I worked as a gang detective for several years at my police department and often had to assume under cover roles to accomplish certain tasks. One of those undercover roles was on the internet via certain social media arenas. This allowed me to discover potential criminal activity before it took place. There are many ways the internet has changed the way law enforcement is able to do their jobs. Let’s examine how the internet has revolutionized law enforcement and discuss the advantages as well as the disadvantages. The mission of law enforcement has progressed greatly with the use of the internet by increasing the amount of people they can communicate with. Citizens in the community are now able to communicate with law enforcement over …show more content…
In addition to this, law enforcement has gained speed and efficiency in communicating with other agencies all over the world. This advantage has strengthened relationships and promoted cooperation within the law enforcement community. The internet and a growing dependence on digital technology has created problems for as well. The same advantages the community experiences often times transition into greater risks. People that surf the internet at times become victims of various crimes that law enforcement are called to investigate. Disadvantages also include the growth of new internet criminal behavior as well as enhancing those that already exist. The supply and demand for contraband such as pornography and illegal substances still exist and the creation of child exploitation and obscenity as well as the establishment of a platform for narcotics and weapons has surfaced in full force and never been at this level. To complicate things even further, the heightened availability in technology and other means have complicated the attempts by law enforcement to solve these types of crimes. Law enforcement around the world are continually trying to create and enforce new laws applicable to the emerging technology. We have discussed how the internet has revolutionized law enforcement along with some advantages and disadvantages. Let’s
In the United States, local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, including FBI, Department of Homeland Security, among others, have taken on roles to fight computer crimes and terrorism. The roles and responses of these law enforcement agencies concerning digital crime have created challenges that limit enforcement efforts against digital crime.
As the Rise of cyber crimes grew so did the FBI’s influence on the growing technology.
He acknowledges that criminal justice information needs good security because it is information about citizens, often at their most distressed and vulnerable. “Imagine if someone hacked and even edited video of alleged criminals before they were even charged or of child victims describing their attackers.” He notes that with all of the state and local law enforcement officers in the United States, the data requirement will be huge. The only system that can sustain such a requirement with the latest, most flexible technology would be the cloud. The cloud does pose security risks; however, the FBI has issued a policy that addresses both security and privacy issues.
Author Citron stresses the importance of the law enforcement using those tools they have to track down individuals that are intentionally and maybe even non intentionally engaging in cyber
Faceless-oriented policing comprises of guardians who see the internet being utilized as a faceless venue to commit crimes and what benefits their investigation of these crimes is that they view the cyber investigator and the offender both as faceless entities. (Walker, Brock, & Stuart, 2006) Most cyber criminals engage in the routine activities approach to crime, which suggests that criminal behavior often occur due to these three components: motivated offender; suitable target; and absence of a capable
The technology that we depend on, and use in every aspect of our daily lives, has the utmost potential to destroy our lives in mere seconds with nothing but a single keystroke. As Goodman points out, in the old days, “crime was a simple affair” because criminals were limited to only a knife or a gun; then, as technology advanced with the innovation of the train system, criminals could rob up to 200 people on a train at one time (Goodman, p. 39). Fast-forward to today’s major technological innovation – the Internet –, and we see how the crime business has scaled exponentially. Thieves have gone from robbing hundreds of individuals at a time to stealing from millions of individuals with a mere keystroke. “As a result, we are witnessing a fundamental paradigm shift in the nature of crime and how it is committed (Goodman, p.
Intelligence collection and apprehension of criminals have occurred for many years; however, with the exception of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, these actions were performed by different organizations. Nonetheless, roles and responsibilities have changed since the attacks on September 11, 2001. Intelligence-led policing and the National Criminal Intelligence Sharing program were incorporated, and fusion centers were established to help gather intelligence from different levels of the government. Although law enforcement at the local, state, and tribal levels aid in intelligence collection, it is important to ensure that intelligence gathered to protect national security and law enforcement intelligence are kept separately. Even though law enforcement operations can strengthen intelligence operations and vice versa, complications can arise when the two actions are combined. Government agencies must also ensure that sensitive and secret information does not leak or is not compromised when sharing intelligence. Therefore the purpose is to describe intelligence and law enforcement operations, discuss the expectations of prevention and punishment, and discuss the benefits and consequences of combining law enforcement and intelligence operations.
In most cases, law enforcement involves investigation of all forms of suspected, potential or actual criminal activities and presenting evidence arising from investigation to the courts for determination of criminal culpability and subsequent punishment. Law enforcement is also concerned with detaining criminal suspects pending further investigation or judicial action. These, however, are not the only responsibilities or functions of law enforcement. Law enforcement is also concerned with deterrence and prevention of crime as well as enforcement of all the orders given by the law courts such as writs or warrants. In addition, law enforcement play an important role in ensuring public safety, maintaining public order, operating c...

Based on the available information Internet crime will continue to increase. Proactive planning has been initiated to provide our community with a qualified Internet crimes investigator. Unfortunately, he is limited on the amount of time he can devote to Internet crime investigations. The recommendation wouH be to have an investigator that can work full time on Internet crime cases.
Technology has opened new encounters and opportunities for the criminal justice system. There are so many new practices of criminal activity, such as computer crimes. There are different types of computer crimes that many people become victims of every day. Computer crime is any crime that involves a computer and a network. The computer may have been used in the commission of a crime, or it may be the target ("Computer Crime: Chapter 2: What Are the Crimes?", n.d.). Crimes such as data diddling, pump and dump, social engineering and spoofing are computer crimes. Even though these crimes are difficult by privacy issues, the new technology has made investigations and prosecutions well organized and effective. Though views are different on the pros and cons of specific technological changes in the criminal justice system, there is an agreement the system has changed affectedly ("Effects of Technology in Criminal Justice | eHow", n.d.).
Today, technology has affected our global surroundings in a number of ways. Technology has created a more advanced society and economy. We use technology in every aspect of life today. New innovations and technology helps create a safer atmosphere and reduces the rate of crime. Technology is the usage and knowledge of techniques or is systems of these things. Usage of technology in the criminal justice system is not new but more apparent today. Technology in criminal justice will continue to challenge us to think about how we turn information into knowledge. Due to new technology, criminal investigations are able to maintain and improve their processes. Forensic science, DNA, other and future technology has all had a tremendous impact on criminal investigation and its process.
Throughout the years, technology has been increasing in both good and bad ways. Technology is now being used to contact people through social media, link people together through group chats, and also spy on people. Although connecting with people instantly on social media is the upside to technology usage, people often tend to share private information that can be used in the wrong way which is the downside of technology. As both technology and crime increases, technology usage is now being increased to help solve crimes. Many years ago, without the usage of technology, many aspects of a crime was not questioned or the resources to uncover certain evidence were both time consuming and/or expensive. The Police Chief Magazine list many technological improvements that have been put in place to
The 90's internet boom gave rise to new ways of writing in through access to cyberspace. What used to be printed or handwritten on physical surfaces such as paper, cardboard, or bulletin boards has changed to 0's and 1's, bits and bytes of digitized information that can be displayed thru the projections of computer screens. Moreover, the internet has made the process of publishing one's works, writing letters, or chatting with one another much easier and convenient for everyone around the globe. The internet became a universal tool, giving much freedom and flexibility to the users; it gave them opportunity to deliver their thoughts with little or no restrictions. Since it's impossible to regulate all cyber-activities, internet users are often unrestricted by the normal laws or authorities that would set boundaries around the various online transactions. More importantly, the fact that a net user can take on different identities in cyberspace brings about several ethical and social issues. These anonymous and unrestrictive characteristics of cyberspace often permite abusive users to easily involve themselves in serious cybercrimes such as cyberstalking, cyber-rape, and cyber-harassment through chatting services, emails, cyber communities, and other online communication.
Cybercrime is a global issue plaguing the world. The dictionary defines cybercrime as “crime conducted via the Internet or some other computer network”(Merriam-Webster). The definition remains very broad because the word “cyber” is defined as “relating to the culture of computers, information technology, and virtual reality.” Due to the growing number of people gaining access to the internet, rapid development of technology, and the globalization of the world, more of the world population is becoming susceptible to involvement in cybercrime – whether it be as a victim or a criminal. Cybercrime involves different levels of the world on both the victim and criminal side from an individual citizen, to small groups, businesses, and the government, to the countries of the world. There are different groups from law enforcement agencies to the U.S. Secret Service, that are attempting to combat the problem through cooperation and preemptive efforts. If these groups combined with the public to protect themselves and the country from criminals that commit cybercrime, the nation’s network and technology servers would be much safer for technology users. Clearly, cybercrime is a problem because it puts internet users at risk of being taken advantage of or harmed.
