Pornography and Feminist Fight for Women’s Rights
There was a complaint in 1992 about having The Nude Maja in a classroom. The complaint came from a feminist English professor who stated that the painting made her students, as well as herself, uncomfortable. Another incident occurred at the University of Arizona when a female student’s photographic artwork consisting of self portraits in her underwear was physically attacked by feminists. There was also an occurrence at University of Michigan when some of their law school feminists organized a conference “Prostitution: From Academia to Activism”. This group removed a feminist-curated art exhibition held in conjunction with the conference. They felt that videos showing prostitutes at work was pornographic and unacceptable(Faigley & Selzer, 539).
Major Claim
The influential feminist pro-censorship movement threatens the women’s rights movement it professes to serve. It is led by law professor Catharine MacKinnon and writer Andrea Dworkin. The feminist movement thinks that sexually oriented expression-not sexist concepts of marriage and family, sex segregated labor, or pent-up rage is the cause of discrimination and violence of women. Their solution is to suppress “all” pornography. These are not the beliefs of Nadine Strossen, President of the American Civil Liberties Union, which is an organization that is famous for defending the rights of U.S. citizens in the First Amendment. She is claiming that pornography is a way to strengthen womens rights. I don’t see how displaying women as objects, and putting them in films portraying the abuse of them in a sexual manner is helping to protect their rights(Faigley & Selzer, 540).

I think women should stand up and fight for the rights they know they deserve. Women should be able to see themselves in a sexual matter without having to feel submissive, used, and dehumanized at the same moment. We women are powerful and I hope more powerful women like MacKinnon and Dworkin stand up, for then men will have no choice but to face the fact that it’s wrong and it’s going to change forever.

She mentions how the feminist views pornography as obscene and offence to women. They want pornography to be censor but it goes against the First Amendment right. She disagrees with the feminist idea of censoring pornography because it would be wrong to want to take the right of the U.S. citizen the freedom to express them. Susan Brownmiller is a feminist, the founder of Women Against Pornography, and an author of several books (57). The essay “Let’s Put Pornography Back in the Closet” comes from the book Take Back the Night, published in 1980 (57). She clearly wants to inform and persuade the audience of this essay to believe that pornography is degrading to women. In her introduction, Brownmiller tries to gain the reader’s sympathy by stating, “Free speech is one of the great foundations on which our democracy rests” (57). However, she does not think that pornography should be protected under the First Amendment. Her reasoning is biased and based on her own moral beliefs.
...net. I liked the valid points and evidence that she gave to get pornography removed from the public because they had some sense to them. I also like some of the methods that she used. I agreed that pornography has a negative influence on our society, I agree that pornography is degradable to women because they are obviously being used as objects, and the statement that pornography is being forced on a lot of people who don’t even go looking for porn or even compelled to look at porn isn’t true. It just flaunts itself. And the last but not least, my final reason for porn to be removed from the public is that people will begin to think it’s an art. Overall from Susan Brown Miller’s persuasive essay about how pornography has many negative influence and effects on our society, I am persuaded to agree with the conclusion of taking pornography of public shelves.

The Radical Feminist arguments against pornography were addressed and negated, as not having any empirical support to their theoretical claims. A few sets of numbers convey both the change and its rapidity. The percentage of marriages preceded by cohabitation rose from about 10% for those marrying between 1965 and 1974 to over 50% for those marrying between 1990 and 1994 (Bumpass and Lu 1999, Bumpass & Sweet 1989); the percentage is even higher for remarriages. Paranormal can be defined as pertaining to an occurrence or perception beyond or lacking scientific explanation. Ranging from mythical creatures to the existence of ghosts to fortune telling, the average person’ experience with the paranormal is very mysterious and often filled with doubt. Because paranormal activity by definition cannot be explained by scientific reasoning, researchers in these phenomena have sought to address this doubt by attempting to provide concrete evidence for their existence.
