Over the past few weeks or so I’ve been looking more and more into what it actually means to be a cadet. If you’re accepted to be a cadet you get put through both physical and mental training programs which introduce you to the fundamentals of the law enforcement. After those training sessions are completed most of the cadets are sent out to voluntarily patrol at events and/or become support services to the law enforcement.
The most important question here is; why do I want to be a police cadet? I have many reasons for wanting to become a cadet. First of all, I believe that being a cadet would be a great experience. The reason that I think this is because by becoming a cadet I would get a look at what the Salem law enforcement does on a daily
basis, also it’d help me figure out if I’d want to pursue law enforcement as a career. Another thing I would like to point out is that I don’t want to be a cadet just to benefit myself. I also love reaching out and giving back to the community. I find doing this enjoyable because I love to see the smiles on peoples faces, and getting to meet new people each and everyday. Yeah, I know that being a cadet isn’t just all fun and games. I know that it has to be taken seriously and that there is no goofing off. If I get accepted to be a cadet, I will give it my full attention and commit myself towards it.

As our modern-day society is becoming increasingly complex with many things changing so to must the education and training requirements for police officers in Canada. What all must police officers in Canada change to become efficient in our modern society? Canada has recently seen a surge in immigration to our country which has only added to the diversity of this nation. This means that the police must make sure they are properly trained and aware of our diverse cultures to properly handle all of the people in our society. Frequently police officers have come under scrutiny for the way they handle people with mental health issues. This just goes to show that police in Canada must increase their training on how to handle this group
When choosing an occupation, one has hundreds of different opportunities that are available. Throughout childhood, every person has had some form of a dream job they wanted to reach. Some people wanted to be astronauts, others firefighters, and yet some wanted to be police officers. The lifestyle that is portrayed of a police officer on the television looks glamourous and action packed, with high speed chases all the time and frequent doughnut stops. But this is not necessarily the reality of the situation.
The agency that I am interning with this semester is the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO). “The Mission of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is to serve, protect, and defend the community while preserving the rights and dignity of all.” The nature of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department is to assist and defend within the limitations of Hillsborough County and confirm the security and order of everyone and everything within it. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department is a well-organized program that guarantees that it’s employees are provided with the appropriate training and safety guidelines.
The career of a correctional officer has always captivated me in a way that is difficult to explain. Even as a child, I recall tuning into shows such as Lockup and Lockdown. In fact, my earliest, most vivid memories consist of me sitting in front of a TV screen with my eyes mesmerized by the hardened criminals visioned on the screen before me. It may seem peculiar, but I’ve always pictured myself inside the prison walls. What’s even more peculiar is that I’ve seldom visioned myself as a correctional officer; in fact, I’ve almost always visioned myself as a prisoner. Given what’s been said, one may ask me why it is that I aspire to be a correctional officer. And the answer to that question is rather simple. I want to be a correctional officer because I thrive for a rush of euphoria to course through my veins. And being a correctional officer will allow an endless supply of euphoria to course through my veins. And with that said, I don’t need to further explain why such a career is what I long for.
My interest in law enforcement grew in me at a young age probably around the age of 8. I would always watch the show Cops and that got me really interested. It was not until the age of 10 that I said to myself that I wanted to be a police officer or something in that field. During my years in junior high one of the officers who worked there told me about a program called police explorers, once he explained the program to me I knew that that was what I wanted to do: police work. A week after I turned fourteen I decided to join the Costa Mesa Police explorer program, in order to get I accepted to the program I had to attend four consecutive meetings and on my fourth meeting I was given an application the following week I was interviewed by four police officer; it was scary. This program has taught me many lessons such as responsibility, respect, integrity and many other qualities that one must have to be considered eligible for police work.
I believe the chain of command is important in a police agency for many reasons. It is a roadmap that shows the route within the organization that order would flow coming down through the organization or that requests flow going up the organization, like a two-way street. The chain of command also establishes formal lines of communication within the department for organizational purposes and it must be used by everyone to communicate formally. This will eliminate crucial departmental problems. For example, if the chief administrative level does not follow the chain of command downward and gives an order directly to the patrol officer, this could cause confusion. For example, the supervisory level might feel that it is alright to do the same thing sending information up the chain. The reasons I wish to join the Cranston Police Explorers Program is because of the interest i have in learning to become a leader, and how to handle myself and others during tough situations. I feel that it is crucial to have a basic understanding of self control, obedience, and to feel part of a program in which other individuals learn to work together to find the solution of a problem. Staying physically fit is another reason why I would like to join the Cranston Police Explorers Program. By committing to this program it will help me stay on track with having a happier, healthier lifestyle. Throughout the later years of my life i have thought deeply of the career path I would like to pursue, which is to be a police officer in the k9 division
Police officers have a stressful job that requires quick decisions making with good judgment. Duties of a police officer involve writing reports and maintaining order in criminal situations, it’s all judged with critical thinking. Due to all the different duties that are required from a police officer they are required to have certain traits such as a good physical agility, ability to cope with difficult situations, well writing skills, as communication skills, and have the ability to have exert and respect commands of authority. Each department will recruit officers in a different way, but they will have some standards for recruitment techniques. These requirement will vary from minimum requirements, education, technology, legal knowledge, residency, and diversity. (Ch.14 Pg.349)
Young people and the police have, for many years, experienced a tense and confrontational relationship (Borgquist & Johnson et al., 1995). This has led to a great wealth of literature based upon the notion of police-youth interaction. Much of this literature has tended to focus upon juvenile criminality and the reasons why young people commit such seemingly high levels of crime. Whilst the relationship between young people and the police force has been widely theorised and explained, there is very little literature on juvenile attiudes towards the police. Research that concerns societies attitudes towards the police force tends to focus upon the views and opinions of adults (Hurst and Frank, 2000). In this first section of my literature review I am going to focus upon work that allows us to gain a deeper understanding of why young people are so important when looking at crime. This section will allow us to comprehend the ways in which, literature suggests, young people view the police. This knowledge will provide a basis for my research in which I look more specifically at youth attitudes towards PCSO’s.

Police psychology is broadly defined as the application of psychological principles and methods to law enforcement. With the popularity of television shows like Criminal Minds and Law & Order: SVU, the job of a police psychologist has become more well known and even popular. As seen on these shows, a police psychologist can be helpful in profiling a criminal, but they also provide many other services to the members of a police department. Although the development of this field has a long history, police psychology as a separate entity is still relatively recent and growing. This intimate relationship between psychology and law enforcement can be traced back to almost a century ago.[1] It first developed out of a need for a variety of psychological services in the law enforcement field, including screening applicants and counseling during grief and stress situations. In the time that it has been around, it has proved to be a valuable resource for the law enforcement profession.
Today 's police officer in the United States has evolved in many ways from when the first police department, the Philadelphia Police Department, formed in 1751. Police officers now go through extensive training, are better educated, physically fit, and have access to vast technologies in the fight against crime. Yet even with these additional attributes, the primary role of the police officer has remained the same, to serve and protect. The people who take up this profession do it knowing that it will involve working in high stress environments, rotating work shifts, long periods way from family and friends, and instances of life and death. These officers dedicate themselves to helping others and work to make their community a safer place. It 's a profession that requires ethics, honor, integrity, and professionalism if you wish to succeed as a police officer.
On Tuesday, September 23rd, I had the opportunity to do a ride along with the Takoma Park police department. My ride along was quite interesting. I rode with Officer Carl, a twenty-six-year-old officer who has been with the police department for six months. During the ride along we engaged in so many conversations concerning his work routine, and some the important things to be aware of as a police officer. Officer Carl and I were about the same age group so I felt much comfortable talking to him. Before I went for the ride along I had a different perspective about police work, I thought police work was much amusing and entertaining, but after the ride along with Officer Carl, I have realized that there is much more to police work and it often
This course has helped me in many ways, especially time management, health, and money. Instead of having a very relaxing week and then panicking at the end of the week when everything is due, this course has helped me to plan out my studies. Planning them out helps me produce higher quality work and assists me with my stress problem. One thing that has helped a lot is getting short easy assignments or parts of assignments done in short periods of extra time I have. For example, instead of turning on that TV, wait ten minutes and knock out an assignment. Another asset for myself has been setting dates to have assignments done. Although these assignments may not be due on that day, getting them done and out of the way, makes more time for other
