Singer’s Conception of Moral Obligation Singer’s argument and viewpoint in the Ethics of Assistance proposes the argument of moral obligation in which he states that, “Suffering and death from lack of food, shelter, and medical attention are very bad things, and if we can prevent very bad things from happening, without sacrificing something of comparable moral value, then we are morally required to do it”. He claims that the concept of moral obligation should be revised and that we are obligated to help others in need, sacrificing something with any moral value. Although there are a few objections and exceptions to his argument, Peter Singer’s viewpoint on moral obligation is sensible, which everyone is obligated to prevent bad things from happening even though sacrifices of equivalent or in more value are in expense. Singer’s position and his argument suggest that people are obligated to give, care, or help others who are in need. As stated in his second premise, “If we can prevent very bad things from happening, without sacrificing something of comparable moral value, then we are morally required to do it”, dictates that we as humans, are compelled to help others no matter the self-sacrifice and moral value that is in the current state. One of the cases that motivates Singer’s second premise is the example of the “Shallow Pond”, in which the person with the nice and expensive shoes is morally obligated to save a child’s life from drowning while sacrificing his expensive new shoes. According to Singer, “progress sometimes requires drastic revisions”, that we should see ourselves in the same moral value just like everyone else. An example given to counteract his argument was about slavery. Slavery has occurred a long time ago, and today people have learned that slavery is morally wrong, that no matter the color of our skin, or any physical appearance, people are equal. People will always show ignorance to the things that they are yet to fully understand. However, as times go by people will realize and be aware of the moral right things, that in the previous example of the “Shallow Pond” and “The envelope”, personal satisfaction and pleasure will always be sacrificed in order to do the right thing and my own goals, and interests would need to be abandoned.
