Issues that come with living in poverty such as depression, are also companied by chronic health issues. Alyssa Brown states in her article with Poverty Comes Depression, More Than Other Illnesses, published on October 30th 2012 by Gallup News, that, “Americans in poverty are more likely than those who are not to struggle with a wide array of chronic health problems, and depression disproportionately affects those in poverty the most” (Brown). Not being able to afford life necessities and struggling with living in poverty, people become stressed which leads to depression. Many people who live in poverty are unable to pay for medical assistance so neglecting them becomes a habit along with many others. Alyssa explains that, “Those in poverty report generally worse health habits than adults who are not in poverty, which may be at least partly contributing to the higher levels of chronic diseases among the impoverished. Smoking is the most significant issue for Americans in poverty -- 33% of those in poverty smoke compared with 19.9% of those who are not in poverty” (Brown) and that these bad habits also lead to more health issues such as lung cancer or liver failure. More and more of these health issues that occur leads to more things that families in poverty has to pay for but can’t. Which leads them to be more stressed unable to earn enough to be outside of the poverty threshold. Alyssa also stats that, “Those in poverty are also less likely to exercise frequently and eat fruits and vegetables regularly” (Brown). With these bad habits causing more health issues to occur and more money needed to be spent on those in poverty with these issues. Depression, lack of funds to support the family, neglecting their own health, and even finding ways to feed themselves and their family are all issues that can occur. Benjamin Irwin states in his article, 20 Facts About Living in Poverty That Rich People Never Have to Think About, published in 2015 by Everyday Feminism Magazine, that families have to, “search for affordable housing, making food last a whole month with minimal spending, skipping meals, working longer and harder than most” (Irwin). He lists these tasks that they must do because not everyone realizes what people in poverty have to go through such as finding affordable housing. With affordable housing, people in poverty do not get much of a choice in where they can live and what they can afford. Many of them are left with having to live in poorer and more dangerous areas. Next, having to make their spending on food last an entire month with minimal spending also doesn’t help with people’s or family’s economical state. People stuck in poverty are often forced to eat whatever is cheap and fast such as fast food items and junk food due to the lack of funds for healthier options and the lack of time because of constantly working and tending to other issues.
