“Pride is a wonderful terrible thing, a vine that bears both life and death.”, this quote is from “The Scarlet Ibis”, and the context is pride can be good and helpful or it can be bad and harmful. This is a relevant quote because it shows pride is a good and bad. This quote is like my thesis because pride can be good. Therefore, pride is an attractive trait to possess because it drives a person to accomplish tasks; proud of personal achievements and motivates us to help others success. Pride is an unattractive trait to possess. Too much personal pride can cause self destruction, “The acknowledgement that Doodle and my plan had come to a naught was bitter, and that streak of cruelty within me awakened.”(pg. 176). This shows that too much personal …show more content…
Pride drives a person to accomplish tasks. “Oh yes you can, Doodle “I said.” “All you got to do is try. Now come on,” and I hauled him up once more.(pg. 172). This example shows that the narrators pride drives him to accomplish tasks. As seen his task was to teach Doodle to walk so his pride pushed him to teach Doodle. “ They did not know that I did it for myself; that pride, whose slave I was, spoke to me louder than the others.”(pg. 173). This quote shows that the narrator was proud of himself for teaching Doodle to walk. Lastly, pride motivates us to help others find success. “Aw, come on Doodle,: I urged. “ you can do it. Do you want to be different from everybody else when you start school.”(pg.174). This quote proves my argument by showing that the narrator has enough self pride to make himself help Doodle to walk just like all the other boys his age. In conclusion, pride is a good and trait to possess, you need to have it because it helps yourself and others. The story “The Scarlet Ibis” was very important for what I am proving because it gives me many examples on how pride is a good quality to possess. So all in all, pride is an attractive trait to possess because it drives a person to accomplish task; proud of personal achievements and motivates us to help others
Pride is something that is essential in human life. Due to pride, we are able to see the joys
For someone to feel guilt for something they did is truly a horrible feeling. It is something that will carry on with that person for the rest of his life. In James Hurst's "Scarlet Ibis" Brother, the main character, feels that terrible guilt towards the way he treated his younger brother Doodle. Brother since the beginning let his pride take over and make Doodle do things that were almost impossible to learn in his condition. The story tells about two brothers growing up together and how the older brother let his pride push his handicapped brother a little to far. Brother is guilty for letting his pride get in the way of what was right and wrong. Also for letting his pride hurt someone he loves, his baby brother Doodle.
Pride frequently has terrible results. For example, as a result of Brothers pride, he left Doodle in the storm. Brother did this because he is angry that Doodle failed, and that his dream of having an “ordinary brother” is over. Doodle realizes that he failed his brother, and feels useless. In addition, after being left in the downpour, Doodle dies. At the point when Brother discovers Doodle dead, he thinks it’s his fault that Doodle dies because he pushed him too hard. After this happens, their family feels like they should’ve been more protective and love Doodle more. In conclusion, while pride can have devastating effects, it can also result in fulfillment.
The narrator reflects,”I did not know then that pride is a wonderful, terrible thing, a seed that bears two things life and death,”(Hurst 3).This quote showed that at first the narrator thought pride was good but later he became self centered and ashamed of his disabled brother and pushed him far beyond his limit. The short story called The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst is a drama where the narrator, or older brother, wishes his younger brother wasn’t disabled. Because he is so fueled by pride, the older brother ends up pushing his brother beyond his capabilities to his death. In this story, we will learn how the narrator’s pride led to the tragic death of Doodle.
Pride of the narrator teaches a physically deprived little boy Doodle how to walk and gives him the same amenities as every other normal child. The pride of the narrator, "I [he] am going to teach Doodle how to walk" (170). Pride, in this instance, gives the narrator enough courage and vigor to help another human being in a positive way. The world needs more people such as the narrator, who is willing to benefit other's lives in a tenderhearted way, to make another's life better and happier. For example, "It's so pretty, so pretty, pretty, pretty" (170). One's pride can truly take the simple pleasures in life and make someone happy. The narrator does a simple task by taking his brother down to the swamp. By that action, Doodle is enthralled in happiness because he sees something he has never seen before. Having pride can be beneficial in many ways; however, having too much pride can be pernicious.
People by nature do not like to look weak or unable in front of people due to pride, but this sense can also create problems as people will push themselves beyond their means to avoid humiliation. In “Saturday Climbing” when Barry, father of Moira is petrified of continuing climbing the cliff he had signed them up for although he does not want his daughter to know, “Unable to go back because of his pride.”(author,Page#) Once he finally reaches a point where he feels comfortable Moira asks him, ““Are you alright?” his daughter called. “Yeah,” he lied. “Just resting.” (Author,Page) Barry is so prideful he’s actually happy Moira couldn’t see him struggling, “He was glad she could not see his momentary weakness.”(Author,Page).
Pride is a very relevant issue in almost everyone's lives. Only when a person is forced to face his pride can he begin to overcome it. Through the similar themes of her short stories, Flannery O'Connor attempts to make her characters realize their pride and overcome it.
What is the effect of having too much pride? Can different forms of pride such as familial and social have different consequences? Pride is usually considered to be a positive aspect in one’s life, but too much of it can have adverse results. By observing today’s society, as well as Shakespearean society, it is clear that too much pride in any form can inhibit the ability to accept differences in people and oneself.
Even though pride can be a good thing at times, it is hurtful, it is an emotion that can make or break someone.
In James Hurst's short story, The Scarlet Ibis. Can pride be a destructive force is the thesis statement. Brother is guilty of Doodle’s death because he made Doodle work till he could not work no more, and he mistreated Doodle, because he was different.
Any great accomplishment can make someone feel proud about their work. It makes one feel good; it raises a person's spirits. "No question, pride has its good points." (The Toronto Star, Nov 1999) Then again, there are also the bad points of pride one must consider, before being proud. Pride can deceive a person into being ambitious, and make them strive for something that is not rightfully theirs. Both Macbeth and Willy encountered this problem. Pride can also cause a bad relationship with the people one loves most. For Macbeth and Willy, their relationships with their families were burdened as a consequence of this pride. Pride can lead to much worse things; it can put a person in a position to be their ultimate cause of their death, and such was the fate for Willy Loman and Macbeth. "It's an excess of pride that buys you one-way, economy coach passage to the fires of hell." (The Toronto Star, Nov 1999) In the play Macbeth and Death of a Salesman, both Macbeth and Willy are seen as tragic heroes due to their pride, as seen in these three situations.
Pride and arrogance has been the ruin of many men throughout history. As we all know anything in excess is never a good thing. The same principal
Pride is a word that we all know very well, and rarely admit if it 's a characteristic we posses. In the short stories "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" and "The Necklace," the two main characters have a strong sense of pride. In their own way each woman is manipulative, deceitful, and judgmental. As we read the stories we can tell how each woman only cared about only themselves and their happiness. They both live simple and ok lives but are not happy with what they have. Both not caring about the consequences, will do anything to get want they want. Although, pride can be seen sometimes as something positive, if used in the right way. In each particular story, we see how being prideful can turn your life from something positive into something negative.
In 1297AD, pride was described as “A consciousness or feeling of what is befitting or due to oneself or one's position, which prevents a person from doing what he considers to be beneath him or unworthy of him; esp. as a good quality, legitimate, ‘honest’, or ‘proper pride’, self-respect; also as a mistaken or misapplied feeling, ‘false pride’” (OED 4). This type of pride is personal pride and the image a person must maintain to keep it. A person cannot allow them self to act in such a way that would be demeaning. An example of this would be a drill sergeant getting down with his recruits and performing the same demeaning drills as they are. The sergeant’s years of hard work and service would not be taken seriously if he were to lower himself to the level of their recruits therefore lowering his sense of pride.
Pride can be meant in a variety of ways, but essentially means that you feel really proud of yourself, or a group you belong to. For example, your family. Pride is a passion that can spark anger if someone feels that something they’re proud of is being threatened. Tybalt was a very proud character, he was very proud of being a Capulet. He interpreted Romeo, Benvolio, and Mercutcio coming to the Capulet’s masque as an insult or even a threat to the Capulets. Tybalt says to Capulet: “By stock and honour of my kin/To strike him dead I hold it not a sin” (Act 1, scene 5, lines
