1. What is the price elasticity of demand? How is the price elasticity of demand calculated?
The price elasticity of demand as I understand it is how much demand for an item will change with a given change in the price of an item. To be more precise it is the percent change in demand per unit of time divided by the percent change in price. (Khan, "Price elasticity of demand") While most examples I could find of price elasticity of demand were linear, I do not think they would truly be that way in real life. I think they would look more like the equation of y=1/x. As the price goes up the demand would approach 0 units but possibly never reach 0 and as the price goes down the number of units demanded would approach infinity. I also think that it will be affected by things that are beyond the simple link of price and demand. I think how drastically the price is changed over a short amount of time would also effect the price elasticity. This last example could be demonstrated with a real elastic band. If you were to stretch it slowly, not making any drastic moves, it would stretch much more over time. On the other hand if you just pulled with everything you had all at once it would resist to the point of breaking.

Elasticity is the responsiveness of demand or supply to the changes in prices or income. There are various formulas and guidelines to follow when trying to calculate these responses. For instance, when the percentage of change of the quantity demanded is greater then the percentage change in price, the demand is known to be price elastic. On the other hand, if the percentage change in demand is less than then the percentage change in price; Like that of demand, supply works in a similar way. When the percentage change of quantity supplied is greater than the percentage change in price, supply is know to be elastic. When the percentage change of quantity supplied is less then the percentage change in price, then the supply then demand is known to be price inelastic.
The price elasticity of demand is a measurement that illustrates the responsiveness to changes in price of the demand. For example, it is specifically related to the simulation in regards to shifting the price up and measuring how much the demand falls. It is a percentage change in quantity. The presence of substitute goods, such as detached housing, has the effect of increasing the price elasticity of the demand. Housing is a necessity, which helps to hone down the elasticity. The revenue is maximized when the elasticity is equal to one.
We the consumer would rather pay less for any product that is needed or want. Ultimately we are the reason for high prices as well as low prices. Prices of products do not always stay the same and more popular products have higher prices than less popular products. These fluctuations, high prices and low prices are from the idea of supply and demand. Supply and demand defines the effect that the availability of a particular product and the desire or demand for that product has on price. Generally, if there is a low supply and a high demand, the price will be high (Investopedia). To understand the idea of supply and demand, the understanding of supply and the understanding of demand must be defined. The Law of Supply states that at higher prices, producers are willing to offer more products for sale than at lower prices, also that the supply increases as prices increase and decreases as prices decrease (Curriculum Link). The Law of Demand states people will buy more of a product at a lower price than at a higher price, if nothing changes, at a lower price, more people can afford to buy more goods and more of an item more frequently, than they can at a higher price and that at lower prices, people tend to buy some goods as a substitute for others more expensive (Curriculum Link). Supply and demand is defined as the relationship between the quantity that producers wish to sell at various prices and the quantity of a commodity that consumers wish to buy. In the functioning of an economy, supply and demand plays an important role in the economic decisions in which a company or individual may make.
Price Elasticity is the measure in responsiveness of consumers to changes in the price of a product or service. The evaluation and consideration of this measure is a useful tool in firms making decisions about pricing and production, and in governments making decisions about revenue and regulation. “Price Elasticity is impacted by measurable factors that allow managers to understand demand and pricing for their product or service; including the availability of substitutes, the consumer budgets for the product or service, and the time period for demand adjustments.” The proper consideration of Price Elasticity allows managers to set pricing such that the effect on Total Revenue is predictable and adjustments to production are timely. The concept of Price Elasticity is employed in the management of commercial firms and government.
Looking at price elasticity we see that the absolute value is greater than one. This means that if the company decided to increase the price of the product there would be a decrease in quantity sold. From the data we can conclude that the price elasticity is elastic. “When demand is elastic—that is Ed >;1—a given percentage increase (decrease) in price is more than offset by a larger percentage decrease (increase) in quantity sold” (McGuigan, Moyer, and Harris, 2014). Since, the product is somewhat elastic an increase in price will result in lower quantity

Marginal analysis is known as “the central organizing principle of economic theory” for its importance and applicability to many aspects of our daily lives as well as our careers (Thomas & Maurice, 2012, pp. 94). When demand is elastic as with Coca Cola products price changes affect total revenue. When the price increases revenue decreases and when the price decreases revenue increases. For Coca Cola if they notice a decrease in revenue they would offer products at a discount to increase revenue. Subsequently there is a law of supply that reflects a direct relationship between price and quantity supplied. All else being equal the quantity supplied of an item increases as the price of that item increases. Supply curve represents the relationship between the price of the item and the quantity supplied. The Quantity supplied in a market is just the amount that firms are willing to produce and sell now.
One method that Toyota can consider is using the price elasticity of demand to determine whether to increase or decrease the sale price of their automobiles. The responsiveness or sensitivity of consumers to a price change is measured by a product's price elasticity of demand (McConnell & Brue, 2004). Market goods can be described as elastic or inelastic goods as change in quantity demanded for that good. If demand is elastic, a decrease in price will increase total revenue. Even though a lower price would generate lower sales revenue per unit, more than enough additional units would be sold to offset lower price (McConnell & Brue, 2004). In a normal market condition, a price increase leads to a decreased demand, and a price decrease leads to increased demand. However, a change in income affecting demand is more complex.
That is, it is sensitive to price change, and also to the quantity demanded. This means that if many people are consuming a good, the demand is greater than if less people are consuming the good. To further clarify, take the example of attending college. In an environment where most of an individual's peers are going to attend college, the individual will see college as the right thing to do, and also attend college to be like his peers. However, in an environment where most of an individual's peers are not going to attend college, the individual will have a decreased demand for college, and is unlikely to attend.
