“Designing” Our Children

Pumpkins and designing babies seem like they are completely different but, they have more in common than you think. A pumpkin looks healthier and lives longer when it is untouched. But as soon as you carve the pumpkin it will start to die. Carving this pumpkin makes it sick and once you crave it you can never go back. The same is true for engineering children, once you change them you can never go back. And we have never tried it before so we don’t know if the baby will react the way the pumpkin did by dying or not living as long. Designing our children is not a responsible thing to do because it cost a lot of money, it takes the natural beauty of pregnancy away, and it has too many negative health …show more content…

Although creating our children is severely years away, there are some things today that can help determine the characteristic of the child including the sex and the types of genes it has. The method that is being discovered now is In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). This is where they create the embryo out of only non-disease bearing genes. This test alone can cost $3000. $3000. Not including all the other doctor visit bills and things you have to buy. Some people who are expecting for the first time buy bigger apartments or a house so they have loan’s to pay for a new home. Such as, the technology that is used now is only experimental. It’s also unknown how genetically modified babies will affect the gene pool. Because most people will want good looking and smart children this will cause a lack of diversity. Another reason is “genes have more than one use “, so altering a gene can affect how it works. The “genetic modification puts genes at random places in the genome and can disrupt the function of another gene that is needed for survival” and can become fatal. We also do not know how this will affect the mother emotionally and physically. What if a person wanted their child to be skilled in killing people with their hands how would we stop that? There are so many unknowns with designing children why would you want to do
