A filter is a lens accessory. You add it over your lens’ end. You would use one for many reasons. With a lens filter you could correct the colors in a photo, protect your lens, change the contrast, reduce glare, polarize, and much more, depending on the type of filter. There are also color, macro and UV filters. For example, if you are taking a black and white photograph you can add a red filter to increase the contrast.
