Pablo Picasso was a painter who spent the majority of his life in France. He also sculpted, made poetry, and made prints. Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain on October 25, 1881. He was the first child of Don José Ruiz y Blasco (his father), and María Picasso y López (his mother). He was originally born Catholic, but then became atheist. His first words were “piz, piz”, his attempt at saying “lapiz”, meaning pencil in Spanish.

He was an expert at creating art since he was 7 years old. He had formal artistic training from his father in figure drawing and oil painting. He decided to drop out shortly after being enrolled and spent his time studying artwork in places like museums, in cafés, on the streets, etc. Picasso made his 1st trip to Paris, the art capital of Europe back then, in 1900. While he was on his trip, he made a friend named Max Jacob, whom was a poet and journalist. Soon, they shared an apartment together. Picasso then lived in Madrid for the first 5 months in 1901. He and his friend Francisco de Asís Soler founded the magazine “Arte Joven”, meaning Young Art, which had 5 published issues. Picasso illustrated grim cartoons in the magazine, sympazing the poor.

The first period of Picasso’s works was called the Blue Period. These works are characterized by depressing paintings in only blue and green, with occasional warmer colors. He and an artist named Georges Braque developed cubism as a style of painting where objects were broken down and reassembled into abstract shapes. Most of Picasso’s Cubist works included bottles, guitars, and violins. Some of Picasso’s most famous Cubist works are the following: Girl with a Mandolin, Le Guitariste and L’homme aux cartes. Picasso left Olivier for Marcelle Humbert, Picasso called her Eva Gouel. Picasso included his love for Eva in his cubism works, however, Eva died prematurely from illness in 1915, devastating Picasso.

During World War I, Picasso lived in Avignon. Picasso continued painting uninterrupted, unlike his French comrades. His paintings became more depressing and his life changed. After the death of Eva Gouel, Picasso had an affair with Gaby Lespinasse. Towards the end of World War I, Picasso befriended more important people including Jean Cocteau, Jean Hugo, Juan Gris, and more. These people were associated with Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. In 1918, Picasso married a ballerina named Olga Khokhlova, who introduced him the 1920s high society lifestyle. They had a son named Paulo Picasso, who grew up to be a motorcycle
