You get invited to this club on Friday night. You meet a guy there and his voice is euphonious. He is melting your heart. You get completely wasted and black out. The next morning you wake up inside of a bathtub, covered in ice, with an IV stuck in your arm. You cannot move and you are numb from the waist down. You notice a bandage on your abdomen and you find a lesion underneath it. There is a note on the wall and it says “seek immediate medical care”. What is happening? You are a victim of an organ trafficking scandal. What exactly is organ trafficking? Organ Trafficking occurs when organs are removed from the body. It could be forcefully, without the “donor’s” consent, or even without them knowing. Men, women, and children may be kidnapped, killed and even sold for their organs. In 2016, a six-year-old boy was abducted right from his home. Aujani Davis, journalist from Washington State University, says “right before the little boy was drugged, the last words he heard from his abductor were “Don’t cry and i won’t gouge your eyes out.” When he was returned home, both of his eyes and one of his kidneys were missing. Infectious rumors of child kidnapping continues to be reported in areas of Guatemala. Pitlane Magazine says “armed men forcefully stealing young children and having their organs harvested and sold on the black market” (PM). In November of 2010 in South Africa, a man pleaded guilty to one hundred and two counts of organ trafficking. He was allowing his employees and facilities to be used to conduct illegal kidney transplants (Allian). Again, in order for an organ transplant to be legal and successful, the patient has to consent and the donor has to be blood related, which not a lot of organ trafficking victims
