As we all have noticed our summer days are getting warmer and warmer in the community we live. Just yesterday it was 100 ºF, equivalent to 38 ºC in the city of Newport news, and today is 91 ºF. The temperatures are constantly rising and so does the floods and many other natural disasters. These are the results of one common environmental problem, global warming. According to the Oxford dictionary, global warming is “A gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants.” Global warming can affect us in a local and global level. But for the purpose of this project we will be focusing on the …show more content…
There are millions of solutions to this immense problem that we can make possible. Some solutions include: using less heat and air conditioning, changing the regular light bulb in our homes to LED bulbs, buying energy-efficient products, using less hot water, saving electricity in every way possible, driving a fuel efficient car or biking, recycling the list can go on and on (West, 2015). Recycling is a great way to stop global warming. According to Pratt (2007), “recycling reduces greenhouse gas emissions from landfill, can reduce deforestation, save energy, and produce more energy-efficient products.” When you recycle, you can significantly decrease the production of industrial waste, therefore, decreasing the pollution. Recycling is also environmental friendly, recycling simply decreases the cutting of trees. Trees are our friends since they absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. Some limitations of recycling can be the fact that they might be not cost effective and recycled products can be not durable (“Recycling Pros and Cons List,” …show more content…
Biking can be good for you and for the world. Biking does not burn any fossil fuels, thus making it a great solution for global warming to replace our cars that do burn fossil fuel and emit carbon dioxide. A new study shows that riding bikes could save the world $24 trillion (Hurford, 2015). However, if you have a long distance to commute and biking does not work for you, fuel-efficient cars are eco-friendly and can be your solution in preventing global warming. There are many pros to using a fuel-efficient car. As nationwide, an insurance company, reports these cars are environmentally friendly since they use 30-60% less fuel than traditional automobiles, they have higher gas mileage, higher resale value, and easy maintenance. Since these cars are comparatively new, they have not been perfected yet. The limitations can range from limited space, long recharging time, and shorter driving range

Global warming is a scientific, political, and controversial topic. Some believe it is catastrophic, a slow moving killer hiding in the shadows. Others do not even think twice about it as they race by in a Hummer. Global warming is the gradual increase of temperature throughout different climates. It is caused by the greenhouse gas effect in which greenhouse gases, like methane and carbon dioxide, reflect sunlight back and forth. This reflected ultraviolet light bounces between the earth and the ozone layer and becomes trapped, resulting in a gradual rise of temperature. Over time, the slow rise of temperature causes new climates throughout the globe. The article “What Megablazes Tell Us About the Fiery Future of Climate Change” by Tim Dickinson
Even though cutting down on GHG sounds like it would work to stop or slow down global warming it would not have a huge impact. The CO2 that fills the air already has become to much for the trees to remove from the atmosphere. This doesn 't mean that we have to give up but instead try even harder to save the animals and Earth. Planting tree would provide more oxygen and those tree would also absorb the CO2 that 's flows through the air. Maybe another solution that would at least help would trying not to use a car as much as possible. Riding a bike once in awhile would
Climate change is considered a controversial topic. Although scientists have been studying the issue, there are many citizens that are still not fully educated about it. Therefore, there are people who support scientists in their results, and there are people who deny the scientists’ findings as propaganda or exaggerations. This is the same issue even in politics, where the two main parties, Democrats and Republicans, have opposing perspectives on climate change. One can really tell just by looking at their approach to the issue, especially their tone and diction. The republican candidates doubts climate change, and when the topic is brought up during an interview, the republicans flatly deny it with no further discussion. They do give some
There are a number of measures that have already been shown to have a positive effect on the environment and, if we redouble our efforts, could help to reverse the situation. I believe that, while it is true that there is a lot of negative news to this situation, there are many positive and effective actions that can be taken to restore a lot of what we have lost, or are in danger of losing. Consequently, a number of feasible measures can be implemented which will go a long way in slowing, stopping and, over time, reversing some of the harm caused. Initially, and perhaps the most important, is that we need to tackle the problem of carbons in our atmosphere. Consequently, if CO2 emissions are cut or drastically reduced, this will in turn help to reduce the level of greenhouse gases meaning that further global warming will diminish. (Climate Change Evidence and causes, 2013:33) This can be done in a number of ways. By continuing to develop new, greener technologies, cars and traffic in general will become cleaner, emitting fewer exhaust fumes and releasing less carbon into the air. This is already being done. At the recent UN climate-change conference in Doha, some 37 countries agreed to abide by legally-binding emission reduction measures. (Figureres C, 2012) We have seen the development of more efficient engines and hybrid models that use both petrol and electricity. Electric-only vehicles are also becoming more popular and new designs that are powered by solar energy are coming onto the market. Industry is also looking at ways to harness bio-mass and the possibility of hydrogen engines. These measures have already had a noticeable effect on the quality of life in a number of
...cle half of your household waste, you can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide annually. (Larry West, 2014) By just setting your thermostat at just 2 degrees lower in winter and 2 degrees higher in summer, you could save around 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide each year. By having every family in America switch out one regular light bulb with a CFL, it would eliminate 90 billion lbs. of greenhouse gases which is equivalent to taking 7.5 million cars off the road. For every gallon of gas you save while driving, you stop 20lbs of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere. Choosing to bike or walk will not only save your wallet and the environment, but will also benefit personal health and fitness. If each individual changes at least one aspect of their lives, together we can work to end climate change and these dangerous storm cells and stop the increase in climate change.
In addition to reducing the gases we emit to the atmosphere, we can also increase the amount of gases we take out of the atmosphere. Plants and trees absorb CO2 as they grow, "sequestering" carbon naturally. Increasing forestlands and making changes to the way we farm could increase the amount of carbon we're storing. The alarming world’s climate is very dangerous for mankind and ecological balance. Unless Global Warming is not controlled, no men, animals will be able to live, grow and thrive. So, we should try maintain the ecological balance to decrease the effects of Global Warming.
One way to “go green” is to use mass transit or ride a bicycle more often as cars are one of the main culprits in carbon dioxide emissions. By leaving the car in park and taking a bus or riding a bike just once a week can significantly cut down on emissions from American’s cars. Other ways to “go green” include planting trees and stopping deforestation. Trees absorb the carbon dioxide that causes global warming, but thousands of trees are harvested every day all across the country. According to “Solutions,” “Taken together, tropical deforestation and emissions from agriculture represent nearly 30% or the world’s heat-trapping emissions.” In this quote, the writer explains that nearly one-third of the carbon dioxide is from deforestation combined with agricultural emissions. Americans need to reverse this problem; Americans should cut down on deforestation and plant more trees! Another way to “go green” is to spread the word. One single American cannot reverse global warming. All Americans must take up the calling to stop global warming in America. Americans must spread the word to not only their fellow Americans, but also to the rest of the world. To lead in a global effort to stop global warming, Americans must “go green” to prevent the catastrophic consequences of global
Climate change. The two letter word so feared by scientists, so ignored by the average human being. What is it that makes scientists fear this phrase so much? For the concept of “climate change” has been seen throughout the history of the earths existence. For centuries, our climate has fluctuated through increasing and decreasing amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide and climatic cycles. So what is the big deal? The problem, and the reason why this concept instills fear directly into the core of scientists is the rate at which over the past 1,300 years atmospheric carbon dioxide levels have risen. This unnatural increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide, due to the immense amount of anthropogenic burning of oil and coal, affects the transfer
Many hazardous pollutants escape from the internal combustion of the engine. Conventional gas powered vehicles use irreplaceable fossil fuels to run. When burned, these fossil fuels create numerous toxins like carbon dioxide (Larminie 246). Carbon dioxide is considered the main greenhouse gas that creates the foundation for global warming (hybridcars.com, pollutants). This harmful pollutant may not have a serious effect on people at first, but it does have consequential effects on the environment that in turn put people in danger (Nutramed.com). The major consequence caused by global warming is the rise in average temperature. This results in a domino...
People can also reduce the use of fossil fuels by doing simple things for instance switching off lights and appliances when leaving the room. Walking or cycling instead of driving a car or use public transport for maybe longer journeys. Little things like this will make a big difference, making our planet a better place.
My parents grew up in small town in Mexico. There was a little river that went through part of the town when they were growing up. Every weekend or so they would go out and would go swimming with their families, it almost became a tradition to go swimming there until they noticed that the river 's water level was becoming smaller and smaller. Today there is no river anymore, instead it 's a road that travels through the town. Every time I visit my family in Mexico it would alway be nice and warm up until this year when I went in December. I remember waking up and getting ready to go to my aunt 's house in clothes for warm weather. As I open the door, the cold air punch me and I saw snowflakes falling down. It 's not supposed to snow in that
Even if the reason of climate change may be the natural cycles, we humans are the major determinant to it. The huge amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is causing the climate change and this amount is rising day by day, as a result of our actions. Greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide, generally absorb and emit the heat in the atmosphere to keep the Earth’s climate habitable. However, as we continue to burn fossil fuels, this habitable Earth’s temperature will blow up, and as a result, some species will die out due to various problems which are caused by climate change. According to EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), the most obvious consequence of climate change is the rising sea levels, which will cause some seashore habitats to become unavailable to live to its species.
Global warming has become on of the most controversial issues in the media today. While most of the Western world countries have generally accepted the premise that man's chemical emissions in the atmosphere can and are affected by the world’s climate patterns, in the United States, the issue has become so politicized with many republicans challenging the science behind the theory. Global warming is a greenhouse effect whereby gases are trapped on the earth’s surface causing it to heat up (Maslin 14). It is based on the worldwide temperature records that have been maintained by human beings through their activities since the 1880,s. In addition, global warming is not only caused by human activities only but also through climate changes in solar radiance. The problem is that, humans continue to contribute to the global warming phenomenon. All citizens should work in reducing human activities that cause global warming and also support the development of nuclear power. Scientists deem that, global warming is mainly caused by human activities which accelerate the natural process by creating greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Human activities have become a great contribution to the greenhouse effect and this means that climate changes are inevitable. They further argue that, if these activities continue and are not reduced, it will lead to more trapping of energy radiated from the earth and this will likely lead to extreme weather and global warming. Global warming should be at reduced levels or else, it will be catastrophic.
One of the most substantial problems in the world today is global warming. This gradual warming of the earth is in occurrence at an extremely slow rate but it is happening. Many scientists believe that as human’s work and release greenhouse gases into the earth’s atmosphere, it can become dangerous for the long lasting life of humans and our environment. “Unless we take immediate action, the impacts of global warming will continue to intensify, grow ever more costly and damaging, and increasingly affect the entire planet - including you, your community, and your family” (“Global Warming Impacts”). Everyone should be knowledgeable about global warming and the dangers that it brings to our planet. This essay will examine
