It is unbelievable how far the guns and other weapons industries have evolved over the years. Weapons started out as sticks and swords, fighting and killing had a purpose. Although there is no sane reason why one person should be allowed to kill another person, at least the death rates were much lower back then, than they are today. There were no ‘accidental’ deaths. There were well-thought out plans of killing people, made by people in their right minds against those who actually ‘deserved’ to die. Today, hearing about gun violence and other forms of public persecution has become the social norm. The government may appear as though they are doing whatever they can to prevent these horrible tragedies from occurring, but it is not enough. The government is focused more on the protection of the people after these acts of violence occur, than they are with taking these violent weapons of the public’s circulation. Although the second amendment grants US citizens the right to bear arms, I believe that people are taking this law too literally. Just because you have the right to possess a gun, that does not mean that you have the right to use it in any given circumstance. Even if you purchase a gun with the intention of only keeping it for life or death situations, guns can have actually been proven to escalate situations. Guns do not always give you the best protection, especially if they accidentally fall into the wrong hands. Guns are weapons of destruction, and nothing good can come out of a situation where a gun is involved. My idea behind establishing justice has defiantly been influenced by this project. Tragedy after tragedy, people find themselves mourning over the lives lost. And over and over again, they look back to see how they could have prevented it. People continue to argue and constantly debate what actions should be taken, and while doing so, more and more people lose their lives at the hands of gun violence. It’s clear to see that not much has been done to keep these weapons out of the wrongs hands: the shootings at Columbine High School and Virginia Tech have shown that. What would happen if there were to be another devastating shooting to occur? How would people react? Or would they just argue some more, while the wrong people can still easily get a hold of guns? The only way they can ever gain control of anything is by controlling the source of the problem, where people are able to freely purchase guns without restrictions. In order to reduce gun-related crime, unlicensed gun sellers should be required to run background checks on their customers.
The problem here arises that the gun itself cannot kill people, but the people who own it to use it as a weapon to kill another person. In addition, not all gun owners are criminals, so the confiscation of guns is not the optimal solution. In the essay “Just Take Away Their Guns”, James Q. Wilson said “There are some 200 million guns in private ownership, about one-third of them handguns. Only about 2 percent of the latter are employed to commit crimes” (Wilson). That means for every 100 people owning guns, only 2 people use it to perform criminal acts. Not all gun owners are criminals, the majority of people own guns for self-defense purpose. Therefore, the most important thing that the government needs to do is to closely manage the buying / selling guns rather than just take them away from people. If a person wants to buy a gun, he or she needs to have a background checked, provide an appropriate reason to buy it. On the other hand, the police should reward to anyone who discover the illegal use of firearms. For the past twelve years, police department data shows that officer made more than five million stop, but the number of illegal guns were found only 0.02 percent (Badger). Americans are faced with a huge problem of violence in the streets, these streets have become a place where old people are beaten for their social security checks, where little women are attacked and raped, where teen aged thugs shoot it out for some turf to sell their illegal drugs, and finally where small children everyday are caught in the way of bullets during drive by shootings. We try to ignore the criminals in our society and how they hurt it, but we shouldn’t. We should take actions to stop these acts of crazy people. And people try, but the hard work of some misguided individuals to stop the legal ownership of guns doesn’t really affect the problem at all, and takes the guns from the innocent citizens, who simply want means of self defense.

Guns have been the weapon of choice for some of the most brutal massacres on America soil. Since early history guns have been used mainly for militia and defense purposes. But, the development of new gun technology has made firearms more accessible and deadly. Although the second amendment gives the right to bear arms, guns should be controlled and monitored by the government because guns have contributed to a lot of killings in America and will increase crime rates.
Perhaps raising the age limit to purchase guns since a majority of the recent killers were in their late teens to about late 20’s. Another possible solution is to have those who own guns to always have an ID with them showing that he or she owns a gun. The biggest solution is to lower the amount of guns available in the US to citizens. In David Auerbach’s article “The Gun Debate Won’t be Won With Statistics”, Auerbach makes a comment that “States with more firearm laws tend to have fewer shooting fatalities.” By lowering the number of fire-arms available to the public, that means that less people will be able to have a gun in their home and that results in having a low homicide rate. When purchasing a gun, one feels more powerful knowing that he or she is in possession of a war weapon, if limiting that power one will not feel the need to shoot because of irrational decisions made for having power from owning a gun. Recognizing that states with more gun laws have had less fatalities it is time for the government to set those laws in action all across the United States. As extreme as the idea may sound to some, allowing the government to have control over stricter gun laws in the country is a much better solution than giving Americans even more freedom to allow more guns to civilians. There are twenty-seven states that prohibit gun possession by at least some of the juvenile offenders. We need gun store owners and companies that carry guns and weapons to do a background for psychotic and criminal behavior. Requiring an individual to obtain a license or permit for the purchase or possession of a firearm can facilitate responsible firearm use by ensuring that an applicant knows how to safely load, fire, and store a gun. That way they have some type of knowledge of relevant firearm laws. The issue of gun control in the United States has always been and will most likely remain a polarizing and controversial issue. It does not appear that at any time soon a resolution for the needless gun violence that occurs in the US will come to an end, with certain groups such as the NRA advocating no gun control at all, putting these weapons on pedestals, as the ultimate forms of freedom, liberty and expression, surpassing even the freedoms of speech, religion and petition. It will prove difficult to find a suitable middle ground to satisfy gun worshiping conservatives who are terrified of losing their guns, to big city liberals who see no need for people owning assault weapons because they are black and scary looking. However we can all agree on one thing, that expanded measures on handguns will reduce violence because they account for the majority of crimes while these so called assault weapons who are in the niche of statistics are put in the spotlight. Simply put gun control measures should be expanded to include more regulations for handguns as they account for the majority of gun crimes.
Why on Earth would we need more laws placing heavier restrictions on guns? Yes, there were 11,376 gun related deaths last year, but that is not the point. Guns don’t kill people; People kill people! If people don’t use guns, they’re just going to use a knife or maybe pencils. They could even use a book! There were only 256 mass shootings last year as well. The few mass shootings that occur won’t be stopped by increased gun regulation. These people will just get them illegally now. I mean, why make it more difficult for them to achieve their goal?
