6th Hour Language Arts Should Kids Get a Summer Break?
29 March 2017
Is getting rid of our traditional long summer vacation a good idea? I don’t think it is for many reasons such as it’s hard to set up games and family time, it’s good to have a long break from the social and academic pressure, and it has been an American tradition for about 120 years. That is why I think we should still have a long summer break. It doesn’t affect kids as much as other people think.
The first reason why kids should have a summer break is because it is hard to set up games and family time. According to “The Disadvantages of Extending the School Year,” planning vacations can be a problem, especially if the children are on different tracks. In addition, if schools on an all year calendar compete in sports with a traditional school calendar it can be difficult to set up events (“The Disadvantages of Extending the School Year”). As a student, summer vacations are a time

to spend with family and to do sports. It would be hard to set up a good family vacation if there was no summer break. According to another article by Ken McCleary, there is pressure on who goes on a family vacation, when, where and the length when attending to a year round school. Another problem for planning vacations could be sports(McCleary). That’s why kids need summer time off for family time and sports. Another reason there should be a long summer vacation is because it has been an American tradition for about twenty years.
According to Daniel Luzer, kids used to get the summer off in the early days because it was the primary growing season. Summer break didn’t exist until the 20th century(Luzer). Many students think that it is a good idea to continue the tradition because it has been like this for a long time. Even though kids don’t work with crops now it still gets really hot outside. Even though we have air conditioning classrooms still get hot at times. Another article by Lucas Reily states, during the summer class rooms were half empty and school wasn’t mandatory years ago. Lucas Reily states, “To top it off, air conditioning was decades away, and city schools during summertime were miserable, half-empty ovens.” Eventually 60 days got cut from the school year (Reily). This is why summer break has been an American tradition for about twenty years and it’s a good idea to continue
it. In addition to having a summer break for sports/family time and to continue the American tradition, it is good to have a long break from academic and social pressure. According to Helena Van Brande, summer break is a few months for kids to take a break from school and homework. It is also a time to spend quality time with friends and family. Brande also says, a vacation is important for both physical and mental health. Stress can be caused from lack of vacation or rest (Brande). School is stressful and it is nice to take a break and have family time. It is also nice to have freedom. If kids went to school during the summer, they would be even more stressed out then they already are. According to another article by Lucas Reily, the brain could get strained if it is over used. Additionally, students have a chance of straining their brains if they go to school year round (Reily). School does stress out a lot of students including myself. It is nice to have a long break from academic and social pressure. On the other hand, some people would say kids forget what they have learned the previous school year. According to “Summer learning loss: Do kids miss out?”, long vacations cause “summer slump. Some kids forget learning skills, but some families encourage kids to learn during the summer. The article also states, a 2010 study shown poor kids that read over the summer gets better test scores. Learning during the summer helps kids found in a white paper by the Georgia Family Connection Partnership (“Summer learning loss: Do kids miss out?”). Basically, kids that don’t practice school work during the summer end up getting lower test scores the next school year because kids forget what they have learned. According to article by Jeff Smink, summer learning loss gets worse every year and it affects student’s success. Smink also says, no matter how much was made during the year children will come back even more behind (Smink). Yes, it has been proven that students forget what they have learned in school during the summer, but there are ways to prevent that from happening like reading. In conclusion, summer break affects setting up games and family time, it’s good to have a long break from the social and academic pressure, and it has been an American tradition for about 120 years. I can’t imagine having a summer without freedom. I think that we should keep our traditional long summer vacation. Another significant reason is summer vacation needs to be longer. The primary reason for this is children need time to wind down and relax before they have to go back to school. For instance, during the summer children relax and prepare for school, if they...
In the United States, most schools still use a ten-month calendar that was developed when our country’s students needed school off to help with harvesting (Palmer). Trimble Local Schools Superintendent Kim Jones says, “year-round schooling is the notion of getting away from the old agrarian calendar...which was formed up around the planting season. Students were out of school from April until harvest to work in the fields,” (qtd. in Hapka). Under the agrarian system, most United States students are in school for nine to ten months, and get a two- to three- month summer vacation. However, the United States is no longer an agricultural-based society, and students have no need to take a three-month-long, unnecessary, not to mention disruptive break during the summer months; instead, the United States should switch the school systems to a year-round calendar.
...eved that the year-round calendar will provide the frequent breaks needed to keep students refreshed and motivated which in turn might result in a higher attendance and graduation rates. In the article "Is Summer Vacation Bad for You?" it is stated that “Experts say this type of calendar has clear benefits. With less time out of the classroom over the summer, most students don’t need as much review when they return. Plus, the opportunity to relax and recharge throughout the year prevents students – and teachers – from becoming exhausted. The bottom line: less stress and more learning.” Other’s disagree completely and believe that the frequent breaks cause unnecessary interruptions causing kids and families to become stressed and create issues when finding childcare. The entire idea of a new calendar year in school would only create more problems and hurt the economy
For years, parents and educators have debated the advantages and disadvantages of the traditional school calendar, which has long summer vacations for all students. The longer you are away from school, the more you lose what you learned in the previous year. Studies have shown that children who know English as a second language benefit the most from year-round education because during the long summer break, they may not hear English for several months. Long summer breaks is a problem for traditional schools and the solution is to substitute traditional schools for year-round schools.
Based on the article on The National Sleep Foundation, when it's time for school the average teen body still thinks it's the middle of the night.
Although, year round school wouldn’t be just a bad thing. For example, shorter summer breaks may decrease the amount of learning students lose. It can also mean that students are less likely to have summer learning loss. Also, students test scores lower after summer break. Therefore, some people get free or reduced meals but in the summer they wouldn’t get that. Shorter breaks would cause a hard time to find childcare and to pay childcare.
Would you consider going to a school where you learn year-round? Maybe this would be your ideal school, but, when would you get to have some time to go to summer camp, or get a summer job, or play a sport with games during the day? Schools with the traditional schedule may actually be a better choice, and not just because kids love summer break. Schools should have a traditional school year schedule instead of a year round schedule because there isn’t a significant difference between the students’ performance, and year round schedules make planning family vacations hard, make the teachers’ job more difficult, and are more expensive. Also, having a summer break allows kids to participate in activities that they would not be able to do on a year round schedule due to the shorter breaks.
Ideally, extending the school schedule into the summer equals more learning. Because students are not dedicated to their studies, often they do not retain the information they learned over the school year during summer vacation. According to the article “Will Longer School Year Help or Hurt US Students” Smyth notes that, “Proponents argue that too much knowledge is lost while American kids wile away the summer months apart from their lessons” (Smyth). Smyth argues that students clearly do not retain their lessons over the period of their summer break. However, opponents of the extension of the school schedule say, “summer breaks are needed to provide an academic respite for students’ overwrought minds, and to provide time with family and the flexibility to travel and study favorite subjects in more depth” (Smyth). Smyth’s observation not only protests taking summer away from families but also describes summer as a time needed to rest student’s minds.
The first reason for the traditional school year, the students should have a break time and they will spend time for the family traditional vacation. For summer breaks no longer term of YRE, the students will have three to four weeks shorter breaks then back to school. They attend school for more than 180 days calendars. For example, the students feel all the stress about heavily homework, test, studying, and quiz, but they need a break. In fact, summer vacation is a family tradition. YRE should give an opportunity for health and social education. In addition, the most United State school kids have lost their summer break in 2.5 million as their school districts options of YRE (“Year-Rou...
When did most of your best childhood memories occur? Probably during summer break! Now think if those memories had not happened to you because of school. Some schools now are going off of the traditional break schedule and are turning over to year round schooling. Students need time to rest, students need time for other activities and kids need time to spend with their family.. Schools should keep a traditional school calendar for many reasons.
Summertime is always the best of what might be. Each year, students wait for the last day of school to approach so one can start their eight week summer vacation. Schools shouldn't be year-round because long summer vacations allow students to enjoy free time, students will develop a summer routine, and students crave time off of school.
Also, a longer break would let them spend time with family members. Students would like a longer summer break to spend time with family members. Students could stay with other family members and cook out with them, play games with their family members, and talk with their family members as well.
There are thousands of things I love, but vacation is on the number one list. Many times over the years I have taken vacation time; It was only a while back, when I realized how amaz-ing, and the great value it gives the sole and body. There have been times when I felt not wanting to leave my work, whether it’s financial problems or among other things. Other times I thought my work was at a decisive juncture and it wouldn 't get accomplished without me. All profession-als or employees know that the money does not just make itself unless they are there to make sure everything is going according to their policy. I know I am not alone in making excuses not to take a vacation. When I asked a couple of my co-workers, they also agreed on not even taking a week off for the entire year, some even included holidays.
For most of the delinquent students got caught from their slightly misbehaving act for the first few times is not really a problem. What they don’t know about is that there is a program that can literarily handle even the most delinquent student must also bow down in surrender. The program is called “Weekend School”, also known for many students as “Hellish Torture School.” It was considered the most terrible and awful program and most students were afraid of. Because they believe that if they get into the weekend school, they have only one percent chance of survive. This programs it only available to most of the South East Asia countries middle school and high school. The purpose is to deal with delinquent students who get caught for their
When Americans think of the weekend, it's a mini vacation where they would have at least 2 days off from there busy life. They try to do as many things possible to getaway and enjoy there down time. There have been speculations where Americans should adapt to a 4 day weekend. It's extremely unnecessary to have that much days off when that gets taken off on your vacation days. A 4 day weekend allows you to have more time for yourself, more family time, and allows you to get the thing you've been dying to do.
