Dan was no coward, thank you very much. He was many things, but coward was not one of them. Moreover he didn’t shy away from anything that others would cringe at. There is nothing to fear other than fear itself, and Dan had no reason to be terrified. “ I am not a coward,” Dan mumbled to himself. “ I never back down from a challenge.” Especially not when that challenge was the result of his own stupid idea. The challenge was called ‘Hide-and-Seek Alone’. A supposed Japanese urban legend ritual that is meant to summon a ghost or other spirit into ones home. wherever its origin began many will agree that it is advised not to play it as it is extremely dangerous and could possibly bring death. It was 11:50 at night when Dan saw a link on how to carry out this game. It was a game of bravery that begins at midnight and ends at three thirty-three in the morning, the time… it leaves. “A possessed doll can’t kill me... right?” he muttered as scrolled down the site. He dared to look at the responses to spoil the surprise so he did not… something he’d later regret. “There’s no such things as spirits,” Dan muttered to himself, “and even if they were real what could they do to me. They couldn't hurt me.” It took Dan an hour to prepare all the things needed. A jagged looking doll with rice replacing the cotton stuffing with a red thread wrapped around to to symbolize blood. “This is one ugly doll,” tossing the doll from one hand to the other, “lets call it Minikui.” He had forgotten that the site clearly had stated that naming a spirit only made more powerful. “WHERE IS MY KNIFE!” franticly throwing his stuff everywhere. He soon found it on the table which was never there to begin with. Once everything was set up and he found a place... ... middle of paper ... ...h of this and got out of the closest. The doll wasn’t there. Frantically searched the house and stopped in front of the bathroom. He opened the door nervously and turned on the bathroom light, and the doll was on the floor with the knife. Before Dan could pour the salt water onto the doll, Minikui stabbed him. “Silly mortal did you really thing you could win against me, a spirt?” pushing the knife deeper into Dan’s heart, “now hurry up and die so i can live in it already.” Dan could not believe what he was seeing and was slowly losing conscious. “NO!” Dan woke up panting heavily. ‘Maybe being a coward wasn’t as bad as it sounded like’ Dan thought to himself. Not knowing that it actually happened and the spirit was watching him through his window smirking at him. “Five more minutes and your body is mine... forever” laughing menacingly at the poor clueless boy.

On his way back, Luke spotted the rowboat along with Sam Carter and his Uncle Henry out in the lake with Dan. A fierce rush of emotion filled Luke as both of the men dumped the dog in the lake. When he arrives at his home he notices a small rag doll on his doorstep. Confused, but intrigued he picks up the doll and carried it inside. He proceeded up his stairs to his computer work with the doll still in hand and placed it up against a lamp. After he sits down he studies the doll more carefully and notices a small folded note with a pin holding its place next to the small hand. The note is written in Viennese, not knowing the language since he was eight, he puts it down and examines the doll and sees two stitched crosses where the eyes should be, one for the nose, one over the heart, and five for the mouth. He leaves the room and when he enters the doll isn't where he left it and there is a message on his computer that had not been there before. It reads " the deadline is dawn ". Scared by the note he tries to find the doll. When he picks it up off the floor, he props the doll next to the lamp where it had been before.
Many things the soldiers do and look heroic are actually done because they’re too afraid to be judged by their friends. When Tim has to decide if he wants to go to the war or escape to Canada. The fact that people could think he’s a coward greatly influences his decisions. In the beginning, Tim thinks that a person shouldn’t use courage so there is enough saved up when it’s needed. In “On the Rainy River” he realizes that’s not true because even though he’s been saving up courage all his life, it’s not enough to make the decision he thinks is right. Throughout the book O’Brien, explains that courage has to be taught by life, it’s not something people either are or are not born with or something people can “save up”. He thinks that if ...
Corporal Keighran and the rest of the troops were on a hill on the outskirts of the town when they were ambushed. As the enemies kept firing at our troops, Dan took his own initiative by running up to the hill, exposing a full view of himself to the enemy to get a better view of their position. Realising that he’d gone too far, his thoughts inside were, “This is it. I’ve gone too far. I’m gonna die.” Even though he had negative thoughts, Corporal Keighran did not give up and still kept
