Through the many years, there has always been the fight that was constantly uprising around the world’s fishing borders between environmentalists and successful fish farmers. The one question that is constantly pondered upon is the golden question that defines what our seas could be and would be: Should overfishing be a right thing? What is overfishing? Overfishing is when fisheries continue to quickly capture fish with fifty meter nets quicker than the fish that they catch can reproduce, decreasing the ocean’s biodiversity and destroying the sea’s ecosystem. According to Save the Fish, Save the World Foundation, they plan to “eliminate all forms of overfishing encompassing all species currently being overfished, while also continually to educate the youth in realizing the negatives of this practice to prevent history from repeating itself,” (SFSW, 1). The main action required to complete the plan is cooperation and support. In order to function correctly the most powerful and influential countries will have to sign and agree on the creation of the new organization so that it will have the power to persuade. Money and resources will also be required to carry out plans. This method will only allow the fishing to be caught where the ish is allowed to be caught, while also keeping in mind of how much fish is actually being caught and those countries and fisheries that disagrees will be tremendously fined as a whole. Not only will the GFC be aware of where the fishing will happen, they will start fish farming using eco-friendly materials, keeping neither one or another fish more in demand than another. Thus, this method will work because it not only satisfies both parties, but it protects what needs to be protected and listens to what needs to be heard. With a coastline of over 202,000 km and over a fourth of the world’s freshwater resources, it is no wonder why Canada’s fishing industry is a huge part of its economy.1 Canada exports more than 75% of its fish to over 130 countries worldwide. Many of the 7 million people who reside on the coast depend on the ocean’s resources. In total, Canada’s entire fishing industry is worth around $5 billion a year, being one of the world’s most valuable. However, the coasts have not been treated with respect; overfishing, over consumption, and wasteful practices have deteriorated, not only the industry, but the ecosystems and fish populations. This is a huge global issue; the worldwide collapse of fisheries is projected for 2048.

First, governments should base their policies on scientific factors and should look for better economic incentives to stop fisheries from overfishing. Second, fisheries should use methods that are not so destructive to the fish population. Finally, consumers should avoid buying endangered seafood, even if they have to pay a little more. This notion is taught to most students in grade school and will carry on through the rest of their lives helping them make the most educated decisions they can. Logically, the greater the demand for something, the greater the profit will be. Boundaries have been set up saying which areas can be fished and which ones should be left alone. A number of smaller fisheries have gone out of business because of the limits imposed by the government. This leads to even less fish being harvested and brought to market. Therefore the amount and varieties of fish at markets are smaller and can cause shortages for wholesalers and restaurants. The Bluefin tuna, Thunnus Thynnus, is a top predator of the oceans, and the most valuable fish in the world. David Attenborough once called it a “superfish”. Despite its Darwinian advantages commercial fisheries have exploited Bluefin for decades, and the population has fallen to an estimated 36% of its already depleted 1970 level1. Originally, fish were caught by rod and reel, one by one. During the 1980s commercial fisheries developed techniques, such as the use of long lines, drift nets and purse seines to catch thousands of these animals at a time. These techniques have obliterated the population of Bluefin in just a few decades. They also wreak havoc on the ocean killing millions of sea turtles, sharks, whales, dolphins- pretty much every living creature they come across. In 2007 the WWF warned of the imminent collapse of the Mediterranean population, in their article “Bluefin Tuna in Crisis”. However, this has not reduced the efforts of fisheries to catch these majestic creatures; with more boats chasing fewer and fewer fish, the species is being driven towards extinction. This common is being overused and could tragically disappear in the near future unless drastic changes are made. Both fishermen and consumers, as well as everyone who is affiliated with nature to some degree will be affected. The responsibility to prevent this tragedy is everyone’s, but business should lead the way in making commercial Bluefin fishing sustainable. Since the age of two, a favorite hobby of mine passed down from my father is panfishing. Considered the bread and butter of Minnesota’s 10,000 lakes, panfish such as perch, bluegill, and crappie provide an excellent source of fun, and tasty food, for all ages of anglers. Not only do they consist of the easiest species to catch, panfish are considered one of the top class of fish to target during cold, frigid winter months when an ice layer forms and oxygen levels deplete. Panfish generally school up during the ice season, allowing anglers to find them with ease compared to the warmer summer months where they previously roamed open water in search of food. These once lethargic fish are now tricked into biting very easily, making it simple for fisherman of all ages to learn the tactics of fishing, and take home a delicious meal.
