3.2 Repositioning a Brand
Due to the fact that changing times imply as well a change of society and its changing wants and needs, companies have to be aware that a brand’s position should be adapted to a newly developed lifestyle. “All brands need to be revital-ized on a regular basis in order for them to be kept fresh, vital, and relevant to the contemporary market.” (Keller/Sterthal/Tybout 2002, p. 86).

3.2.1 Introduction
As a result of an existing dynamic environment, the repositioning of a brand rep-resents a given advanced development of its positioning, according to Homburg and Krohmer (2006). This is based on the fact, that the small market volume does not enable brands a dynamic development of its positioning. At the opposite extreme, there are markets, which are constantly subjected to change in customers’ needs and preferences. The increasing heterogeneity of this kind of markets represents a challenging aspect for a positioning and requires high individualization (cf. Feddersen 2013, p. 54).

Identity based brand management has its main cause for repositioning, if a brand’s consistency and continuity are harmed. Continuity requires the retention of a brand’s essential characteristics over time. Consistency refers to the avoid-ance of controversy within the repositioning strategy in comparison to its former positioning. The major importance is to not overstretch the repositioning by changing too many characteristics of the brand, which would otherwise lead to a destroyed brand identity (cf. By communicating a new value proposition, brand management aims to change the brand’s former brand percep-tion and link the new brand image to the new position. Of course, also within re-positioning, new attributes have to demonstrate points of difference and superi-ority. By emphasizing the brand’s uniqueness, management enables the cus-tomer to perceive higher brand value in their mind (cf. Friis 2009, p. 19). If the brand elements are not relevant for the target audience or the brand proposition was not chosen correctly, brand identity will not be perceived as credible and communication will fail. Therefore, companies have to analyse their target groups accurately before choosing new attributes, which they want to communicate. Management has to find out what are the target audience’s needs, wants and desires and what do they believe in. The organizations values should in best case overlap with the values of the audience.
