What makes a city a great place to live? Is it things like cost of living, jobs opportunities, or schools? Or is it things more like recreation, sustainability, and environment quality? Well whatever it is, Portland, Oregon most likely has it covered, which makes it one of the best places to live in America. I’ll be judging Portland on the criteria above as well as other things that make this magnificent city stand out. I lived in the suburbs of Portland for my entire childhood and visited the city any chance I got and was able to experience all the things that make this city one of the best in the country. I have also traveled to many different cities across the U.S. and there is no city that I have visited that is anything like Portland and that’s what I love so much about my hometown, its like nowhere else. Other than the fact that Portland was named the best American city in 2013 by Movoto Blog, the city’s natives have always considered it the best place to live because all of the things it has to offer. Such as its relative low cost of living compared to other major west coast cities. Major companies like Nike Inc., Columbia Sportswear, Intel Corp, and Fred Meyers all either got their start in Oregon or have built major faculties’ in the area which give residents exciting job opportunities with great companies. And as of recently, Portland has hit a 5 year low in unemployment at 6.4% that is just under the nations average unemployment rate of 6.7%. As for schools, Portland has more than 150 K-12 schools that receive good ratings and reviews and tons of colleges, universities and specialized colleges that give students a long list of choices to chose
My first reason why the northeast region is the best is it has many very important historical landmarks. For example it has the White House, the Washington Monument, and the Statue of Liberty. Best of all that's not them all! Once when I was little, I went to the Washington Monument and was so cool, there were artifacts, stories, cool information. It basically had everything. Some relocate because of employment opportunities, warmer weather, to be closer to family or simply for a change of scenery. The reasons for moving are as abundant as the options when considering city or suburban life. When considering either choice, one may be attracted to the luxurious high rises and breathtaking views of the city or the sprawling greenery and family oriented atmosphere of the suburbs. Whether moving around the corner or across the country, consideration of cost, commute and community may be the most important factors in determining if city or suburban living is the best choice for you.
Everyone hates how the city is neither cold or warm, but everyone loves the opportunities that San Francisco has to offer. San Francisco is the home of technology, music and art, and there is a way in for anyone. Another great feature about the city is how open it is, too all the different cultures. My parents themselves would never go back to their homelands, because San Francisco is better than Belarus or Ukraine. People are free to think and act, and are not controlled by the government. As someone, who was born in the city, I am thankful for all the people not originally from our small city. I have the chance to meet people from all over the world, some from different countries, states, and even those just a few cities away. One major issue affecting many people trying to make the decision on where to live is their quality of life in either extreme. Health, education, transportation are three major concerns that many consider. In a city, pollution surrounds you wherever you step whether on the streets of a busy financial district or on the lawn of a large park. Pollution could possibly cause health problems later in life. In the country, pollution is scarce. Fresh air, rolling green hills, a few pieces of litter here and there but pretty much everything is clean, and wow! No smog, you can see the stars! In the country, childhood education, kindergarten through twelfth grade, is significantly better than in a large city; smaller class sizes and larger budgets create excellent learning environments. In cities, public schools are often plagued with very large classes packed into small spaces. Teachers with low pay, and little or no dedication are thrown into classrooms to teach, resulting in poor education. Transportation is very accessible in city environments. Public transportation, by way of subways, busses and ferries, are cheap and easy ways of getting around a metropolis, whether going out to work, school, or for a night on the town. In the country, everyone needs to have access to his or her own vehicle. A commute to work or school is about an average of forty-five minutes!
