There are several definitions of power which include: first the ability to command influence over an individual or individual to follow one cause of actions (Vecchio, 2007). This means that an individual can control how others act and direct them to a specific cause of action. The second definition is an individual ability to control on an official capacity the conduct of others (Hogg & Knippenberg, 2003). This means that those who are controlled have an obligation to follow the instruction provided by the person in power. The first type is reward power. This is the type of influence where a leader offers his or her subject a reward for completing a given task. The followers, in this case, are motivated by the set reward. For instance, a leader may offer gifts to employees with exceptional performance to act as a motivation for others to follow his or her command (Ogulnick, 2015). For this type of power to work, the reward must be appealing to the followers since it works as an incentive for them to accomplish the given role.
The second factor is that the followers must have trust in their leader that he or she will offer the promised reward if they complete their task. A leader must be able to provide the wishes of his or her followers to continue having control over them (Hogg & Knippenberg, 2003). The reward offered ought to be equal to the task completed to ensure commitment to objective set. Wright Mills in his article “ The Structure of Power in American Society” writes that when considering the types of power that exist in modern society there are three main types which are authority, manipulation and coercion. Coercion can be seen as the “last resort” of enforcing power. On the other hand, authority is power that is derived from voluntary action and manipulation is power that is derived unbeknownst to the people who are under that power.
Power has been defined as the psychological relations over another to get them to do what you want them to do. We are exposed to forms of power from the time of birth. Our parents exercise power over us to behave in a way they deem appropriate. In school, teachers use their power to help us learn. When we enter the work world the power of our boss motivates us to perform and desire to move up the corporate ladder so that we too can intimidate someone with power one day. In Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness Kurtz had a power over the jungle and its people that was inexplicable.
John C. Maxwell once wrote, “Leadership is the power of one harnessing the power of many.” Rousseau, in The Social Contract Theory writes that leadership is necessary to create law. A leader must have the ability to provide for all, no matter the case. Thus, they must have the “power of many” in order to understand the will of the people. A population cannot create laws for itself without guidance from some higher power. An effective leader must be able to harness the power of many in order to create effective laws and rules for the collective good.

Formal power can be used by leadership to remove obstacles or roadblocks faced by employees and to make both hard and easy decisions regarding the organization. Inspiration, influence, trust, and loyalty are all elements that create a high performing and content staff and all these elements are related to the use of informal power. It is important for an effective leader to create a balance between both kinds of power in order to effectively motivate and influence their staff using power.
In order for a leader to be a leader he/she must begin with the assumption that you are the one who matters most. As a leader you have to possess that level of confidence in yourself that you are capable of leading yourself “before you can lead others”. Our society often confuses personal power, our power within, with our power over, which is about controlling others. There is a vast difference between personal power and control.

It is also important to recognize that power is specific to each situation. Power is difficult to measure and even to recognize, yet it plays a major role in explaining authority. In organizations, power is most likely exercised in situations where “the stakes are high, resources are limited, and goals and processes are unclear” (Denhardt et al, 2001). The mindset of the follower is that, their job to do what is directed of them, so they obey. Fear and coercion are often motivators for followers at level one. Maxwell, (2013) further explains that, at this level, leaders receive the least amount of the follower’s energy, effort, and mind.
