The Modernist poets Walt Whiteman and Emily Dickinson rejected traditional poetic forms and conventional ways of thinking. The topics and structures of Emily Dickinson’s poetry, such as death, religion, isolation, and others, point to her lifelong struggle of maintaining individuality. In poem “#620”, the speaker expresses their frustration with the limitations of society. However, at the same time, Dickinson’s playful and sarcastic narration also appears here. In poem “#620” the speaker conveys their dislike for society through satire, and demonstrates the power of the individual versus the majority through the reader’s interpretation of the poem.
Determining who the speaker is is critical to illustrating the sarcastic tone of this poem. Within this poem there is strong evidence that the singular speaker is Emily Dickinson herself. One can easily read poem “#620” as a justification for Emily Dickinson’s self-isolation. The opening line: “Much Madness is divinest Sense –“ (1) sets the topic of the poem on madness, asks what “Madness” is, and demonstrates the divide that Dickinson feels exists between what society believes “Madness” to be and what “Madness” is to her. “Madness” and sanity are defined by lines six and seven: “Assent – and you are sane - / Demur – you’re straightway dangerous –“ (6-7). Meaning in summary that agreeing with the “Majority” (4) signifies to society that you are rational, while objecting to what the masses dictate causes them to label one as “dangerous”. ...interpretations of “handled with a Chain.” There are a multitude of understandings: imprisonment, a physical beating with a chain, or a reference to slavery. With these possibilities for the actual definition of this line, Dickinson shows that the consequences for not following the guidelines of the majority are severe, regardless of what crime you commit against society. But while the speaker definitively means there will be a punishment, the reader has a choice as to what the actual punishment is; ultimately the individual is able to decide their fate and not the majority. Dickinson’s sarcastic attitude towards the power of the majority is depicted in the facts she presents on the setting in which the poem takes place, a setting that seems overtaken by the majority but one that will ultimately favor the discerning individual.

Dickinson refers to “the Majority” as society, this Majority does not take women’s literature seriously. The vast majority of good literature is composed by men and it is extremely rare for a woman to create a masterpiece. Dickinson’s highly unusually writing style was her self-expression at its finest. Her use of capitalization and hyphens was deemed as unnecessary by many, but to her it was completely necessary to express her emphasis. The dash in Emily Dickinson’s poetry, initially edited away as a sign of incompletion, has since come to be seen as crucial to the impact of her poems. Critics have examined the dash from a myriad of angles, viewing it as a rhetorical notation for oral performance, a technique for recreating the rhythm of a telegraph, or a subtraction sign in an underlying mathematical system.1 However, attempting to define Dickinson’s intentions with the dash is clearly speculative given her varied dash-usage; in fact, one scholar illustrated the fallibility of one dash-interpretation by applying it to one of Dickinson’s handwritten cake recipes (Franklin 120). Instead, I begin with the assumption that “text” as an entity involving both the reading and writing of the material implies a reader’s attempt to recreate the act of writing as well as the writer’s attempt to guide the act of reading. I will focus on the former, given the difficulties surrounding the notion of authorial intention a.k.a. the Death of the Author. Using three familiar Dickinson poems—“The Brain—is wider than the Sky,” “The Soul selects her own Society,” and “This was a Poet—It is that,”—I contend that readers can penetrate the double mystery of Emily Dickinson’s reclusive life and lyrically dense poetry by enjoying a sense of intimacy not dependent upon the content of her poems. The source of this intimacy lies in her remarkable punctuation. Dickinson’s unconventionally-positioned dashes form disjunctures and connections in the reader’s understanding that create the impression of following Dickinson through the creative process towards intimacy with the poet herself.

Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830, in Amherst, Massachusetts, where she spent most of her life with her younger sister, older brother, semi-invalid mother, and domineering father in the house that her prominent family owned. As a child, she was curious and was considered a bright student and a voracious reader. She graduated from Amherst Academy in 1847, and attended a female seminary for a year, which she quitted as she considered that “’I [she] am [was] standing alone in rebellion [against becoming an ‘established Christian’].’” (Kort 1) and was homesick. One of Emily Dickinson’s greatest skills is taking the familiar and making it unfamiliar. In this sense, she reshapes how her readers view her subjects and the meaning that they have in the world. She also has the ability to assign a word to abstractness, making her poems seemingly vague and unclear on the surface. Her poems are so carefully crafted that each word can be dissected and the reader is able to uncover intense meanings and images. Often focusing on more gothic themes, Dickinson shows an appreciation for the natural world in a handful of poems. Although Dickinson’s poem #1489 seems disoriented, it produces a parallelism of experience between the speaker and the audience that encompasses the abstractness and unexpectedness of an event.
“Because I could not stop for death,” is a poem written by Emily Elizabeth Dickinson. Dickinson’s style of writing is very different from other poets. She writes down what comes to mind and doesn’t focus her attention on the grammatical errors she has in her poem. She writes in prose, uses many hyphens, and has unconventional punctuations. This, however, is what makes Emily stand out from other poets. Throughout the poem, Dickinson uses free verse, and doesn’t have a pattern of rhyme or meter and most of the lines begin with an unstressed syllable. The last line of each stanza is always short and to the point. Dickinson uses alliteration, as well as, imagery in her poem. Dickinson portrays that although death is a natural stage in one’s life, it is not the end of one’s journey, but a new beginning.
Emily Dickinson had an interesting life, and is a profound woman in the history of America and literature. Emily wrote many poems. Some are titled, and many are given chronological numbers instead of headlining the main theme. I am interpreting Poem #315.
The waxing and waning action of the text might symbolize the constant cycles of life. The fact that the text recedes then elongates in rhythm make the reader think the speaker of the poem is not sure what steps to take in their life. The speaker might not have convinced him or herself about the suicide attempt. Many suicidal thoughts are stopped short of action and then thought about later. Dickinson writes in this style to show the opposing forces of every situation. Suicide would likely be the most contemplated decision the narrator has ever had to make.
Emily Dickinson was one of the greatest woman poets. She left us with numerous works that show us her secluded world. Like other major artists of nineteenth-century American introspection such as Emerson, Thoreau, and Melville, Dickinson makes poetic use of her vacillations between doubt and faith. The style of her first efforts was fairly conventional, but after years of practice she began to give room for experiments. Often written in the meter of hymns, her poems dealt not only with issues of death, faith and immortality, but with nature, domesticity, and the power and limits of language.
In conclusion, it can be stated the examples of Emily Dickinson's work discussed in this essay show the poetess to be highly skilled in the use of humor and irony. The use of these two tools in her poems is to stress a point or idea the poetess is trying to express, rather than being an end in themselves. These two tools allow her to present serious critiques of her society and the place she feels she has been allocated into by masking her concerns in a light-hearted, irreverent tone.

The average reader cannot help but be affected by Dickinson’s style. The capitalized words draw the reader’s attention. They highlight important key words of the poem. The dashes set apart specific words and phrases, forcing the reader to slow down while reading. The dashes compel the reader to contemplate and ponder over the lines. Thus, whether or not Dickinson had a conscious purpose in her unconventional capitalization and punctuation, they have an undeniable effect on the rhythm of the poem and the perception of the reader.
Dickinson’s poem lives on complex ideas that are evoked through symbols, which carry her readers through her poem. Besides the literal significance of –the “School,” “Gazing Grain,” “Setting Sun,” and the “Ring” –much is gathered to complete the poem’s central idea. Dickinson brought to light the mysteriousness of the life cycle. The cycle of one’s life, as symbolized by Dickinson, has three stages and then a final stage of eternity. “Schools, where children strove” (9) may represent childhood; “Fields of Gazing Grain” (11), maturity; and “Setting Sun” (12) old age. In addition to these three stages, the final stage of eternity was symbolized in the last two lines of the poem, the “Horses Heads” (23), leading “towards Eternity” (24). Dickinson thought about the life cycle in terms of figurative symbols.
I decided gratitude would be my highest terminal value. If I can strive to be grateful for all that I have and all that I am, I believe this would lead to helping me achieve all other terminal values. Providing service for other living things is something that I feel is important for the survival of our external world, which is why it is ranked second. My third value is wisdom. In today’s world, there are so many problems that I will not be able to resolve or fix, that I have to have the wisdom to be able to know what I can and can not do, and know that this is okay. I also believe it is of great value to strive for wisdom when I interact with people. Rather than reacting with feelings and passion, responding with wisdom could achieve a lot more from others, and ultimately allow me to achieve my goals. I did not rank happiness any higher because although I believe it to be of vital importance to our lives, I believe that if you do not strive for other key values, then striving for happiness has the potential to become a selfish or destructive act.
Throughout Emily Dickinson’s poetry there is a reoccurring theme of death and immortality. The theme of death is further separated into two major categories including the curiosity Dickinson held of the process of dying and the feelings accompanied with it and the reaction to the death of a loved one. Two of Dickinson’s many poems that contain a theme of death include: “Because I Could Not Stop For Death,” and “After great pain, a formal feeling comes.”
Dickinson didn’t always wish to be an unpublished and unknown writer and at one point “began her career with a normal appetite for recognition.” (Wilbur) It is seen in her poem “Success is counted sweetest (112)” how she seems to praise an unknown success. Dickinson’s poems were numbers by when they were believed to have been written and as this was almost 150 poems before “I’m Nobody! Who are you?” it can be assumed it was during the time of her still wishing to be published. The third and fourth line in the poem state “To comprehend a nectar/ Requires sorest need” (3,4) in which the narrator is calling to attention that to truly enjoy the feeling of success you must truly want it to the point that you are suffering or feel like you would die without it. It contrasts greatly with her poem “260” where she believes it “dreary – to be- somebody” (5) and doesn’t wish to advertise herself at all or have success.
