Dear Mr. Lee, Malia, and Captain Raj Vaswani, I'm not sure who to address but I thought the Mayor of our City, our District Supervisor and the Captain of my neighborhood's police station was a good start. I am a 25+ year resident of Potrero Hill; where my husband and I raised our 2 boys. I'm sure you all love SF as I do and each of you do what you think best for our City. We all realize City issues are complex. What I'm writing about is that since last year, there has been an exponential increase of homeless encampments at the base of Potrero Hill. Last year there were a few near Alameda and San Bruno and on Division under the freeway but now the numbers are growing daily. It seems like word is spreading that Potrero Hill is the …show more content…
Starting to look like permanent housing to me. I've spent the last 20 years driving through the tenderloin each day to get to other parts of the city, so I'm not impervious to city living but somehow as the tenderloin is getting cleaned up, the base of Potrero Hill is looking like a 3rd world country. An odd juxtaposition to the trendy luxury condos and apartments being built. Roche Bobois the Jewelry Mart and Zynga, surrounded by homeless encampments. Certainly something is not right with this picture. Do you need a photo or have you been to Potrero Hill lately? I happen to live on De Haro and 20th and drive through the newest encampment territories each day. I wonder of course why they need to be there, I wonder if there are enough resources for them and if not - why not in the richest city in the world. Ultimately I wonder why we have a 3rd world living situation at the bottom of Potrero Hill. I would like to know: Is this what the City of SF is calling acceptable? What if anything is being done about the homeless situation - for their sake? Why are the homeless encampments and parking spots growing to such an extreme and rapid rate at the bottom of Potrero
How long will it take America’s streets to be clean? “In January 2014, there were 578,424 people experiencing homelessness on any given night in the United States” (Snapshot of Homelessness, n.d.). The number of homeless found on the streets continues to increase and more and more are left without food and shelter. They are left to survive off whatever resources they can find, and most nights it is nothing. This epidemic is beginning to grow out of proportion and action must be made to help change the brokenness found on the streets. Covina is one of many cities that has a numerous amount of homeless. The Calvary Chapel Cornerstone Church should implement a program that reaches out to help the homeless find jobs within the community due to
Following the dot-com boom of the 1990s, the political and economical landscape of San Francisco greatly changed (Bourgois and Schonberg). At this time, Mayor Brown of San Francisco enacted neoliberal policies and reinstated law enforcement campaigns that directly targeted the homeless (Bourgois and Schonberg 221-222). The campaigns caused the Edgewater homeless to lose their few possessions, regular encampments, clean needles, and contact with the Department of Public Health’s mobile health van (Bourgois and Schonberg 222). Many addicts blamed themselves for the situation they were in, but the culture they were surrounded by had just as large of a role in prolonging their addiction and health problems. The previously mentioned governmental policies and drug use of the homeless caused a “syndemic” in their lives. A syndemic is “a cluster of [health] problems that work together, reinforcing and often exacerbating each other synergistically” (Sobo 193). Poor sanitation, use of dirty needles, and reduced access to healthcare created a complex system of health ...
E: Mary, Queen of Scots, has been found guilty of plotting to usurp Her Majesty the Queen and has been sentenced to death. … I suppose it was only a matter of time. In all the nineteen years she’s been imprisoned, she never once relented on the opinion that she should be Queen. I had hoped she wouldn’t have stooped as low as to actually attempt to overthrow me though. What did she think would happen were she to ascend the throne anyhow? That the public would welcome her with open arms? They have not forgotten the bloody persecution she wielded against them. The Catholic Church may prefer her as ruler, but my Church would not stand for her injustice. … Even though she desires to see me disposed, I do not wish her dead. Despite our differences
There are an estimated 2,981 homeless people in San Antonio each day. Out of these, 1,243 were unsheltered and a staggering 31% of those are people with families. In addition, the average age of a homeless child in San Antonio is 6 years old. An overall picture shows that homelessness has dropped nearly four percent from 2012 to 2013. Further, an average of 610,042 people are homeless across the United States on any given night. “Of that number, 36 percent – 222,197 people – were in families, representing a drop of 7 percent for that group” (Chappell, 2013, p. #). More than a third of these people were not found in shelters, abandoned buildings, cars, or under bridges. Although, there has been a small decline in homelessness, it’s still necessary to drastically change these statistics by solving the causes of homelessness. Sleeping in vacant buildings and under bridges is unacceptable. These statistics are very alarming and a solution needs to be found.
Here in Tahoe, we are lucky enough to experience a great quality of life, and only a few have to face the horrible life of poverty and homelessness. However, nationwide, even right outside the basin, homelessness is a growing epidemic across the country. There are many ways one can become homeless; for the most part poverty. There are also different concentrations of homeless in different types of terrain, such as urban or suburban areas. Last, there is the ever- growing homeless population, and how much money it costs us for others to live in poverty. These are the questions we ask ourselves about homelessness, and the only way we can help is to know the facts about this lingering subject.
There have even been planter boxes place through sidewalks to prevent the homeless people from living in those areas. Comparison of mainland homeless to Hawaii
Camping is a fun activity for friends and family, that’s the time where they share their memories, and also make new ones. On the other hand, camping is when people are trying to stay off the rain, and wild animals form attacking them. That’s when camping is a time their lives depends on it. The article “Camping for their lives” by Scott Bransford talk about small and big cities that is over populated with homeless citizens. The article talks about what is happening in the scene, and what they have to face each and everyday order to survive.
As the article progresses, Kurhi continues to further his purpose of creating an informative, unbiased article by providing the problems that are present within the city’s homelessness, and how it may prevent officials from reaching out to those who are displaced. He notes that the “topography of the county.the numerous creek beds and little pockets of open space. [become] ersatz permanent shelters” (3). Kurhi’s analysis of the problem is evident in this excerpt; his use of imagery serves to create sympathy for the rough conditions that homeless people live in and also creates urgency for the problem of sheltering the homeless.
Gentrification is a highly important topic that has not only been occurring all over the United States, but especially closer than we may have thought. San Francisco is home to hundreds of thousands of people who have been a part of how amazing this city has become. San Francisco is one of the most visited places in the world with many of its famous landmarks, endless opportunities not only for daytime fun but also has an amazing nightlife that people cannot get enough of. People come for a great time and could not be done without the help of the people who have grown up to experience and love this city for what it truly is. The cost of living in such an important city has definitely had its affect of lower income San Francisco residents. For decades we have seen changes occurring in parts of San Francisco where minorities live. We have seen this in Chinatown, SOMA, Fillmore district, and especially the Mission district.

Countless throughout the streets of Jackson, MS there are homeless people asking for food, money, etc. and some people aid them and others walk away. However, does anyone ever see the other side of the equation? Driving down Gallatin St. one night I saw firsthand the “other side”. Because of this, the issue that my research will cover is homelessness. Homelessness is defined as a state in which individuals lack a fixed, regular, and adequate night-time residence. Poverty, lack of affordable housing, declining wages, lost jobs, the economy, foreclosure, decreased assistance programs, domestic violence, substance abuse, mental illness, single parenthood, etc. are some of the causes of homelessness in America. Some of the proposed solutions are: affordable housing and homeless prevention programs. However, there needs to be less energy focused on providing temporary housing for those who are homeless, and more focus on providing permanent, affordable housing. Homelessness is an issue that should concern all of us. With a decrease in this situation it would clear up the amount of people walking around on the streets and everyone would feel more comfortable traveling at night. If someone is homeless, it is a common belief that they are more inclined to criminal activity; therefore less homelessness could equal less crime. Homelessness is not discriminatory and can happen to anyone at any time.
The many causes of the homelessness issue has arisen from global conflict, unemployment increase, education tuition costs rising, and the increase of poverty. Homelessness is affecting all ages, ethnicities, and religions striking in both urban and rural communities. “Just last year, the national poverty rate rose to include 13.2% of the population. 1 in 7 people were at risk of suffering from hunger in the United States. In addition, 3.5 million people were forced to sleep in parks, under bridges, in shelters or cars.”
Homelessness is an issue in Louisburg and has some humane solutions. I wrote this to explain ways and to tell why I think the municipal government should take action to this issue. Man have had experience with the homeless and I took this chance to tell of my experience. The homeless have a huge impact on some concerned citizens and we have taken action so why can’t our local government help our

My next door neighbors are friendly and considerate people that my family trusts and shares a close relationship with. As a child I can still remember the countless times I knocked on my neighbors door to ask to borrow money or a bit of milk. Likewise, they’ve never hesitated to borrow some of our own belongings. As I grew older I got to explore the neighborhood more and meet new people. Now at age 16, I’ve seen the positives and negatives of my neighborhood city. The outdoors can be safe at times, but no matter where you go, whether it’s another state or country, there’s always going to be danger. The few times I’ve been out in the streets on my own I’ve never had trouble with anyone or been afraid of something bad happening to me. In more impoverished areas there is always more homeless roaming the streets, pushing their carts in the hot summer or cold winter. Scattered trash in sidewalks being blown towards the streets. Pedestrians walking on cracked sidewalks, passing through druggies, sots, or beggars. It is those parts of the neighborhood that make Van Nuys seem unpleasant
