Have you ever wonder why your dog act or looks the way he does? Have you ever dared to delve into the very fibers of what makes up your pet? I will explain the mysteries of genetics and help you understand why a mixed breed dog is overall better to adopt than a purebred. Science strongly backs-up the fact that mixed-bred dogs are better to adopt than purebreds because of their health, lineage, and quantity. I have often wondered what makes up my dog’s genes. The definition of heredity, as Merriam Webster Dictionary puts it is “is the transmission of such qualities from ancestor to descendant through the genes.” Genetics or genes are the puzzle pieces that build life. They are bits and pieces of your mother and father’s genes as well as some new genes. These genes are what shape your looks, personality, and even health. If both of your parents have bright blue eyes, you are most likely to have blue eyes too. If one of your parents has brown hair and blue eyes, and the other has blond hair and green eyes, you could have a variety. You could have your mom’s hair but your dad’s bright eyes and vice versa or you could have your mom’s eyes and hair but your dad’s nose shape. In conclusion, for looks, even in just facial looks, there are many different variations of both your mom and dad’s genes. Genetics also shapes your personality. While your mom may be an introvert and your dad an extrovert just like looks, there are many combinations of personality. There are exceptions to both of these gene inheritances. Although it is highly rare, you could have opposite looks and personality from both your parents. This also goes for health. If one of your parents has certain allergies, you may have some of the very same allergies as well as different allergies. How were they discovered? Well, in the book ‘Genetics Breaking the Code of DNA’ on pages 5-20 tells us who and how genes were first discovered. Gregor Mendel was a peaceful monk living in Austria in the early 1800s. Gregor loved his pea plants but he noticed that some of them of them were tall others were short. Some of them were different colors, different pod shape, and many other details. Therefore, he started doing experiments on his plants. He would separate certain plants together, covering them so that other genes were not able to reach his isolated plants. In this way, with patience and many experiments, Gregor Mendel discovered that different combinations or families created a plant with many of the same genes.
