The article, written by Kimberly Tohill, discusses about the rise in popularity of podcasts and how they could be implicated in the classrooms to help students in the process of learning another language. Tohill talks about how learning a new language as people getting older becomes harder than when they were children. The reason being children are more exposed to the language while growing up through parents whose native language was not English. For students who attempt to learn another language as adolescents or older, one of their exposures to learning is through the classroom environment. However, Tohill, states that the time in the classroom is not enough to immerse the student in the learning experience. A solution to help students …show more content…
Tohill has many reasons why podcasts can be helpful. One of the reasons is students are able to listen to the podcasts at their own pace. The student can start a podcast, take a break, and finish the podcast whenever they have a chance. The student is not limited to having a particular set time to listen. It is up to the student to choose when it is the best time to listen. Another reason why Tohill supports podcasts is because of the variety of content available. Students trying to learn another language are able to hear different dialects or accents of a language and hear a variety of topics of the language. Lastly, the most important reason why podcasts can be a great learning is that it creates additional content outside of the classroom. By supplementing through podcasts, it gives the student more opportunities to learn. The students will have more opportunities to be exposed to the …show more content…
I am a subscriber to a good amount of podcasts and it is definitely a great way to gain information. Tohill makes great points why podcasts can be successful in helping learning languages. Podcasts these days do not to have to be downloaded and transferred to a mp3 player. People can go to the podcast’s website and stream the audio or they can even download a podcast application on their and listen. It is very convenient to listen to the podcast at work, in the car, and even, while running everyday errands. I have no issues with Tohill writes in her article and agree with many of the things she has said. Podcasts are a great way to expose students to additional material that might have been missed in the classroom or for learners who want to learn for the sake of learning. They provide an ease of accessibility and convenience. Even though podcasts are considered popular, I do not think there are not enough people listening to them. People have heard of podcasts, but not many people listen to them because they believe podcasters just ramble on about random stuff. If people realize the positives of podcasts and relate it to learning, then I believe that podcasts be introduced by many teachers to their
I really enjoyed this video. It's crazy the amount of informaton that gets packed into a three minute video. I think the cartoon and music that accompanies it helps because you're being entertained as well as informed. I think it's easier for me to remember a fun fact from the video versus reading a whole chapter from a book.
Overall I enjoyed listening to this podcast because I really liked how the speakers cooperated with one another, allowing each person to participate as it was entertaining. Not only this, I found the examples and stories shared in this podcast very relevant to understanding natural selection in depth. Lastly, one of the creative aspects of this podcast was the music, which was a great component in this podcast because music tends to draws people attention easily.
However, there are some things that I find more important than other parts. For example, I find it useful that this video emphasizes that deaf people want to make themselves understood. It it also useful that the video corrects common myths about being deaf. For instance, the video states having a deaf child is not a tragedy, deaf people are normal, and that deafness shouldn't be seen as a handicap. It is also useful that the video details that there are thirty-five million people who are to some degree hard of hearing and out of that population three-hundred thousand are deaf. All in all the video is useful because it paints deaf people and deaf culture and deaf people accurately and in a good
Loh explains that not every college professor is properly taught how to give a lecture, making it difficult for students to get the correct education from a professor who isn’t trained to explain the material. Various colleges and universities are starting to stray away from the traditional lecture and begin a more hands on approach to teaching a college course, while professors are looking to get rid of the college lecture completely. A research study showed classes that had an interactive approach as opposed to the traditional style resulted in better academic grades and a “36 percent drop in class failures.” Many educators prefer

This activity suits the child’s current stage of oral development will interest them and aid in them progressing in their oral development. Children at this stage of development enjoy listening to stories which is good not only for their receptive skills, but also for their expressive language (Fellows and Oakley, 2014), in all four key components of spoken language. It helps with phonemes by getting the child to focus on the phonological patterns throughout the text (Fellows and Oakley, 214). Syntax knowledge allows them to observe the sentence structure and grammar in the book which allows them to develop a stronger awareness of the syntax. Visual aids in storybooks can aid in the child in the understanding of semantics (Fellows and Oakley’s), as the story is read aloud their receptive skills hear those more difficult words, when paired with a visual cue such as a picture in the book the child understands better and thus they are able to gain a better understanding of how to speak these difficult words. A better understanding of pragmatics can also be gained from storybooks as they understand how people communicate in society such as greetings and asking for things (Fellows and Oakley,

Reading and listening to podcasts on topics that interest me are activities that I can engage in which will benefit me intellectually.
Krashen’s Hypotheses of Second Language Acquisition. For decades, foreign language teachers have wandered into a scientific abyss. Until 1983, there had been little real research dealing with the ways in which someone acquires a second language. Teachers mostly used the audiolingual classroom model that had been in place for the past twenty years (or, even worse, the literally ancient grammatical translation model that had been used by civilizations millennia old).
Reading to children can teach them skills they’ll need throughout their entire life. Reading aloud not only enhances their skills, it also affects how the their school life is. Being read to regularly is important to maintain the skills that the child learns, the earlier a child is being read to, the more skills they acquire. Parents will benefit from reading also, it creates a bond with their child that last a lifetime. Reading aloud will introduce children to books and reading so they can eventually do it on their own. Reading to children can improve many aspects of their life.

It is necessary to draw a distinction between foreign language and second language learning. According to (Wisniewski, 2007), a language lear...
Language learning is no longer limited in the certain classroom. Students could learn the language at any time and any places. For instance, students can memorize vocabulary when they are waiting for the bus to come, they can finish their online homework before their practice begins, and they can also review what they learn today before going to sleep just simply by taking out their phones. Mobile assisted language learning enables students to save “the time fragment” to learn a foreign language, instead of only learning in the classroom during a certain time of the day. Moreover, by using mobile assisted language learning, speaking, listening become more accessible to students. In a traditional classroom, language learning focuses more on vocabulary and grammar, which means students can practice reading and writing a lot, but they do not proactive enough listening and speaking. However, in the real world, speaking and listening are much more important than reading and writing, because people need to use language to communicate with each other. With mobile assisted language learning, it would be easy to practice speaking and listening even if there is no teacher around. Since the majority of mobile devices are internet based, there are plenty of listening and speaking resources online to help students experience the authentic language environment. Those could include news radio, movies, music, chatting room, and language education websites. Mobile devices provide students with a more interactive environment to practice their language skills. However, in traditional foreign language class, the teacher cannot make sure they help every student to learn speaking and listening, since those skills require individual communication, and it is almost impossible for teachers to actually talk to every student on by on all the
Learning another language provides high rewards including “improved cultural understandings, communication abilities and job prospects.” (Preston and Seedhouse, 2013) Because of the rapid development of technology, applying an array of media is being presented to students in different parts of the world in an effort to achieve different purposes such as educational needs.
