginning of their career. More than likely these roles and values are created and sparked in nursing school. As time goes on, nurses dig deeper and establish who they are in their new role as a professional. When the metaparadigm of nursing and personal philosophy coincide with one another, individualized concepts, care, and professionalism are achieved and delivered in multiple settings. From a personal perspective, these concepts were established and developed very early in my career. Maintaining and establishing myself as a nurse remains a top priority ten years later in my practice.
