Pop Culture: Music Analysis

Music is a media that can be interpreted into multiple different ways as well as expressed in numerous ways. My family members each have unique backgrounds and music history that all differ from each other. They were each raised in a different time and environments that would create a different introduction to music as well as what type of music that interests them.
Every culture has its own influences, unique environment and more specifically, taste and creation in music. For one, my mother grew up in Sinaloa, Mexico in the 1960s and 70s. She began to tell me what type of music she was raised to. I grew up listening to Banda and Conjuntos mainly because of my family and the small town I grew up in. He started off by mentioning current music during the 1990s. As a kid, I grew up listening to popular songs that were coming out in the 90s. I remember having a few CD’s from the Back Street Boys. I am not proud to say that I listened to them when I was growing up but back then, who didn’t listen to that boy band. Also, every now and then I hear “All Around The World,” by ATC and this song always brings me back to when I was younger. It would be playing all the time and as soon as the song came up, my friends and I knew what song it was. As I grew up and got into high school, my best friend at the time, Robert, introduced me to heavy metal and hardcore bands. My favorite metal bands were Korn and Slipknot. During that time, the majority of my room was filled with posters of these bands. You probably could not see my white walls because all the posters I had at the time. Once I got into these bands, I started to dress differently as well as pick up the guitar and eventually bass. My wardrobe was primarily black clothes back then too. I believe that listening to heavy metal and hardcore influenced me to begin to learn these instruments since the genre has heavy guitar playing as well as why I dressed in black. I also thought guitar riffs were amazing and is what partially attracted me to playing the guitar. I remember that this type of music put things into perspective for me at the time. Some themes or lyrics responded to me and made sense of some factors of life and situations I was going through. I also used heavy metal as a motivation factor when I competed in competitive sports. Before a match for wrestling or a swim meet, I would tune out my surrounding and listens to these bands. I think this routine I had before competing somewhat boosted my confidence and made me perform better. Therefore, this genre of music had a significant effect in my life during high school.
