Uniforms benefit schools by keeping students safe and able to have pride for their school. First, uniforms provide a sense of security for the school staff so they can easily identify an intruder on school grounds. Second, it will help students perform better in class and improve their grades and attendance. Students will be more focused on what they are being taught and not what they are wearing. Having students wear uniforms will enhance their school spirit. Students will have more pride in their school by wearing their school colors. Schools must carry out a uniform policy to better assist their students. No one can deny that uniforms have not helped school staff with identifying intruders or decreasing school violence. Having female students just wear everyday clothing like tank tops, or short shorts will cause a lot of attention from other students and will keep them distracted on what really matters. Kendra Newburgh, the program director of Expanded Day for Public School 188, states that, “Academics are really important, and uniforms are a piece of that. When you walk into this building as a student, you’re not focused on what someone else is wearing. You come in and you learn. Every kid sees each other like every other kid. It’s not haves or have-nots”(Otis). A huge amount of people will disagree with students wearing uniforms to school because it violates the students’ first amendment right of freedom of expression. Most people will argue that the students are not being able to express their individuality. However, they are wrong. Many schools allows their students to wear accessories with their uniform or on their backpacks or express themselves in activities and sports. Educational psychologist Michele Borba says, “It’s not the stuff you wear, it’s the stuff on the inside. Let’s start getting kids to be expressive in terms of their thoughts, their words, their deeds. When you walk into school, let’s be dressed for success and be prepared to learn”(Flam).
