The diploma, a pristine ivory paper with your name written on it, that’ s rolled up with a ribbon tied perfectly, a piece of paper everyone thrives to achieve. Everyone is expected to own this paper and those who do not is classified as a “failure.” Society’s expected “success” requires a college degree; however college isn’t the best option for everyone because many profession doesn’t require it and everyone has a different definition of “success.” No one should be forced to go into this cookie cutter curriculum for success. People today view success as someone with ample amount of money that’s “living the life.” Different people have different views of succeeding. Does having a lot of money make a person successful? It shouldn’t. Thomas There are many jobs that doesn’t need a college degree, for example artistic jobs. For instance, to become a geisha the person would go straight from middle school, skipping high school, because to learn all the values of being a geisha is better to be taught at a younger age. Geishas are Japanese female entertainers, that are trained in the arts of music and dancing to entertain about Japanese cultures. They believe starting younger makes it easier to mold the kids minds. In Japan, elementary and middle school are the only requirements and going to high school is not mandatory. Charles Murray contends in his article “Are Too Many People Going to College?,” that “More people should be getting the basics of a liberal education. But for most students, the place to provide those basics are elementary and middle school.” (235) Just like Murray states, in Japan the core knowledge is learned in the K-8 years. If the core knowledges are learned earlier, then college shouldn’t be a place to learn more core knowledge. Many of these people in these profession are able to work without a college degree. College should be for people that want to pursue into specific professions This perception that college degree is the golden ticket to a job of their dreams. Over the years, the underemployment rates have been going up to 16.8 percent. Underemployment is someone that is currently looking for a job or working part-time because they can’t find a full time job that uses their college degree. President of Hart Research, Geoffrey Garin says, “higher education today is to prepare people “for jobs that do not exist.” (Ungar, 227) This quote portrays what is happening in this society perfectly. College degree doesn’t always land you in a job because I believe everyone has this ticket, known as a college diploma, that it isn’t something special anymore. I heard from a person in my class that even if the resume is top-notch with an astounding college listed the person would not get the job because they are too over-qualified. If my classmate is right that even graduating from a great college would not land you a job, then we need to reassess popular assumption that college is a guarantee into a job that requires their
