Homelessness is a major problem facing the American people. We don’t really pay attention to it much because a lot of us have homes to live in. Middle-class people rarely stop to even look at a man on the street. Lower class people focus on them a little more than most people. It’s heartbreaking to watch someone beg for food and money. We let it happen; it scares us because we do not know how these people ended up this way. If we all understood them, we would have a better chance of saving their lives. Many homeless people end up on streets, become out of a job, and become fatally ill because they are not properly taken care of. The homeless usually end up on the streets and in the cold. One reason for this is because they do not have proper transportation. Everyone loves to own a car. It can get you quickly to your destination, whether it’s work, school, or your own home. Cars can be very expensive. More than often, homeless people are completely broke. They can’t afford to buy a car and keep it in good shape. They walk or take the bus to get around. A second reason people are jobless is because of criminal records and legal issues. A criminal record is a log of what and how many crimes a person has committed. “As of 2010, there are about 65 million Americans with criminal records.” (thenation.com) Businesses frown upon people with them because it makes the employer untrustworthy. A crime such as murder or rape is considered a high felony and can lessen a person’s chance of getting a job. Minor crimes can get a person hired, but it makes the employer watch the criminal carefully. (thomas-n-ruth.com) Little or no information is found on homeless criminals, but people concur that they cannot be trusted in working for a company. Drugs also plays in with legal issues. 38% of homeless people abuse alcohol and 26% use other drugs. Addiction in drugs can make a person physically and mentally ill.
