Dear SUNY New Paltz Academic Standing Committee, This last year has been very difficult and although most of the issues were not school related, they had a major impact on my classes. At the beginning of the year, my Mom left her abusive husband. He was a very controlling person, who if anyone did something he did not like, he would yell and insult the person for hours. While the man was never physically abusive, emotional and verbal abuse can be just as damaging. He was very good at making people, particularly his wife and children, feel like they were worthless. About a quarter of the way through packing he came, claiming he felt sick and could not work. When he saw what we were doing, he became extremely angry, yelling at my mom, threatening to through us down a flight of stairs, off the deck, which was nine feet off the ground. During our stay there we often did not have water and when the colder weather came in we often went without heat, because the heater was broken and the landlord refused to come in and fix it. The yard in front of the apartment was full of garbage, cars and car parts belonging to the landlord. Overall it was not a very safe place to live. The weekend before finals our landlord kicked us out saying because we did not pick up the garbage, the insurance on the building had been revoked. Our landlord never asked us to pick up the garbage, in fact, when we moved in he told us he would be removing it. I was not able to email my teachers because I no longer had internet and I had run out of minutes on my phone.
Last semester was extremely stressful and busy. I will be able to do well during Spring semester as things have finally been calming down since after Christmas. A friend of ours had a house they had been renting that was recently vacated and they are willing to let us rent from them at an affordable price. My boyfriend, who is a mechanic, is helping me find a reliable but affordable vehicle so that I no longer have to take the bus
