Monika Maron’s use of photography in Pawels Briefe creates images and memories of the narrator’s family that a text alone could not. Pawels Briefe can be described as a ‘post-memorial narrative’, overcoming the distance of generations and past trauma to understand and identify with one’s ancestors. The way in which Maron uses photographs throughout the book illustrates her feelings towards different members of her family, which in turn reflects issues surrounding the political and historical context of Germany. This essay will examine the major roles which photography plays in Pawels Briefe, which include the narrator’s relationship with her grandfather and mother in particular, and the way Maron wishes the images to come across. It will also look at how the photographs help Maron deal with her ties to the GDR and communism, and the ways in which photography is intrinsically linked to history and memory. The photographs in Pawels Briefe serve to further the narrator’s identification with members of her family who had great influence over her. A very important figure is that of Pawel himself; it is made clear through the images used and the imagined encounters with her “dreamy” grandfather that Maron reveres the image she has of him. On page nine of Pawels Briefe, for example, the narrator asserts that she will acknowledge Pawel alone as her ancestor. The narrator at once identifies with Pawel and asserts his identity and individuality, by focussing in on him in a lot of the photos she includes. By failing to include her stepfather and her biological father in her selection of photographs in the book, the narrator insinuates that Pawel is the influential father figure in her life. This can be seen as the narrator accomplish... ... middle of paper ... ...s the language her family would have spoken and their personalities. On viewing a photograph, one deals with memories, but Holocaust photographs “carry an emotional weight that is often difficult to sustain” (Hirsch); the magnitude of the emotions associated with these photos give Pawels Briefe an importance and a depth which has a profound effect on the narrator and the viewer. In conclusion, the book Pawels Briefe utilises photography to create an image of a family torn apart by the Holocaust, offering us a glimpse into their personalities and the opinions of the narrator. Photographs are used to reflect the wider social issues of the time and to raise important questions about coping with the past. The images in the book create a dialogue between the narrator and her deceased relatives, and connect the reader to the narrator’s experiences and memories.
