One of the five largest species of snakes in the world is now finding a home in the Florida Everglades. The Burmese python has a dark colored eye-catching patterned skin and is known for its calm and relaxed temperament. Because of the attractiveness of their skin pattern and docile nature, it is one of the large snakes of choice among reptile owners. Unfortunately, these snakes can reach huge lengths and weigh upwards of 200lbs making them difficult to keep. As carnivores, Burmese pythons kept as pets need a diet of small rodents or rabbits. This can get expensive and unsanitary. These non-venomous snakes are tricky to care for and often illegally released into the wild. This dumping, importation for the exotic pet trade, and escaped snakes from Hurricane Andrew is resulting in an established wild population of Burmese pythons in South Florida.

First and foremost, they live in the wild part of Tasmania, in Australia. Tasmanian devils during the day scour the land to find shelter, anywhere they can. Primarily, in caves, or bushes, hollow logs, and sometimes old wombat burrows. They lived on the mainland here of Australia, although their fossils suggest that they died out of the mainland in the 1600’s, before the Egyptians had settled. These animals are mainly black, but some have a minuscule amount of white markings, usually around the tail, and on the chest. Their oversized neck, jaws, and head, is what help them hunt. During the night, sometimes people can hear an eerie growl. What happens when a group of devils feed together at only one carcass? People can hear harsh screeching, and spine chilling screams. The Argentinosaurus, translated to the Argentine lizard, was believed to be 130 feet long and weighed a whopping 110 tons. It had a 35 to 45 foot long neck with a head size of about 4 to 5 basketballs. The Argentinosaurus was discovered in 1993 by Guillermo Heredia. It was unearthed in present-day Argentina, and is also named after this South American country. Scientists have not yet found the complete skeleton of the Argentinosaurus. Paleontologists found 4 foot long vertebrae and 5 foot long tibiae belonging to the Argentinosaurus.
Some lizards have the ability to change color. For example, Anoles, and Chameleons can change color. Anoles change color by their moods, surrounding, and to camouflage themselves from predators. Chameleons change color by their surroundings and also to camouflage themselves from predators. Some lizards can also lose their tails and grow back a new one. The reason for that is because they don’t have a vertebrae in their tails. All Squamata reptiles have toes with claws to climb up trees and grasp food so the food won’t get away.
The story Jurassic Park, by Michael Crichton, starts off with Mike Bowman taking a vacation with his family on the coast of Costa Rica. As they cruise on their Land Rover, Tina, Bowman’s daughter, runs off after spotting three-toed bird tracks. Tina then encounters a big lizard that makes chirping sounds, and is attacked by it. She is later sent to the hospital, where Dr. Gutierrez is intrigued to find out about the lizard that bit her left arm. Gutierrez goes back to the beach where Tina was attacked, and finds the carcass of a brown-striped lizard. The carcass is sent to the Tropical Diseases Laboratory of Columbia University Medical Center, where it is examined and analyzed. Despite the efforts made, no one is able to identify the lizard’s species, so the carcass is later sent to the Museum of Natural History for further analysis.

Atelerix albiventris, also commonly known as the four-toed hedgehog, is a fascinating organism with a plethora of intriguing characteristics. The hierarchical classification of this organism is as follows: Kingdom Animalia, phylum Chordata, class Mammalia, order Insectivora, family Erinaceidae, genus Atelerix, and species albiventris. In the genus Atelerix, there are four other species. The members of this genus include the four-toed hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris), the Somali Hedgehog (Atelerix sclateri), the Southern African Hedgehog (Atelerix frontalis), and the North African hedgehog (Atelerix algirus) (Santana 2010).The two distinctive features of the class Mammalia are the presence of hair and mammary glands. The function of hair is to serve as an insulator while the mammary glands enable females to produce nutritious, calorie-rich milk and nurse their young. Members of the order Insectivora are insect-eating mammals that have a long snout and either covered in fur or spines. Insectivores are seen as primitive mammals because they lack certain advanced characteristics seen in complex mammals, such as the primates. Instead of a ridged brain they have a smooth brain and instead of two separate openings for the genitals and anus, they have a cloaca, which serves as the opening for both the urinary and reproductive tracts. Furthermore, three commonly known mammals in this order Insectivora are the hedgehog, mole, and the. The genus Atelerix contains the African hedgehogs, which are distinguishable spines covering their bodies, a white fur belly, and typically are between six to eight inches in length (Vaughan 1972)
