Zoos have been used for a long time as a way for humans to view wildlife from a close distance. In earlier centuries zoos were used as a way to display one’s power and wealth. Transitioning from showcasing power to observing animals for scientific reasons, zoos have gone through changes that may not have justified their existence. Conservation and preservation would be the words used to describe the purpose of some zoos nowadays, but for most, it is the viewing pleasures of the public that keep them operating. Animals from all over the world are put in exhibits in the middle of San Diego, Chicago, and many other cities, just to be seen as an object that is stared and taunted at. In the United States, zoos implement contraceptives in a way to avoid killing animals, but that practice is often criticized because it disrupts the animal’s natural behavior (Rising). In contrast to the way the U.S. handles the overpopulation issue, European zoos do not have as much care for the life of an individual animal and slaughter them. Some even go as far as to feed the carcass’ to the lions and tigers (Rising). The total number of animals slaughtered has not been released, but it can be estimated that about a hundred are killed each year. To defend the murder of these animals, may zoo managers claim “their job is to preserve species, not individual animals”. Generally, animals are killed if the quality of life they are living puts them through a lot of suffering and pain, usually due to injuries, illness, or old age (Rising). Zoos often do not mention the euthanization of healthy and thriving animals, as they do realize it would turn even more people away from visiting and supporting zoos. There are not many options for placing surplus animals, as they are unable to relocate them back into the wild, most of the time. Zoos are also wary of selling the animals into programs other than sanctuaries and other zoos, most go with the easiest option of putting the animals down. Introducing this idea of euthanizing the animals to the public will put a heavy burden on the zoo, “Hardly anyone opposes humane, painless death for injured, terminally ill or dying animals. But euthanizing healthy animals, which are surplus, is another matter” (Graham). Getting rid of the “unwanted” or “genetically inferior” animals in zoos is a commonly practiced technique to avoid selling to profit-oriented dealers (Graham).
