Echoes of Inequality: Liberty and Justice in American History I do not stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. This is a right, shown by the West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette decision that students have the right to refuse to stand and say the Pledge of Allegiance ("West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette"). This 1943 case remains relevant to students today, who do not stand for one reason: they will not pledge themselves to a flag and a country that claims liberty and justice for all but fails to come through. It is clear that America has not achieved and does not achieve its promises of freedom for all, as demonstrated by numerous historical continuities. history, many believe justice has been present for some time. They reference examples of how hard work led to great reward with a “rags to riches” view. Andrew Carnegie, for instance, exemplifies this as an immigrant turned millionaire through the steel industry (“Andrew Carnegie”). While rare examples such as Carnegie do exist, they are more common in fiction than in reality. “Rags to riches” stories are increasingly rare in the present - the wealthy population is born into privilege, with figures such as Donald Trump receiving a "small loan" of a million dollars (Diamond). Others highlight the Fourteenth Amendment, adopted in 1868, addressing citizenship and equal protection under the law (“14th Amendment”). However, the amendment did not manage to shoot down the "separate but equal" decision in Plessy v. Ferguson used to justify segregation (“Plessy v. Ferguson”). The amendment has failed in modern day cases as well. In State of Missouri v. Darren Wilson, Robert McCulloch summoned a grand jury to make a hasty decision off of little information concerning the controversial death of Michael Brown. This prevented a fair trial for the Brown family and protestors who perceived the killing as racially charged (Reyes). Examples such as these show the words "all men are created equal" ring hollow under scrutiny. Racial issues have brought up the hypocrisy of “liberty and justice” in the United States for decades and continue to do so to this day. In Beloved, a 1987 novel by Toni Morrison, former slaves Sethe and Paul D reveal heavy psychological and physical damage. The horrific narrative of a woman killing her own child rather than letting them return to slavery is based off a slave named Margaret Garner’s actions, reminding everyone that the mere existence of slavery shows faults in America’s history (Nichols). But discrimination against African-Americans has lingered long after the abolishment of slavery. Today, there is a resurgence of unrest against racial discrimination in the form of the Black Lives Matter movement, provoked by police attacks on unarmed black Americans. Black Lives Matter has named itself as a movement focused around revitalization of black liberation (“About Black Lives Matter”). Whether from the institution of slavery or the institution of discrimination, African-Americans have been forced to fight for their liberty. Additionally, throughout history, power has rested in the hands of men while women are subjected to substandard roles and expectations.
For instance, women were not afforded the right to vote until 1920 with the 19th Amendment – over 150 years since the creation of the United States ("19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution"). The women’s rights movement began with the country’s inception, but suppressive gender roles confined women in the home as wives and mothers. In spite of numerous developments over time, as a woman today, I have a fear of rape that hangs over me as I anticipate entering college. I am not alone in this fear, knowing that one in five women will be sexually assaulted while in college (The Hunting Ground). The problems caused by sexual assault are violations of Title IX, as the lack of safety inhibits a woman’s participation in her education (“Title IX and Sex Discrimination”). justice. Xenophobia, like racism and sexism, manifests itself in mobs proclaiming “pro-American” sentiment and threatens the livelihood of Americans who do not fit into this narrow view. Nativist groups fought immigration and integration throughout history, but the Ku Klux Klan was the most infamous and destructive. The burning cross was a display of terror, warning anyone who was not white, Protestant, and otherwise “American” that they do not belong. Today this sentiment lurks in the depths of the Internet. While watching a video on YouTube, I often find myself scrolling down into the comments section. What I have discovered ranges from pesky to sickening, with comments claiming African-Americans should still be slaves, Jewish citizens should be eradicated, and more discriminatory slurs than I can count. A country containing such high concentrations of hatred cannot be one presenting the ideal of freedom. When I first refused to stand for the flag, I shocked myself – why would I do something that could only lead to uncomfortable questioning from confused teachers?
What good could come from refusing to say a pledge? But looking back on these examples of America’s cycles of injustice, I feel validated in my decision. All acts and bills attempting to remedy these issues have failed. America is not a place of freedom for many of its citizens. If other students realize their rights and recognize there is not liberty and justice for all in this country, there will be a revolution. There will be a revolution of youth refusing to stand for such
inequality.
With one in five college students experiencing sexual assault during their college career who wouldn’t be afraid? This remains especially true for young women between the ages of 18-24 (“The Realities of Sexual Assault”). While a woman’s freshman and sophomore year of college are when she is at a most risk for assault, it can happen at any time. According to Robin Gray in the article on sexual assault statistics, “between 20% and 25% of women will experience a completed and/or attempted rape during their college career,” (Gray). At Northwest Missouri State University for the 2016-2017 academic year there are 5,618 undergraduate students enrolled. With the ratio of male to female students being 44% to 56%, there are about 3,147 female students. In terms of the statistics estimated by Gray, 630-787 of the female student population at Northwest Missouri State will experience rape during their college career (“Northwest Missouri State University”). This is a disturbingly large figure. Women are not the only ones susceptible to these acts, but men are too. It is said about “10%” of all sexual assault cases involve male victims (“The Realities of Sexual Assault”). While this number is slightly lower for men it is often believed that male victims of sexual assault do not often report their crime due to the social stigma surrounding their assault. Men may feel
Every morning over 75 million students around the nation recite the Pledge of Allegiance verbatim (Digest of Education Statistics). If one walks up to one of these students and asks them about the meaning and the origin of this pledge, what would they say? Nothing. However, even though more than a million students recite these words every day, not more than half probably know the true meaning behind these words. One cannot deny the fact that most of these children just want to get this pledge “over with” to continue talking to their peers. The Pledge of Allegiance has gone through several changes since Francis Bellamy, a Baptist minister, wrote it in 1892. The pledge acts as a source of patriotism, national pride and controversy. The statement, “under God” has caused much controversy and has created a distinct line between the supporters and non supporters of the pledge. America, which famously provides one with true equality, ironically has a pledge that goes against its doctrine and foundations. The changes that occur throughout the years to the pledge that results in its undeniable controversy and losing value. The adjustments lead to the pledge’s undeniable ambiguity and the nation should revert to its previous 1924 pledge.
The fight for women’s rights began long before the Civil War, but the most prominent issue began after the fourteenth and fifteenth amendments joined the Constitution. The rights to all “citizens” of the United States identified all true “citizens” as men and therefore incited a revolution in civil rights for women (“The Fight for Women’s Suffrage”). Throughout history, Americans have fought for the rights of freedom in their country, freedoms that have been passed down through dozens of generations. Freedom’s such as religion, speech, the press, slavery and the right to vote. Americans, though very aware of their freedoms, often take them for granted and forget the struggles that their ancestors went through to obtain them. One example of this struggle is a woman’s right to be treated and looked upon by the government as equal. This was not an easy battle to win, and it took a strong few to begin to bring the struggle that women had faced for centuries to an end.
The Pledge of Allegiance has become a major issue for students, teachers, parents and lawmakers. The original intention of the pledge was not to stir up trouble, but for a celebration of Christopher Columbus discovery of the new world. The pledge is no longer thought of as a celebration, but an infringement on children's religious beliefs. Do you believe that children's rights are being infringed on? Some people believe that the pledge is a great honor for our country. It has shown, and provided us with great pride just like our American flag. The Pledge of Allegiance being recited in the public school system does not infringe on the students religious beliefs, but is a way for us to honor our country and everything that we have done to get to this point in history.
I’ve lol been standing for the pledge of allegiance since I was in elementary and never really understood why. Freedom of speech, you say what you want, when you want, and how you want to. It’s your right to stand up or not. “People die for our country.” “Sign of respect for the country we live in.” “Take pride in being an American.” How can we be proud to be American if it only brings negative stereotypes to everyone’s head, it has never been what it preaches to be. Being American is actually embarrassing. Just because I was born here doesn 't mean I have undying loyalty to America, being American means nothing to me, to be truthful.
“Women and men do not receive an equal education because outside of the classroom women are perceived not as sovereign beings but as prey” (Rich 446). Women already have this preconceived notion that they not only have to compete with men in school but the pressure that society puts on them to compete with other women every day. The body shaming epidemic going on now tells women that if they don’t have the right measurement then you are not considered attractive, it is another example of how women are viewed as a whole instead of as individuals. Adrienne Rich also discusses the obstacle that women face every day, but no one wants to talk about, rape. “How much of my working energy is drained by the subliminal knowledge that as a woman, I test my physical right to exist each time I go out alone?” What Rich is expressing is that women always have the unnecessary burden, of not only being considered the weaker sex in society but also physically being reminded that as women doing something as mundane as walking to your car you have to be conscious of the possibility of being raped. This is affecting women outside of the classroom setting, if women were represented more in mainstream curriculum there would not be such a conception about gender

In conclusion, women throughout the decades have strived, from protesting to going on trials, to pointing out their rights. “Will women soon be treated equally as men?” A day when women and men having the same rights is still under way and has a far way to go as of the antebellum period. However, what makes women so unique, especially during this era, is the numerous of contributions these respectful women played a part in in order to see dramatic changes in America’s society.
Although the custom had fallen off prior to 9/11, a great many American public schools begin the school day by reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. The recitation of a promise to support the flag and the country it represents constitutes an oath that is said by almost every student and teacher daily. We are concerned that the recitation of the pledge has gone unexamined by both teacher and student. While it may be acceptable for religious institutions to demand oath without analysis, public schools should be and are held to a different standard. Fostering the critical analysis of the documents that have supported our country is part of the rights and responsibilities of the American school system and those whom it employs.
In the survey that was given to students in an English classroom at Riverside Community College on November 19th, 50% of students agreed that children should recite the Pledge of Allegiance while 4% of students disagree. On the other hand, 36% either have mixed views or do not mind either way. Some of the viewpoints of students differ such as the 42% who say they want to follow the traditions that they had for years while 23% do not think it matters, or they do not know enough information about it. A staggering 8% say it goes against their religious beliefs or they find it unconstitutional. The remaining 27% chose the option other such as, saying it is a good way to teach children to respect their country and goes with their religious views, or they do not want others to be ostracized because of their religious beliefs (Survey).
Many students all across America stand and salute to the flag every morning and repeat these words, “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, To the republic for which it stands, one nation, Under God, Indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” There are controversy behind these words of historical allegiance, and that is why many people are refusing to stand for the pledge. In conclusion, advocates for mandating the Pledge of Allegiance in schools justify their beliefs claiming that the Pledge has pedagogical value. These supporters seek to use it as a tool to share themes of community, loyalty, and respect in the midst of social diversity and change. Opponents on the other hand, disagree that the Pledge has any educational value and instead believe that it violates a person’s First Amendment rights. They ultimately seek to demonstrate that the Pledge is ineffective in transmitting values in public school.
First, I would like to talk about the history of the Pledge of Allegiance. Many people today recite the Pledge of Allegiance but do not know the history that took place behind it. The Pledge of Allegiance was originally written more than a century ago. When the Equal Rights Amendment was first introduced, in 1923, it was just a few years after the 19th amendment had been passed. It continued to be reintroduced every year for the next 48 years without any success. The ERA had no major union backing it until the 1970’s, it lacked the support of the President’s Commission on the Status of Women, and even the National Organization for Women did not endorse the ERA at its founding.
