In today’s world there are many Americans who are being neglected from health care that they need when they are recovering from an injury. At the same time there are many physical therapists that have to move across state lines for various reasons and are unable to support their families for weeks and even months at a time. “Why is this” one might ask. This is because in America right now each state has their own requirements that need to be met in order for a license to practice physical therapy to be issued. This means that in order for someone to practice in a different state they have to obtain another license which takes a long time. The way this will lower cost for patients is because this type of care will become more available making it so everyone can access it. When that happens the price will naturally drop because there will be less demand. States will save money because they won’t have to issue near as many tests, background checks, and whatever else the spend money on to issue licenses. Lastly, the federal government will save money because all the patients that are receiving money from the government won’t have to pay as much therefore the government will saves tons of money because of all the people it supports. Although many people say the compact will never pass because of how long it will get state legislators to approve it, when in reality the nursing field has been passing a compact of their own. While it has taken several years it is still getting passed and accepted by more and more states. The nursing compact has proven to have been very beneficial in allowing nurses to practice beyond state borders with little to no problems. So the argument that state legislature will take too long to pass the compact is unreasonable because states have already been through this situation, and have passed the similar compacts. This isn’t the only argument though. Although many people say they compact won’t work because there is “no set way to deal with licenses that violate restrictions” ,and “ How the disciplinary process would work” (Lane) the APTA (American Physical Therapy Association) and the FSBPT (Federation of States Boards of Physical Therapy) are working together to come up solutions and procedures in order to solve these problems. This is ok because the compact isn’t completed and is going through a revising process before it will be proposed before state legislatures. Bernard Roth has said, if you reframe the problem many solutions become apparent” (243), and that is exactly what the creators of the compact intended to do with these problems. All so
