The University of Nebraska-Lincoln recently finds the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity at fault for committing indecent behaviors during the January 21 Women’s March in Lincoln.
According to witnesses, the Phi Gamma Delta frat shouted sexually harassing comments at the participants of the Women’s March. But PGD denies the allegations and points out that the internal investigation lead by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln officials have no proof.
While the investigation is on-going, the fraternity is placed in temporary suspension. The investigation is known as FIJI, as reported by the Lincoln Journal Star. The investigation cites that the frat group has a pattern of behavior that violates the university’s Student Code of Conduct. Violations listed under the fraternity include reckless alcohol use by the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity members.

While reading Pledged: The Secret Life of Sororities, I learned more about the inner workings of Greek Life. I learned that the odds of me finding a sorority are so slim due to my independent and different personality. While I am not good at sticking up for myself, something this book has made me feel is crucial to blend in and conform to an ideal to fit into a sorority, I am too opinionated. There are not many sororities (at least shown in Pledged) that welcome girls who are different, preferring to stay similar. After the open invite events are over, it goes to invite only and that’s where the cuts are made. Every fraternity tries to choose the best people that fit the values that fraternity. It is amazing how an isolated incident, such as the one at Colorado, can incite such a large frenzy and call for change. The scandal started with a former recruit telling his experiences during his college visit in Boulder at the University of Colorado. His stories included wild parties with unlimited amounts of alcohol and the open availability to sex with the women of his choosing. The term used for these parties was "sex parties" and recruits were told that the women would perform any sexual act he desired. After the recruit made his experiences public, other stories began to surface from other recruits who had similar experiences at Colorado and other schools. The situation came to a boil when a former female player accused some of her team mates of sexual assault at one of these parties. Other students came forward with similar allegations of football players forcing sex from females at their parties. What started as small story ballooned into a very situation and it became very obvious that the recruiting game was out of control and in need of major change. After the stories surfaced out of Boulder, Colorado more stories began to surface around the country and even Brigham Young University kicked off four players for sexual misconduct.

Colleges should hold clubs such as fraternities and sports to the same level as others and be harshly punished for crimes they commit so they don't feel superior and think they can get away with rape. When the penalties are harsher and people are made an example of, then fraternities and sports in college will become safer environments.
Greek organizations are debatably the most undervalued and misconceived aspect of college campuses. Most people don’t see the benefits that fraternities and sororities bring to college campuses and their communities. Some see these organizations as large beneficial clubs and others see them as potential problems. Many of the allegations put forth by individuals that discredit the benefits and good deeds done by Greek organizations are weak justifications for their removal from college campuses. Greek organizations provide campus communities with academically responsible students, philanthropic activities and increase community involvement.
It brings me great displeasure to write this appeal due to the circumstances of my unwarranted suspension from a fraternity I hold dear to my heart. I became a member of the fall 2015 class falling in love with both my brothers and the fraternity. The past year I formed an unbreakable bond and accumulated numeral unforgettable experiences. I even got the pleasure to read The Phoenix and enjoy the beautiful and adventurous history of our fraternity. This all came to a shattering halt when the alumni of the ILBE Chapter persecuted for violating our Membership Agreement.
Why I desire to be an Alpha man? The answer to that question answered in its entirety would far exceed the three page limit allotted for this essay. In the Army we are taught to K.I.S.S things meaning, keep it simple. The mission statement of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is to develop leaders, promote brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities. This mission statement embodies the backbone principles of why I desire to be an Alpha man.
When I think of a Delta woman, I think of a compassionate, community-oriented, and diligent individual. During my childhood, I was not blessed with the opportunity of having a sister. Longing for that “sisterly bond” that Delta women acquire is what ignited my interest towards becoming a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated at a young age. As I got older and evolved more into my dream of being a Mortician, which happens to be in a male dominated field, I want nothing more than to be involved in an organization that uplifts women in a positive way, while dominating in their career choice. My career choice of owning a funeral business as an African American woman is one of the many great assets I have to offer to Delta Sigma Theta
What is unfair, is to say that there isn’t a problem. According to a study done by NASPA Journal, women in sororities are 74% more likely to experience sexual assault. But, this study doesn’t include women outside of sororities or men who have been assaulted, so I imagine that this percentage would much higher with their inclusion.
In "Fraternities and Collegiate Rape Culture" Ayres Boswell and Joan Z. Spade analyze the social perspective of the gendered relations in male fraternities that add to the high rate of violence against women on many college campuses. They list a host of factors that distinguish higher-risk from lower-risk atmospheres discussing the rates of rape in colleges and state how "1 out of 4 college women say they were raped or experienced an attempted rape" (217). Additionally, "1 out of 12 college men say they forced a woman to have sexual intercourse against her will" (Boswell, Spade 217). In other words Boswell and Spade indicated that the rates were high when it came down to women getting raped in colleges by men who also attended those colleges. In addition, Boswell and Spade specify in how most people are aware of rape but know very little about rape culture (Boswell, Spade 217).
Also, as a fraternity you're supposed to lead, and their actions were not reflected in that video.
Hazing is a symbol of this gang violence and needs to be stopped. Overall, the culture could be lessened by eliminating the normalization of hazing on college campuses across the country today (Hughey, 2008). Hazing in college fraternities removes people’s voices from the larger conversation in the world. Without their voices, the world could be missing out of a new idea, a new change. Helpless, innocent lives taken by a senseless act, hazing negates all purposes of Greek life, especially fraternities. By raising the laws against hazing, people will think more about their actions and positions regarding the topic. Overall, hazing awareness needs to increase as well as the laws against hazing legally to promote safety in fraternities and on college campuses in
