If you are new to Bend, then you should've already noticed how many potholes there are. When you have any place where there is a hot summer with a very cold and snowy winter they're going to be potholes. The repeated thawing then freezing is why many places have potholes. This can frustrate many people around Bend. Either about how they aren't fixing them much or about how it can mess up the schedule by trying to avoid these construction crews.
Potholes are formed when water gets inside the asphalt and then the winter weather freezes the water causing it to expand. Then this happens many times forming really big potholes. The water coming from the rain or snow runoff erodes the soil beneath the asphalt. As cars drive over these areas the

Potholes damage cars causing bent rims, flat tires, alignment issues as well as other damages and accidents. The cost to the city to keep on top of repairs and pay for the contractors this year alone in Bend greatly exceed their budget. When interviewing Pam Harrington, a local Bend resident, about her experiences with potholes, she said " It's a big problem in Bend! As the winter progresses so does the pothole problem. There is one pothole near my fathers apartment on the East side of town that is so large. It's about four feet square and very dangerous! When it's dark, if you are not aware that it is there, you are in big …show more content…
According to an article on KTVZ.com, Bends city risk manager, Brenda Mingus states " It comes down to whether the city had knowledge of the pothole, and whether the city responded in a reasonable time to repair the pothole." As a citizen, you should notify the city when you notice any potholes that can do harm. If your car is damaged striking a pothole on a Bend city street, a driver can file a claim with the city, which is investigated by the city's insurance carrier.
Though potholes are big problem for Bend, especially in the winter, but the diligence of Bends city road crews, and the help of responsible drivers to report potential problems the continual fight against potholes can be alleviated and problems minimize, it's a constant battle but one that can be
Throughout the book Tom Lewis goes back and forth between the good and bad that came about from building highways. While the paved roads connected our country, made travel time faster, provided recreation, and pushed the development of automobiles they also created more congestion and travel time, divided communities, and made us slaves to automobiles. The author is critical of the highways, but he does realize the great achievement it is in the building of America. Lewis said, “As much as we might dislike them, we cannot escape the fact that ...
It can also be hit by a car going in the opposite direction. The magnitude of this collision will be much greater because it involves objects going in opposing directions. This is why the worse rock chips are often from cars going in the opposite direction, and why it is possible to throw rocks at yourself, which often do not do any damage.
Black carbon, lung toxicity and high levels of toxicity in soil have been blamed on both brake debris and tire particles. The amount of debris from the brakes depends on two factors, the weight of the vehicle and how often the driver uses their brakes. The heavier a vehicle is the more resistance is needed to apply pressure to the brakes causing more debris/particles to fly off
Following the containment of the Waldo Canyon fire, there were several major flash floods in this area and one particular deadly flood resulted in destroyed homes, vehicles and loss of life. The town of Manitou Springs incurred damages of $374, 755 and has received state funding in the amount of $2, 374, 423 for flood mitigation projects within the town (ManitouSpringsgov, 2013). Most of the flash flooding damages occurred to the state highway system that runs through Manitou Springs and continues west towards the continental divide in the Rockies. The Colorado Department of Transportation reported that over $400 million in state highway damage occurred during the 2013 flash floods (CODOT, 2014). Many commuters were required to take an alternate route as this part of the highway was unavailable until repaired. These flash floods were severe due to the burn scar from the Waldo Canyon fire. To date costs are occurring to mitigate the effects of these flash floods. Potential flooding is also a concern with the Black Forest burn areas but no significant flood damage has occurred in this
This year, has been very different from the normal. The high temperatures are in the low teens accompanied with sleet and ice. To say that we are unaccustomed to this weather is an understatement. We do not know how to prepare for it. We panic and head to the store to buy anything we can, even if it is something silly like eighty cans of Spam. Our road crews seem unprepared and don’t know exactly how to handle the situation. The crews that are in charge of maintaining a safe road way can make things worse, if they do not diligently do their jobs.
In comparison, Houston has a many freeways, tollways, highways, and major streets that are always under
...believe that the state should consider putting more money into repairing roads, both gravel and highway, so they are useable. Many of the people who do not live in town and use the gravel roads everyday could benefit tremendously from this.
During the winter season, the water that accumulated beneath the roads became frozen. They, therefore, increased in mass, thus breaking the hard ground covering that were put on the roads during their initial construction. The cracks, therefore, led to the formation of the potholes.
One is the cost of the project. The office might consider the money could be used towards other upgrades such as the playgrounds, the pool, or other necessities. Another is the construction. The office might not want to have to block traffic when residents are trying to leave or come home. Furthermore, will the residents and others actually use the crosswalks when finished? However, the money should be spent on crosswalks because of a safety issue. Spending the money on the crosswalks can end up saving residents’ and others’ lives preventing further tragedies from occurring. As far as the construction, whomever is putting up the crosswalks can split the road up into different sections to keep the traffic flow. A detour could also be created having drivers go around the opposite way to their house or wherever they need to go in the neighborhood. The neighborhood office should send out a letter to all residents addressing the crosswalks are for their safety and should be used at all times. As for all non-residents to help them understand the importance of using the crosswalk, put a banner at the entrance stating a certain date all crosswalks will be utilized when crossing the
The Central Artery Tunnel Project, more commonly known as the Big Dig, is said to be the largest, most complex and technologically challenging highway project in American history. It is the culmination of decades of planning and forethought and is hoped to alleviate the traffic congestion that has plagued the Boston area since the invention of the automobile. The project incorporates a major underground highway system, a revolutionary cable-stayed bridge, and a series of impressive tunnel crossings, each a considerable feat on their own, all constructed in the midst of a bustling city.
every year in every state. If we could start to fix some of these problems the road might be a
Although driving to and from places is a normal part of many people’s daily routine, it is often forgotten that driving is a dangerous task that demands all attention of a driver for the safety of the occupants of a vehicle. For our safety, cities must provide the best roads and intersections to keep driving a safeguarded activity. As a resident of Tomball and a driver on the roads, I have noticed that the feeder road at the intersection of S.H. 249 and F.M. 2920 located next to Lowe’s and Chase Bank has caused big issues for drivers. Ever since S.H. 249 became a toll road, many Tomball residents have avoided paying high fees for driving short distances by taking this service road. This has caused much more traffic, especially, during rush hour around this area. Many businesses such as Ross, Target, Academy, and Chick Fil A are located here, and are contributing factors to the congestion. I myself have had a few close calls at this intersection. However, the issue did not become apparent to me until my best friend was in an accident at this intersection. Fortunately, she walked away ...
No one would probably expect a enormous sinkhole in the middle of the road. By the way, It is hard to see a sinkhole while driving during the dark hours. Based upon my experience, I nearly went straight into the sinkhole while driving one night. My husband screamed for me to stop. I was shaken up for the rest of the night. It is inconsiderate that the
During my under graduation I have learnt only about basics of pavement materials and different layers of pavements. It was only after studying graduate courses I realized how limited my knowledge was and I need to work very hard and explore more in this vast field. During first year of my graduate study I have studied Pavements Materials, Pavement Design and Evaluation, Highway Construction Practices and these graduate courses opened a new paradigm for me to the way I looked at pavement engineering. This prompted me to look at it as a field full of challenges which make it even more dynamic and op...
Safety in every aspect of my life is very important. From the moment we step out of our homes we take safety measures such as locking all doors to keep thieves out and or ensuring the stove and any electronics are off to avoid any fire. In this essay I will discuss different safety topics that we encounter on daily basis.
