Title: “Home Economics in Schools” by Anida Danovic Position Statement: Every high school should provide a home economics class. Central Idea: Many students feel like they are moving on after high school with no knowledge of real life situations. INTRODUCTION Attention-getter: A statistic. A new national survey released by Achieve shows that approximately 50% of recent high school graduates report gaps in preparation for life after high school. Audience Motivation: Most of my audience are recent high school graduates, who feel the same way. Credibility: I am a recent high school graduate, just like my audience. We are all going through the same struggles. Purpose Statement: Convince my audience to agree with me, and ask them to write to Parents may have bad communication skills. If they were able to take this class, that may be different, but not requiring this class just passes this on to future generations. [Transition]: Overall, these reasons should be strong enough to have this a required class in all schools across America. CONCLUSION Summary: Today we have seen the reasons on why a home economics class should be required. It would create a stronger future for our children, helps teach quality, and helps the parents that do not have the time to teach their children these things. Visualization: Imagine being able to leave high school with a better knowledge of how to balance a textbook, create a simple meal, pay taxes, or buy a house. We would all be more motivated to have an even more successful future. Challenge: This may be a grand idea that will not happen all over the whole country overnight, but we can start locally. Write to local selected officials and sign a petition. Re-focus Statement: I know that all of us are already out of high school and this doesn’t really directly effect us anymore, but this is something that would help our younger siblings and maybe even future children, which could help create a better future.
