UMUC Haircut’s has been a successful organization for almost two decades, yet more recently there have been threats geared towards to the future and success of the business. I am writing this paper to inform Myra(Owner of UMUC Haircut’s) about the impactful forces aimed towards her business, along with a generic strategy to combat any known threats. Finally, I would like to propose which strategic business area needs improvement at UMUC Haircut’s. I plan to propose immediate action towards increasing brand exposure and customer information using an inbound marketing approach.
UMUC Haircuts needs to address all five of Porters Five Step analysis. This analysis should start with the threat of new entrants. This force involves competition effecting the overall growth and success of UMUC Haircuts and it holds a negative impact on the organization. This force should affect Myra’s strategy, and any future planning with this organization. Another force is the threat of substitute products or service. This threat is similar to the threat of new entrants and should not be taken lightly. When an organization is threatened by a substitute product or service, they may fall victim to a loss of clientele; mainly due to the fact that the product or service may be cheaper or of better quality. This force will negatively affect Myra and should cause her to modify her business strategy. Rivalry among existing competition is another force, yet does not negatively nor positively affect her business. Myra has been able to keep up with existing competition for almost 20 years; this should not be a problem now. In order to fulfill the area of improvement, UMUC Haircut’s should focus on improving their customer information and marketing processes. One of the most effective ways to marketing a business is through in-bound marketing. In-bound marketing involves a firm promoting their organization through blogs, social media and websites. All of these forms of in-bound marketing can be useful when attempting to promote an organization. Using social media and creating a company website will be the first steps to increasing brand exposure and knowledge of customer information. Creating a website can allow buyers to view products and services and possible schedule appointments. These “digital” appointments can allow UMUC Haircut’s to become more organized and while fulfilling the needs of customers. In addition, inbound marketing is cost efficient and time efficient.
As strategy consultants of McCormick & Associates, we use Porters Five Forces Model as a framework when making a qualitative evaluation of a firm's strategic position (Appendix 1.2). These five forces determine the competitive intensity and therefore attractiveness of a market. These forces affect the ability of a company to serve its customers and make a profit. A change in any of the forces normally requires a company to re-assess the market place.
Porter’s Five Forces is defined as threats of new entrants, bargaining power of suppliers, power of buyers, the threat of substitutes and rivalry among existing competitors. New entrants into the industry aim to gain market share from rivals, so the intensity of competition may require to make changes on current strategy of marketing to maintain existing market share. To perform the Industry Analysis it is better to follow Michael Porter's five forces model. This analysis framework was created so that it helps managers in their task to analyze competitive forces to the company. The objective of corporate strategy should be to modify these competitive forces in a way that improves the position of the organization. Porters model supports analysis of the driving forces in an industry. Based on the information derived from the Five Forces Analysis, management can decide how to influence or to exploit particular characteristics of their industry.
Over the last decade, product marketing and ways through which communication takes place between manufacturers and consumers has changed tremendously (Belch & Belch 2004). Due to the technological revolutions and the rise of innovations such as the mobile phones and the internet, control over information has shifted apparently from the manufacturer's hands to the hands of consumers (Belch & Belch 2004). The market environment has also changed due to globalization of marketing strategies, loss of confidence in media advertising, increased reliance on targeted communication methods, and media fragmentation and so on (Belch & Belch 2004).
Porter’s five forces is a framework for analyzing an industry and business strategy development. It looks at forces that determine the competitive intensity of an industry and hence the overall attractiveness of that industry. The configuration of the five forces differs by industry. Understanding the competitive forces and their underlying causes reveals the roots of an industry’s current profitability while providing a framework for anticipating and influencing competition over time.
For assessing the industry profitability, Porter 5 Forces analysis tools were used to analyze one organization evaluation. In this case, the technique were used to analyze 7-Eleven Convenience Store specifically in Malaysia. Porter 5 Forces consists of 5 important area which is Threat of New Entrants, Bargaining Power of customers, Threat of substitute Products and services, Bargaining Power of suppliers, and competitive rivalry within the industry. Theoretically, the more powerful these forces in an industry, the lower its profit potential. The strength of each force differs by industry and changes over time. The competitive advantage that 7-Eleven has using these five forces is it has raised the barrier of entry for other competitors to enter the convenience store market as new competitors will require a huge capital investment in order to implement the information technology in their business in order to be competitive. Also, hypothetically being the first in the market, 7-Eleven could have made contracts with the Malaysia government to not allow other 24-hour convenience stores in the market for a certain time period, such as Astro had done, thus having a monopoly market in the beginning of their operations which will allow them to target a bigger market share.
The Porter five forces model (see Appendix 1) as an external analysis tool was established by Michael E. Porter and firstly announced in his book “Competitive Strategy: Techniques for Analyzing Industries and Competitors” in 1980 . Throughout this paper, I will define marketing, offering my personal definition as well as more formal definitions from other sources.
