In recent years pop electronic music has become the new hit genre among many listeners. The repetition of sounds in a single form is a popular art form for artists to easily manipulate and with the help of new recording technologies, it is an extremely easy process to produce several pieces. But even with the availability of Avant-garde technologies, there are still artists who come up with creative ways to be expressive even with sound by using not so common materials. Zimoun, a Swiss artist who was never been traditionally trained, considers himself an autodidact. He produces his work simply from instinct, usually having no direct inspiration or reference, and this sense of freedom shines through his pieces giving him an undeniable artistic …show more content…
He translates the digital editing process into a visual and physical presentation, therefore making the process the main focus, rather than just moving from the beginning to end. Starting at a young age Zimoun had been intrigued with all aspects of the arts. And with the combination of all these components he came to realize the viable role sound plays even in the visual art fields. Furthermore, Zimoun began to explore the possibilities of different structures that could be produced by using minimal, but effective materials. In his interview with Marco Mancuso, Zimoun explains that his “focus lies on the altercation between void, density, space, structure, interfacing, statics and balance.” He is constantly inspired by the movement and evolving of living and static structures in a specific given space. This growing interest of movement and evolvement pushes him to choose his materials very carefully that will generate systematic structures in a specific manner. Zimoun’s use of minimalistic materials to create complex sound structures makes a statement about the presence of technology in our lives today and allows the viewers to use their imagination to explore his sound …show more content…
The use of these minimal materials lets the audience imagination go beyond what just the visuals have to offer. His main materials consist of simple metal strands, wires, small DC motors and cardboard. Furthermore, in the Wall Street Journal article, it is discussed how Zimoun makes use of plastic bags and microphones to create standardized noises that reflect the commotion of our daily lives in the western hemisphere. Zimoun’s work has been compared to artist who are often seen creating their own musical instruments in the article, “Musical Robotics”. The sounds structures he creates has a consistent tone, similar to a musical instrument. In the article, “Making Computer Music” author Valle, talks about how the materials that are being used are usually the huge amount of wasted resources we have lying around in our capitalist system. Which makes Zimoun’s installations extremely relevant with the popular recycling policies, all over the globe. Zimoun uses overwhelmingly large spaces to host these complex sound ecosystems, so in a way they look misplaced while making a statement about the mesh of our organic and materialistic world. By doing so, the viewer walks into an activated space that is humming with thousands of motorized objects which makes a direct reference about the constant existence of technology that is always droning in the background but is shielded from our
Daft Punk have been very influential in the ways that they produce and perform., from revolutionising the Electronic music genre to changing the way artists perform and interact with their crowd.
Steven Connor delves into the mixing and creating of sound by computerisation, as well as the habits of sound; it’s immersion, pathos and objectivity.
Major social and economical changes occurred in the United States during the time of 1917-1935. At the beginning of the time period the United States military entered into World War I. Over the next twenty-three years’ important events that took place included the Eighteenth Amendment, starting prohibition, the Nineteenth Amendment, giving women the right to vote, and the United States entering into the Great Depression. In chapter three of American Popular Music the author describes these events in direct correlation to the music history. Major points regarding what influenced the nations culture and identity included the popularization of radio, the Jazz Age, and the successful Paul Whiteman.
For this essay I will be looking at the work of Hans Zimmer to discuss how music in film engages the viewer and evokes emotion and pulls the viewer toward the film. Hans Zimmer is a German born music composer. Hans Zimmer’s love of music stems from his childhood when he learned how to play various instruments. Before Zimmer began composing music for films he was in a well-known band. The band was called The Buggles whom were famous for their song Video Killed the Radio Star. After the Buggles Zimmer played in other bands but never had another hit. As Zimmer has progressed as a film composer so has his list of nominations and awards. Zimmer has won 4 Grammy Awards and 2 Golden Globes and many more for his outstanding film scores. The reason I chose to write this essay on Zimmer was that his genres and music score are extremely versatile ranging from animations to comedy to dark thrillers. This is important to highlight as it shows Zimmer can create almost any atmosphere with his music whether it be sad or creating tension that all cause us to engage with the film. Zimmer's use of themes and introduction of different instruments allowed him to create these wonderful engaging film score. In this essay I will look at three films by Hans Zimmer these are The Holiday Rush and Rain Man.
Shirin Neshat is a multi versatile Iranian artist and filmmaker. Her artistic works cover the fields of photography, video and sound installations, and film. However, she is mostly known and highly regarded for her video work. More importantly, I want to investigate the purpose behind the implementation of sound in her video installations and its importance. Specifically Turbulent (1998), Rapture (1999), and Soliloquy (1999). As she’s stated repeatedly, sound is always a very important part of her videos. In some instances of her videos, the sound aspect has a deeper and more conceptual value than the visual itself, meaning that perfecting this part of her video pieces is of huge significance for her.
The Use of Electronic Technology in 20th and 21st Century Music In this essay, I have examined the use of electronic technology within 20th and 21st Century music. This has involved analysis of the development and continuing refinement of the computer in today’s music industry, as well as the theory of the synthesiser and the various pioneers of electronic technology, including Dr. Robert Moog and Les Paul. Also within the essay, I have discussed the increasing use of computers in the recording studio. The computer has become an indispensable tool in ensuring that both recording and playback sound quality is kept at the maximum possible level. Many positive ideas have come from the continued onslaught of computerisation.
Although Nauman is now one of the most talked about artists in today’s world, art was not always his main interest. As a child Nauman was shy and often alone, as a result he was very passionate about music. He studied piano, guitar, and upright bass and played in bands throughout high school and college. Having a childhood filled with music has influenced his works and contributes to the success of his use of sound and rhythm in his videos and installations. Nauman graduated from college into a career of painting but soon realized that he could not get the reactions from his viewers that he wanted through the medium of paint and began to explore sculpture. His sculptures are known for being non-functional and being made from “non-art” materials. Nauman then turns to incorporating video and sound into his sculptural installations, and then creating complete video works. In his later years he begins producing “sculptures” that are neon signs, often provocative and suggestive. Throughout Nauman’s life, he has continued to influence the art world through each of his ...
Within much of the musical world, the use of music with varying forms of animation, ranging in type from educational and children’s shows, to historical and basic entertainment genres, have continually been used as cultural constants since the beginning of early television programs. From the early silent black-and-white films of the early 20th century to the Hollywood blockbusters of the modern-day United States and elsewhere, music performed with classical and modern films have played a central role in how people enjoy music. With the importance of music to many global cultures, the need for far-reaching cultural icons is quite important through film and animation as well, helping to attract a wide range of viewers. Even in the realm of animation, many musical compositions are highly popular as a result of well-regarded animated films and shows. One portion of the world where animation is held in higher regard outside of the West is in Japan, where Japanese animation, also simply known as “anime” is often a popular facet of life than can been seen in many parts of Japanese life. In some instances such as shopping, watching television shows, and even during the daily commute to work in some cases, anime is a well-seen part of Japanese life for many individuals. Given that the artistic genre of anime itself can be seen in different views, the music within this animation style can be seen the same way as well, drawing influences from multiple musical genres to create songs and themes are inherently tied to a certain show. The influence of the music that is present in many anime shows is very distinct and varied, as there is no clear distinction between what can be considered as a genre that can be anime-...
Sound is what brings movies to life, but, not many viewers really notice. A film can be shot with mediocre quality, but, can be intriguing if it has the most effective foley, sound effects, underscore, etc. Sound in movies band together and unfold the meaning of the scenes. When actors are speaking, the dialogue can bring emotion to the audience, or, it can be used as the ambient sound. Music is one of the main things to have when filmmaking. The use of Claudia Gorbman’s Seven Principles of Composition, Mixing and Editing in Classical Film gives audiences a perspective of sound, and, how it can have an impact on them.
Music and the relationships of music have changed drastically in our society. The course of studies and the evaluations of the applications of the technology of music, the making and the listening of music have changed in the way we listen to music, the styles of music in our society and in the media. The importance of the technology in music today, has, over the past century been charted through the study of musical examples and through viewing how human values are reflected in this century's timely music. There are very many different types of music that are listened to. There are readings, writings, lectures and discussions on all the different types of music.
In a search for a definitive and user-centered working model of interactivity in the arts, a logical place to look is at the history of cybernetics. Cybernetics, defined by Norbert Wiener in Cybernetics: or Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine as “…the entire field of control or communication theory, whether in the machine or in the animal” (Wiener 11) contains a number of pointers to a useful model of interactivity. The origin of the term cybernetics from the Greek, meaning “to steer”, implies a reciprocal relationship between external forces, the machine, and the human to maintain a condition of homeostatic. In a work of interactive art, as in Wiener’s description of a bee-hive, the secret of its organized action lies “in the intercommunication of its members” (156). A second fertile site to mine for understanding the nature of interaction in the arts is the traditions and conventions of the art object itself; at how the art object is thought to project feeling and meaning , to change across time and culture, and to involve the viewer, temporality, and artist in a dynamic interchange within an aesthetic dimension. Toward these ends, I will address two questions:...
...tative will apply the discussed techniques to his own performance. Furthermore, it will be defined how the representative will attempt to push the performance boundaries even further. A similar set progression to Schulz‘s will followed, but the energy will build up sooner the duration is limited to thirty minutes. The first 10 minutes will focus on the progressive side of Trance music and will be gradually building up. The middle of the set will introduce a more melodic, vocal type of music, whereas the peak of the set will be emphasised by a faster and ‘classic‘ type of Trance music. Mainly, the performance will focus on beatmatching and cohesiveness. Nevertheless, great consideration will be devoted to apply various effects more frequently. For that purpose, music will be played from both digital (Laptop combined with Ableton sotware) and hardware (CDJ‘s) domains.
Music: the art of organized noise. The blend of pitch and rhythm combined in different mediums and enjoyed by our ears. A very interpretive art, music isn’t very clearly constricted or defined by one definition. With so many varieties of music, it’s difficult to say what aspect is really the most important. Some people think music’s history and the appreciation of music are the most important aspects to take into consideration. Some think complex in rhythms and melodies make the best music. Some people devote their whole lives to studying one genre of music in order to fully understand how that genre works. While all of these aspects of music are important, none of them can truly be compared with each other on a fair playing field. Music of different genres, eras, and geographic backgrounds were written for different purposes, different people, and different settings. Still, there is still one overarching theme that applies to all forms of music new or old: the way the composer presents his or her creation. The performance and presentation of a work of music is like the icing on the top of a cake. The cake may be the best you’ve ever tasted, but if the icing on the outside doesn’t look appealing or doesn’t taste good, chances are you’ll take a different piece of cake with better looking frosting next time. The performance of music is what appeals most to people. With live performance, an artist must “sell” his or her creation. They must put smile on their face and convey to the audience that this is their music and through the music explain why it’s awesome. They must persevere through whatever the stage, the audience, and their surroundings give them and put on a good show. In today’s popular music though, this aspect of showma...
In just about every home in America at just about any given time the words: “It all sounds the same these days!” is uttered to a teenage child, while the mother is screaming “Turn it down!” in the background. The teenager storms to his bedroom and turns the radio up to full volume and thinks, “They just don’t get it!” Then proceeds to dance around the room singing into the hairbrush. This is the pleasure principal of pop music. Whether accredited to innocence or ignorance, a unreconciled naivety has survived this culture since its inception. They’re everywhere. We cannot escape the wrath of teen pop bands, you can love ‘em or hate ‘em, but they are a representation of an ever changing culture.
Throughout the semester, we have intensively studied how computer science relates to the world around us, through video games, database systems, and artificial intelligence. But what we have not discussed is how all of these subjects in computer science, like pep8, pseudo code, gates and circuits, relate to our artistic world; dance, music, and live theatre. Listening to a piece of music, or as an audience member watching a dance or theatre performance, one assumes that the entire production, stemmed solely from the creativity of those involved. What most do not realize, is the intensive knowledge of computer science that these artists are required to have to make a production happen. The technical crew of a show raises the curtain on technical and theatrical automation, and a musician uses many different software programs to create digital music. But what would happen if these responsibilities were given solely to an intelligent computer? Or moreover, what would happen if a computer was given the aptitude for the same artistic understanding that is required to do these forms of art? This kind of intelligent environment could expand the expressive potential of the arts and in computer science in many ways, but how will it affect the viewers and performers perception of the traditions of music, dance, and theatre? While intelligence technology often enables new ways of creation, it can also harbor a lack of creativity in the arts, and lacks the “real world” knowledge that an artist, musician, dancer, or choreographer has. Exploring how the arts have affected and contributed to creations in artificial intelligence so far, will help us to understand and predict how it will hinder or benefit the creativity and reality of the arts, as ...
